BAPTISM: Infant Baptism is held on the first and third Sundays of the month at 2 pm. Prior registration is necessary. A formation session for parents is also required. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance is offered on Saturdays at 11 am at HSP and on Saturdays following the 6 pm Mass at SNP. Other times are available by appointment. FIRST COMMUNION: First Holy Communion is usually celebrated in the Spring. Children candidates are expected to be enrolled in the parish CCD program. CONFIRMATION: Children preparing for confirmation are expected to be enrolled in the parish CCD program. Any adult (over 18) should contact the CCD Office for their formation preparation. MARRIAGE: Potential couples wishing to be married in our Catholic Church must contact the priest at least six months before the desired date. No date can be guaranteed until the couple has met with one of the parish priests. ANOINTING OF THE SICK: The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be administered by a priest at anytime as long as the priest is available. Two Communal Anointing of the Sick Masses are offered during the year in the fall and in the spring. RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is open to any adult interested in becoming a Roman Catholic Christian through a program of formation and prayer. JIM S CORNER We, here in Millvale, just experienced another natural disaster that has many suffering citizens, businesses and the like asking Why again? Why here? Our neighboring municipalities have also had their share of natural disasters. And this particular year, with all the almost daily landslides in our western PA area, we might be saying Is God telling us something? Well, I am not God nor are any of us, so we have to try to do the best we can to offer answers to our common questions. When it comes to man-made disasters, we can identify someone to blame. Sometimes humans become victims of human choices. Sometimes it stems from actions that were taken as well as inactions. We can t get into the mind of God to find the real answers. But we look into our own humanity and ask What does natural evil tells us about humanity. Natural disasters highlight man s inability to predict and control. We are small, weak and at the mercy of the elements. Natural disasters call for humility before God and reminds believers to find their security in God. Yet a natural disaster can showcase human resilience and perseverance. Humans rebuild in the very areas prone to floods. Some say that might be foolish but it certainly shows that we have the human capacity to create something livable out of rubble against great odds. Natural disasters bring out the best in compassion and community. As Christians, we have a special obligation to love our neighbor. We must be at the forefront of aid and relief efforts with unselfish abandon and generosity. It is interesting to note that there are usually two responses characterize any post-natural disaster: Those (and they were usually poor) who were thankful that they had their lives left, and those (and they were usually rich) who complained that all they left was their lives! The former will make spiritual progress; the latter will regress unless they probe the divine meaning in a natural disaster. God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim Holy Spirit, inspire us. We are extending invitations to the parishes in our grouping: All Saints, St. Bonaventure and St. Nicholas. The picnic will start at 1:00 pm and end around 6:00 pm. Please note that this year food will be served between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The Christian Mothers will provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, water, ice tea and lemonade. The Ushers will cook. Parishioners are requested to bring a food item (enough for 10 persons) and follow the chart by your last name to bring the following: A-F Desserts; G-P- Salads and Side Dishes; Q-Z Appetizers. Our friends from All Saints, St. Bonaventure and St. Nicholas are invited to just bring your-selves and enjoy this opportunity to get to know one another in an informal social setting. Working all day, getting home, eating dinner and making a 6:00 pm Mass appears to be a bit tight for some. So we have listened. On the Feast of the Assumption, the Vigil Mass on Tuesday, August 14 th will be at 7:00 pm at SNP and the evening Mass on Wednesday, August 15 th will be at 7:00 pm at HSP. The 8:00 am and Noon Masses will remain as is. We hope that this change will help and encourage more people to attend Mass on a holy day which right now is a sparse crowd at best! HSP CASH RAFFLE REMINDERS The Holy Spirit Cash Raffle will be held on Saturday, Sept 15 th, as part of Millvale Days at the Christian Mothers booth on Grant Avenue. Registered parishioners can find their envelope packet at the main entrance of the church they are in alphabetical order. If for some reason you are unable to find your packet, please call the office and we will make arrangements to get them to you. The raffle is open to everyone so if you are interested in purchasing some tickets, you can stop by the parish office during normal business hours. Tickets are not only in books of 12 but also loose so you can get as few or as many as you wish. Ticket stubs and payment can be returned in various ways. Put them in an envelope and mark Cash Raffle on the outside. They can be dropped into the collection basket, brought to the office during office hours or even when the office is closed can be dropped in the letter slot at the office front door. 5 Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas Parishes are participating in this effort to support the 100,000 Diapers in 100 Days Project of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh Those who wish to donate can drop-off diapers at the following times and locations: Before and after weekend Masses: Diapers can be dropped off in the main entrance of either of our two parish churches. During normal office hours Monday thru Friday: Diapers can be dropped off at the parish office at 608 Farragut St. We are proud to be able to participate in this program which benefits the Pregnancy and Parenting Program of Catholic Charities. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encouraging us, placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he draws us back into the fold. The Lord s work as shepherd of our hearts is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is always, actively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers, but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us and the Church through this time of change. 6 ON MISSION GROUPING 101 If you want to pay a visit... Mass Schedules Mass Schedule at All Saints (19 Wilson St, Etna, PA). Their Saturday evening Mass is 5 pm; Sunday 8:00 am and 10:00 am; weekdays Monday thru Saturday at 8:00 am. Mass Schedule at St. Bonaventure (2001 Mount Royal Blvd, Glenshaw, PA). Their Saturday evening Mass is 6:00 pm; Sunday Masses at 7:00 am; 8:45 am; 10:30 am and 12:15 pm. Weekdays Monday thru Thursday at 6:40 am and Friday and Saturday at 8:20 am. REVISITING LOW GLUTEN HOSTS Remember when in the grocery store there would be a little section for gluten free products. That increased to a whole aisle and now every aisle will have items that are labeled gluten free. Go to a restaurant and more and more gluten free entrees are being offered. Some restaurants even have a separate gluten free menu for their patrons. This indicates to me that more and more people are gluten intolerant and can only consume gluten-free products. Proportionately so, you would think that there must be more and more Catholics that would have that same gluten intolerance when it comes to receiving communion. We have those special made gluten-free hosts (these hosts contain less than 0.01% gluten). You might ask your doctor if these are suitable for your situation. It is easy and simple. Let the priest, deacon or sacristan know that you wish to receive the low-gluten host at a particular Mass. When it is time for communion, be sure to go up to the priest distributing Communion. Identify yourself and he will give you a pyx (container) with your special host in it. Take it back to your pew, consume it and after Mass return the pyx to the priest, deacon or altar sacristan. We received an from Eddie Figas, interim Borough Manager with the following comments: Thank you very much for the donation. Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas Parishes were incredibly generous. It is appreciated and be assured the funds will be used to aid victims of the flooding. We are still collecting donations. They can be brought to the parish office during normal office hours or dropped in the letter slot at the main door. Place your donation in an envelope and mark Millvale Flood Relief. The event will begin with praise and worship led by Jonah Soucy, followed by Mass with Fr. Mike Ackerman, and the walk itself. Youth will have the opportunity to learn more about practicing and living our works of mercy as well as show their support for the needy by carrying donations.
