What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very wellpreserved seventeenthcentury home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and de Catholicized them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed Old Church by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work hiding St. Nicholas Parish in the upper loors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there s no need for any of them to hide in the attic.

Two Roads Isn t it true that there are many things that we would like other people to change > do we ind this unusual? No, probably not. It s just one of the fact of life. Not everybody does things the way we would like them to. Some of those changes that we would like others to make are quite trivial. In the long run they really don t matter. But other changes are of the utmost importance. If one person is abusing alcohol or some other substance, then change is crucial. In fact it may be a lifesaving change that is being asked of a person. And why do people ask others to make lifesaving changes? Quite simply, because they love that other person, and it hurts them very much to see that other person slowly destroying their life, and all that is valuable in life. And so it is not at all unusual to hear Jesus asking us to change. After all, he loves us as no one else can. He wants the very best for us. It grieves him to see some of the things we do which end up bringing nothing but misery into our lives. Our sin, or selishness, our self centeredness, win nothing for us but unhappiness. When Jesus puts out the invitation to repent, he is calling down the road that ultimately leads to happiness. What is our task then? During this coming week perhaps we could seriously relect on our answer to Jesus call to follow him. If we discover that we are Moving off the path too often, it is time to ask forgiveness and help to get back in tune with our fundamental choice.
