JIM S CORNER There are many ethnic customs for the celebration of Easter. One of the most popular is the blessing of the Easter food. On Holy Saturday, families bring decorated baskets of food, which will be eaten to mark the end of the penances of Lent and the celebration of the Resurrection. The origin of the custom probably dates back to countries in Central and Eastern Europe. More and more parishes in our country are observing this tradition. Our parish communities are made up of people whose ancestors are from Poland, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary just to name a few. Many folks want to honor their heritage and remember their ancestors by having their baskets blessed. More and more ethnic groups are being added to the list of groups who want to participate in this blessing rite rich in symbolism. We are providing two opportunities for blessing of Easter food on Holy Saturday: Noon at St. Nicholas and 1 pm at Holy Spirit. I thought that you might find it informative as to some of the foods that are brought for the blessing and the symbolic meaning of each: Butter, often in the shape of a lamb, to remind those celebrating of the goodness of life. A special bread which varies from each ethnic group which symbolizes Christ the bread of life. Either white or red horseradish as a reminder of the Passion of Christ. Egg either simply hardboiled or decorated, symbolizing the tomb and new life. Meats such as ham, bacon or kielbasa indicating generosity and God s favor. Salt as in salt of the earth. And yes, the occasional piece of Easter chocolate can also be found! Many families who observe this tradition generally do not partake of the blest food until after the Easter Vigil or for breakfast on Easter Morning. If you have never celebrated the tradition, why not give it a try? Maybe you will find a new tradition to celebrate as a family each Easter. God Bless Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

The spirit of God's anointing rushes upon him. In this way, he is similar to the man born blind from today's Gospel. David's family and the blind man's community did not expect the miraculous grace of God's love to work through them. Perhaps they, too, were "blinded" by the expectations and assumptions of those around them. Yet, after being touched by God, they both came to "see" the presence of God's will for them. Both became messengers of God's will. That same Spirit of God's anointing rushed upon us at our baptism; we were given a candle as a sign of our membership in the Body of Christ, the Light from Light. Our vocation, then, is to fulfill that enlightenment, that anointing, as Ephesians tells us, by living as "children of the light." Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WASHING OF THE FEET To help make the celebration of the Mass of the Lord s Supper more meaningful, we still need volunteers to have their feet washed. It is simple, painless, and a beautiful way to bring alive the servant nature of Jesus and of each of us as Christians. The liturgy is on Holy Thursday, April 13 th at 7:00 pm at Holy Spirit. There will be twelve ribbons on various pews in the center aisle. Volunteers should sit at the end of pew designated. You remove one shoe and sock, have Father rise and dry your foot, put your shoe and sock back on and that s it. Volunteers should call the parish office to register. Thank you!
