1 The Parish of St Teresa of the Child Jesus Rochford & St Pius X Hockley What s On The Legion of Mary: working and praying for the Kingdom of God in our Parish. Everyone is most welcome to the 5.30pm meeting in the Parish Centre - new members always welcome. Baby & Toddler Group meets in the Parish Centre after the 9.20 Mass on Wednesday Mornings : 10am to 12pm during term time. Everyone very welcome. Parish Priest: Fr Gerry Drummond MA 109 Ashingdon Road, Rochford, SS4 1RF / frgerry@talktalk.net 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time. In today's gospel the Pharisees again attempt to trap Jesus in the intricacies of the Law. Jesus' response turns the question from legalism to the true nature of marriage. He cites two passages from Genesis concerning human creation. The first, "God created the human person in his image; male and female he created them," establishes the union of man and woman in their likeness to God. The second, "This one, at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh... That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one flesh," presents woman as the suitable partner for man and the gift of God to him. The description of woman's creation from man's flesh explains the longing and the union of mutual love between man and woman. The prophets portray the love of God for his people as the love of a husband for his wife. In covenant fidelity God continues to care for Israel. Even when she betrays him to follow other gods, he remains faithful to her. He calls her back and renews his espousal to her. This bond of marriage also symbolizes the love of Christ for his Church. He loves her as his own body. She, on her part, prepares for him and awaits the day when he will return to take her as a bride into the wedding banquet of the kingdom. G.A.Ls. This Monday, 5th October at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Centre there will a quiz and social evening. Please note the 2nd November meeting has now been moved to the 9th November when Brian Curtois will give a talk on being a journalist for the BBC. More information nearer to time. Rochford Area Action Plan The Council are in the process of producing an Area Action Plan for Rochford town centre. The Council has produced a draft of the Area Action Plan for Rochford. They now want your views on these. Copies of the Rochford Area Action Plan discussion and consultation document ( Issues and Options ) can be viewed online at: as well as in Rochford library and Rochford Council Offices. Views can be submitted via the online consultation system at: If you wish to submit your views but are unable to do so online, please contact a member of the Planning Policy team on Comments must be received by 5pm on 30th November It is noteworthy that the Area Action Plan looks at no fewer than six different sites in Rochford, but makes no mention of the former BP Garage site opposite the Station, now boarded up, although it does suggest knocking down the next door sites of the A1 Car Sales Garage and Haynes Florists to Create heritage entrances and improved signage on the main routes into the town centre. Could it be that a Supermarket is involved? Baby and Toddler Group We are currently looking for volunteers to assist with this group. The group meets Wednesday mornings from 10am to
5 12pm during term time. Please contact Sandra Stilwell on if you are interested in offering your assistance. Altar Servers for Saturday Evening Mass. We now have 12 altar servers who are able to serve at the mass on a Sunday, and at most Saturday 5.30 mass there are no altar servers, therefore we would like the monthly altar servers list to include the 5.30 evening mass with a minimum of two servers, as I am aware that not all servers are able to attend the evening service. Please let Derek Maynard or Fr Gerry know if you would be available to serve at the Saturday evening mass along with the Sunday Mass as from October. We are also keen to expand our team of altar servers. If you think the Lord may be calling you to this privileged ministry, please speak to Fr Gerry or to Derek Maynard. The Collection for weekend of 20th September was Our Parish needs 1620 over the same period to run. Thank you all for your continued generosity. Swine Flu and receiving Communion Some people have expressed concern about the risk of catching swine flu from receiving the chalice. The current advice is that you are at no greater risk of catching swine flu from receiving the chalice than any other means of infection. May I remind you that the practice of intinction (dipping the Host into the chalice) is forbidden in thie Dioceses of England and Wales. The reason for this is that you are actually placing yourself and others at greater risk of catching swine flu and other infections because of the risk of dipping fingers in the precious blood. The question of receiving the chalice is under daily review during the current epidemic and if it becomes appropriate the chalice will be withdrawn completely, along with Holy Water Stoups and sharing the Peace. Please do not dip your Host in the chalice. Music Lessons Our resident trumpet player, Graham Hunter, is now available to teach music lessons for all ages. Graham is a multi instrumentalist and can teach among many others: brass instruments, saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, piano and drum kit. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning a musical instrument or brushing up, please contact Graham on From an anonymous Parish Magazine: At the evening service tonight the topic will be "What is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice.
