This famous passage of Scripture is very important to us because it deals with the fundamentals of Christianity: Why are we Christians? Why has God chosen us to be Christians? Why has God given us of his Spirit? Is it just so we can go to heaven? No, that is important, of course, but there is far more to being a Christian than that. In verse 16 Jesus said that we have not chosen him, but he has chosen us and has appointed us to go and bear fruit for the Father. The Greek word translated 'appoint' in that verse means 'to put, or to place someone in a position'. Jesus has chosen us and has placed us in our position, as Christians, so that we can bear fruit for the Father. God expects us to bear fruit for him. What s On Monday The Legion of Mary meets at 5.30 pm in the Parish Centre - new members always welcome. Tuesdays at 1.30pm in the Presbytery RCIA in the Afternooon., finishing at 3pm. Wednesday Baby & Toddler Group meets after the 9.20am Mass. Everyone very welcome! Wednesday at 8.00pm. Saturday 9th of May at Westminster Cathedral Hall, London SW1P 1QW Family Life International hold their annual conference. Amongst the speakers will be Bishop Patrick O' Donohue and Fr Linus Clovis. There are two vacancies on the Parish Council which need to be filled. You will be expected to take on a real leadership role, if you feel that the Lord is calling you to serve the Church in this way. Please speak to Fr Gerry after Mass. Please make every effort to attend. The meeting should last no longer than 30 minutes. ENRICH YOUR MARRIAGE - A Marriage Encounter Weekend gives married couples time to look at their relationship. The weekend is spent listening to a series of presentations on various aspects of relationship, including the Catholic Church's Vision for Marriage. After each presentation some time is spent together as a couple, reflecting on what has been heard. It is a private weekend with no group discussions. PIUS CHARITY SHOP ( The Faith Store ) We are now well into the process of organising this exciting venture! A company called The Faith Store has now been set up, and final negotiations are taking place regarding the lease of the shop opposite Somerfield s in Rochford. We still need more volunteers to offer a regular time to man the shop. No one will be left alone, and full training will be given, so this might be just the thing to get you out of bed in the morning! There are volunteer forms in the church porch for you to fill in and return to Tracey. If you have a few hours a week or fortnight that you could spare or would like to find out more, please call Tracey on Regular service of Exposition and Benediction on the last Tuesday of every month at 10.00am at St Pius X. The next one will be on May 26th. Why not put the date in your diary now?

3 Val Hawes Commissioning Many of you will know that Val Hawes has been preparing to be commissioned as a Pastoral Assistant over the last year at Brentwood Cathedral, and you will have seen her taking on a more active and visible role in the parish in preparation for this. The Bishop will be commissioning her at 7.30pm on Friday 10th July at the Cathedral, and it would be excellent of we could be there to support her. Altar Servers Rota Next week: May 17th Mass. 4 St Teresa s Children s Liturgy in the Porch The children who come to Mass at St Teresa s are superbly served by Christine Challis and her team on the Children s Liturgy, and we are very grateful for the wonderful work they do in helping us to teach the faith to our children. As you know, they have to go out to the Parish Centre in all weathers, and be separated from us for their Liturgy. It would be so much better if they could work in the porch at the back of church. We have had an estimate for the work that would need to be done, but there are no doubt many of you who could help out by doing some of the work for us. If not, perhaps you might consider contributing towards the cost of one or more sections of the project. We print the estimate below, and invite you to offer what you can to help our children feel more close to us in the Mass. Amen. 1st Collection for 1st March was Our parish costs approximately 1620 each week to run. We now have 455 towards the sound system at Hockley! We need only 45 more to complete the project.
