PARISH NEWSLETTER St Teresa's Catholic Church The Presbytery, Brook Rd, Newbury Park, Ilford IG2 7JA Tel No & Fax Mobile Reg Charity No stteresas.np@gmail.com Website: Parish Priest: Fr Matthew Bemand-Qureshi THE 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B) - 30 SEPTEMBER 2018 This week two important parish celebrations occur on the same day: the feast of our patron, St Thérèse of Lisieux, and the anniversary of the dedication of this church. Due to the way the calendar works, on Monday we celebrate the dedication anniversary as this is considered the greater celebration, and St Thérèse s feast is (just for us) transferred to Tuesday. At the end of each Mass this weekend we will say the following novena prayers, which have been offered throughout this week as part of our preparation for the feast: Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of divine love. V./ Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created. R./ And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: O God, who have instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be ever truly wise and rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

2 Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love: O my God! I believe in Thee: strengthen my faith. All my hopes are in Thee: do Thou secure them. I love Thee: teach me to love Thee daily more and more. Act of Contrition: O my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. Concluding Prayer: O Lord, You have said: Unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven; grant us, we beg You, so to follow, in humility and simplicity of heart, the footsteps of the Virgin blessed Thérèse, that we may attain to an everlasting reward. Amen. Let us never underestimate the power of prayer which, together with our daily turning away from sin and turning to the Lord, is the greatest weapon we have against the evil one. Let us follow the way of St Thérèse, attaining holiness by simple acts of love. Let us remember we also have on our side the heavenly army lead by St Michael, whose feast day occurs on 29 September, and perhaps get into the habit of regularly calling on their assistance with the traditional Prayer to St Michael: Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,o Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Parish - Regular Notices SICK AT HOME OR IN HOSPITAL: If anyone is seriously ill at home or is in hospital, it is most important to let Fr Matthew know so that the sick person may receive the spiritual help of the sacraments. Relatives or friends should also inform the Catholic Chaplain of the hospital concerned (at King George Hospital, ; at Queen s Hospital, ; at Whipps Cross Hospital, ). PRAYERS FOR THE SICK: Please pray for those in our community who are sick and housebound as well as the patients in Goodmayes, King George s and Queen s Hospitals. Parish - In & Around DEDICATION ANNIVERSARY & ST TERESA'S FEAST DAY: There will be an additional Mass at 7 pm on this coming Monday (01 October), before the meeting of the Parish Council. All are welcome. LIFTS TO CHURCH: It was noticeable last Sunday that numbers were down, which may be linked to the wet weather. For some people getting to church in poor weather is a genuine concern. It may be that some of you are in a position to offer a lift or would very much like a lift to church particularly when the weather is bad. This is also a good way of getting to know others in the parish. If you are able to offer a lift to someone on a regular basis, or if you could really do with a lift to church, please contact the Parish Office. If we can find a suitable match, we will then facilitate an introduction. OFFERTORY COLLECTION: The Offertory collection (inc. Standing Orders) for last weekend totalled , of which 72% was Gift Aided. Thank you all for your continued generosity and support. Also, please do consider making your donation by Standing Order as there are significant benefits to the parish if you do so. MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING: Many thanks to everyone who supported the Catholic Women s League s fundraising efforts last weekend which raised 102 in aid of Macmillan Nurses. CAFOD HARVEST FAST DAY: This coming Friday, (05 October) has been designated as Harvest Fast Day. On this day, CAFOD invites us to share in the abundance that God has given us. We are asked to fast, pray and give to help people like Longora, who lives in a remote village in Uganda. The area is so hot and dry, that people used to struggle to get enough clean water to survive. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners in England and Wales, CAFOD has made sure Longora and her neighbours now have a reliable supply of clean, safe water. On Friday therefore, CAFOD invites us to eat simply perhaps having a bowl of soup instead of a meal and give the money we save to help people like Longora. Please take a Fast Day" envelope home with you today and bring it back next weekend with your donation and put in the Offertory collection basket. Please try and give as much as you can so that hunger doesn t remain a fact of life and, if you are able to do so, also please Gift Aid your donation. LEGION OF MARY HOUSE ROSARIES: The first House Rosary in October will be held at the home of the Gillan family, 5 Suffolk Rd, on this coming Friday, (05 October) at 7 pm and all welcome. DIVINE MERCY RETREAT: St Teresa s will host a Divine Mercy Retreat led by the Marian Fathers on Saturday, 13 October from am 4.30 pm. Jayanand, an International Catholic Lay Preacher from India, a Healing Service will take place here in St Teresa s on Tuesday, 16 October at 6.00 pm. The service will include - Anointed Praise & Worship, Scriptural Talk and Prayers for healing. Everyone is welcome so please Come and Be Blessed!

4 TREASURE HUNT AND LUNCH: Our Knights of St Columba are holding a family Treasure Hunt after the am Mass on Sunday, 21 October, with prizes to be won. This will be followed by a Parish Bring and Share lunch open to all. More details to follow. ROTAS: The new rota for the Flower Group effective from this weekend is now available at the back of the Church. A copy can also be found on the Notice Board in the Church and on the Parish website. MISSIO RED BOXES: Whenever you return your box to be emptied and counted, please ensure that you can be identified as the box owner. This will be of enormous help to Fay Ghosh, the Missio Organiser, in keeping her records up to date. BECOMING A CATHOLIC: If you are feeling drawn to the Catholic faith and would like to begin exploring the possibility of baptism or being received into the full communion of the church if you were baptised in another Christian community or completing the journey of initiation if you have not yet been confirmed, please speak to Fr Matthew as soon as possible. There will be a course of preparation leading up to the celebration of these sacraments at Easter, so it is important to have this conversation sooner rather than later. You will not be committed to anything at this stage, only encouraged to seek the gift of faith with an open heart. IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: The annual Parish Dinner & Dance will take place this year on Friday, 14 December at Luigi s Restaurant, Gant s Hill. The event will be limited to a maximum of 70 people and tickets, which will again be priced at 35 each, will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Early reservations with Jane on are therefore highly recommended for this popular parish event. Before then though, we have the annual Christmas Fayre which will take place on Sunday, 25 November. To make this event a success we shall once again need your specific help in providing donations for the various stalls and raffles e.g. bottles, toiletries, tins, cakes, biscuits etc. So, from now on, please do start putting aside whatever items you can for this important fund-raising event. Also, if you are able to help out in any way, either before the event or, on the day itself, please contact Jane on CHURCH CAR PARK: Please remember it is essential that emergency vehicles have clear access to the Church at all times. During the week, please do not park in front of the Hall gate, and remember to leave your details at the Parish Office if you are leaving your car here outside Mass times. CHURCH GROUNDS: Please remember to do what you can to keep the church grounds tidy - if you see some litter and it is safe to do so, please pick it up and put it in one of the two bins provided. VISITORS: If you are a visitor to St Teresa s then you are most welcome and we very much hope you enjoy the service you are attending. If you are a tax payer and would like to Gift Aid your Offertory donation, then please use one of the special Gift Aid envelopes which you will find at the back of the Church.
