JIM S CORNER Sunday, April 22, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Easter It is always a wonderful and joyous time in the life of a parish when parish children receive their First Holy Communion. It is with joy that this Saturday, April 28th at the 4:00 pm Mass, nine young people will receive the sacrament for the first time. St. John Paul II addressed a letter to children where he said, There is no doubt that an unforgettable meeting with Jesus is First Holy Communion, a day to be remembered as one of life s most beautiful. Children receive this sacrament solemnly for the first time in First Holy Communion and are encouraged to receive it afterward as often as possible in order to remain in close friendship with Jesus. He goes on to say Every boy and every girl belonging to a Catholic family knows all about this custom: First Holy Communion is a great family celebration. On that day, together with the one who is making his or her First Holy Communion, the parents, brothers, sisters, relatives, godparents, grandparents as well as the instructors and teachers, generally receive the Eucharist. I think most of us can remember our First Holy Communion. Perhaps we still have the prayer-book or certificate or some memento that we received that day. There probably was a party with lots of food, pictures, cards and gifts. Our 2018 First Communicants are the following: Addison Aleski Nathan Drzemiecki Allison Greygor Luke Hill Trista Kasko Daniel Mendoza Dillon Stegman Cole Tunstall Mackenzie Woistman SANCTUARY CANDLES LIT THIS WEEK HSP Sanctuary: Dorothy Pawlak By: Leonard SNP Sanctuary: Joseph Andrisevic By: Rich & Jan SNP Grotto: Active Service Personnel By: Parishioners May their First Holy Communion experience bring them even closer to Jesus Christ and be a source of spiritual strength in their lives! God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season of Easter from the Lord's Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King's chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn't take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD The image of God as shepherd and his promise to lead his people in safety appears throughout the Bible. It is one of the most tender images of God that we can have as he assures us of his constant care and protection in our lives. This care applies not only to us individually as his children, with the shepherd carrying us in his arms, but also to us collectively as the Church, with God leading his flock in safety. This repeated promise to shepherd his people is our guarantee that God is in charge of his Church and that he leads us no matter the circumstances. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we may wonder where the Lord is leading us. While it is natural for us to resist change, it is also an opportunity for us to grow in trust of God, our shepherd and guide, that he may transform us and his Church. As we learn the decisions regarding Parish Groupings and Clergy Teams next week may we call upon our Good Shepherd to lead us and our parishes in the years ahead. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. MAY 4TH PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC The May 4, 2018, issue of the Pittsburgh Catholic will be distributed to the homes of registered parishioners. The issue will be centered on the implementation of On Mission for the Church Alive! The newspaper should arrive in homes by Friday, May 4th. If you do not receive a copy, please contact the newspaper s circulation department, and a copy will be mailed to you. The circulation department contact information: phone, , ext pzezza@pittsburghcatholic.org; fax: EUCHARISTIC DAYS You probably noticed in another page of today s bulletin, a listing of all Eucharistic Days in our diocese as we pray for a successful transition to our new parishes. Every Day from April 27 th thru Oct 14 th, Eucharistic Adoration will be held in a parish in our diocese. Holy Spirit s Eucharistic Day will be on Pentecost Sunday, May 20 th. At St. Nicholas Parish it will be on Sept 30 th which is the Feast of St. Jerome. Since the May 20 th date is more immediate, we are providing some of the details for that day. The day will begin with the 10 am Sunday Mass followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a Holy Hour. It will conclude with Benediction and be followed by a free parish dinner in the Lyceum. Remember we are being asked to pray for the progress toward the changes through On Mission which will take effect in October. Obviously the focus of prayer means your participation in the Mass and Adoration. The dinner is the opportunity for fellowship and celebration but it is not the focus. For instance, not attending any of the services but coming to the free dinner only would not be in the spirit for which this day is intended. You do not need to register for the Mass or adoration in the church; however, registration for the dinner is required. Please use the form at right for your dinner reservations and drop them in the collection basket or at the parish office. HSP EUCHARISTIC DAY DINNER Sunday, May 20, 2018 I will attend the free parish dinner (starts at 1:30 pm). Please reserve spaces. FAMILY NAME
