Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.

2 July will be a busy month for our parish. Of course the Fourth of July is always a special time for all of us. We pray for our great country and ask God to mend our every flaw and help us to learn together for the welfare of all. Our parish Mass is at 9:00am in the Chapel...We mark our very first Men s Night Out at St. Lucy at 7:00pm our first step in men getting together for a relaxed social and helping us as brothers to take our place in parish life...our annul Parish Picnic is at Mariapoch Shrine on Saturday, July 21. Mass is at 5:00pm only, followed by a Picnic Supper, entertainment and games not to mention the Euclid Beach Rocket Car. We will cancel the regular Masses at St. Edward and St. Lucy that Saturday and join together for only one Mass at the Shrine. Make the Picnic an important event for you and your family...june 30 was the end of our fiscal year for the Diocese of Cleveland. Our Finance Committees and Karen Thrasher are busy preparing to present our annual financial report to the parish. July 1 begins a whole new fiscal year as we start all over again. The diocese mandates us to have a budget prepared for the new year as we look forward to upcoming needs. As you know, our Finance Councils met and deemed that we are not in a position at present to hire a full-time Youth Minister / DRE. With salary and all benefits, training schedule, etc. it would be beyond our reach. We are now looking at a Plan B. One thing the group thought important was to meet with all interested parents and determine the support we can expect from them and our youth for a program that elicits support and commitment from all in the parish. We will also be in touch with St. Helen to discuss where we go from here...we have received notice from our annual Mission Appeal for the parish. The Redemptorists from Perth Amboy, New Jersey will be here for Masses the weekend of August 11 & 12. Fr. Jacek Dembek will share with us the order s important missionary work in Russia. Each year our vision is opened a little more to the greater work we Catholics and our missionaries do around the world. We cannot go to these areas ourselves, but we can be involved with our prayers and support. See posters for details of what to bring! Little girl, I say to you, arise! Did you notice that the number twelve turned up twice in today s gospel? The little girl was twelve and the woman had been sick for twelve years. Whether it s a coincidence or not, it reminds us in a striking way of what Jesus meant to those he encountered. He was a source of life and hope. In the culture of the society in which Jesus lived, a girl of twelve was considered eligible for marriage and childbearing. Death at such an early age was seen tragic not only because the girl was so young, but because she would never have the chance to marry and have children, to bring new life into the world. It was their custom, when a child died too young to marry, to have a marriage service as part of the funeral rites. Later in the gospel, a woman suffered from a disease that also made it impossible for her to bear children. The Jewish people saw childbearing as an imitation of God s life-giving power and as fulfilling God s command to make the earth fruitful. So Jesus restores not only life, but hope. The hope Jesus brought came in the face of hopelessness and despair. The woman tried everything. The doctors reduced her to poverty. When she was cured Jesus praised her because she had refused to give up. Then Jesus moved on to the home of the synagogue official and came face-to-face with utter despair. They said the child had died and there was nothing more that could be done. Jesus tells them not to fear. He confronted loud lamentation and dirges. People were screaming and tearing their hair. It was not a Christian wake. There was grief and no expression of hope. Jesus takes her hand and raises her. Life is stronger than death and hope conquers despair.

4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. In 1908 legislation was passed and In God We Trust was mandatory on all coins. In 1955 In God We Trust became mandatory on all U. S. coins and paper currency. John Giel IT S A MATTER OF LIFE How is it possible? We try so hard. We do so much. We call upon on God. We believe. Why doesn t it work? Why in America does the serial murder of innocent preborn babies continue? Why do some interventions save some lives and others don't? In our frustration, the answers escape us. But we can be certain of this. There is no appropriate alternative to continue trying. We must never stop trying to end the scourge. We won't have to give an accounting for what others did, but we will have to give an accounting for what we did (or didn't do) to "love the least". Jesus promised us that. St. Bede in Mentor will host GriefShare, an eight-week griefsupport group, on Thursdays, July 12th to August 30th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. GriefShare is a Christian-based program whose goal is to offer guidance, support and encouragement to those who are dealing with the death of a loved one. Workbooks are $20; scholarships are available if you are unable to meet this cost.
