1 OUR LADY OF CANVEY & ENGLISH MARTYRS 224 Long Road, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 0JS Parish Priest: Fr Eamonn Power Tel.: Presbytery Tel.: Office Hours: Monday-Friday pm Charity No Don t sin anymore Dear friends in Christ this weekend we reach the 5 th Sunday of Lent and the intensity increases a little and this is symbolised by the fact that the cross and statues are now veiled in purple. I m sure that by now our Lenten resolutions have grown a little weak, but perhaps we can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that the glorious celebration of Easter is now only two weeks away! In the gospel passage this weekend we hear the encounter between Jesus and the woman caught in adultery. The condemning crowd were baying for her death by stoning and according to the Law as it was at that time, they were within their rights to do so. But the Lord, when challenged, tells the crowd that the one without sin should be the first to throw a stone. The episode concludes with the Lord s words, go and don t sin any more. It illustrates that the Lord is ever merciful to those who are truly repentant, but we should always have a purpose of amendment! Confessions will be available both before and after both weekend Masses for the next two weeks and after the weekday Masses Monday to Thursday inclusive Doreen Hind RIP Our friend Doreen passed away on Tuesday of this past week. As yet we have no other news than that. We pray for her and all those who mourn her passing at this time. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen Shared Stations of the Cross We have organised with our friends next door in Saint Nicholas church to have two separate devotional Stations of the Cross, one here in Our Lady of Canvey and the second in Saint Nicholas church. The one here is on Monday this week, the 8 th of April at 8.00pm in the church, followed by refreshments in the hall, and the second one the following Monday, the 15 th at 8.00pm at Saint Nicholas church, also at 8.00pm. How nice it would be to see a good number of Catholics turn up and support these two events! Palm Sunday Blessing of the Palms starting in the hall & then procession outside (weather permitting) & then into the Church. God Bless you all, Fr Eamonn

7 Healing Mass of the Resurrection (family tree) There will be a healing Mass of the resurrection, otherwise known as a family tree healing, on Tuesday the 16th of April, starting at 7.00pm with rosary. The full schedule is as follows: 7.00pm Rosary, with preliminary prayers for family tree healing 7.30pm Mass 8.15pm family tree prayers after Mass with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, chaplet and prayers for healing Those who wish to do so are invited to sketch out their family lines on paper and place this on the altar, otherwise just come and submit them in your hearts. All are welcome. A Date for your diaries, Saturday June 15 On this day we will host the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima here in Canvey, together with the relics of Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta! It will be a day of devotion and prayer in honour of Our Lady, stressing how she leads to Christ and how, through prayer, we can help bring about the conversion of our fallen world. The day will include Mass, talks on Our Lady, veneration of the relics, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and consecration to Our Lady. More news will be given on this later. Friday morning healing prayers and blessings Just a reminder again my friends that on every Friday morning, after the Mass, those who have time are invited to stay behind, pray the Chaplet of Mercy and to come forward, if they wish, for a healing blessing, including a blessing with the relic of Saint Padre Pio. This will be a regular feature of life here as long as I am in the parish let us thank God for all the healings and blessings he has given through this ministry. Lenten devotions Again this coming week there will be Stations of the Cross after the morning Mass on Wednesday. On Friday we have the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 7.00pm, followed by Stations of the Cross. Maundy Thursday Please could we ask for 12 men to volunteer for washing of feet on Maundy Thursday. Please make yourself known to Dennis Williams or Fr Eamonn if you are happy to volunteer. Many thanks.
8 Questions on the Catholic Faith What was the first human sin? When tempted by the devil, the first man and woman allowed trust in their Creator to die in their hearts. In their disobedience they wished to become "like God" but without God and not in accordance with God (Genesis 3:5). Thus, Adam and Eve immediately lost for themselves and for all their descendants the original grace of holiness and justice. What is original sin? Original sin, in which all human beings are born, is the state of deprivation of original holiness and justice. It is a sin "contracted" by us not "committed"; it is a state of birth and not a personal act. Because of the original unity of all human beings, it is transmitted to the descendants of Adam "not by imitation, but by propagation". This transmission remains a mystery which we cannot fully understand..
