1 September 21, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Bishop Timothy J. Lyne September 25th - 1st Anniversary of his death At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend of those in Heaven and on earth and under the earth. Philippians 2:10

2 CHUNK OF LIMESTONE Thursday, September 25, will be the first anniversary of the death of the beloved Bishop Timothy Lyne. He died in the Cathedral rectory which is named in his honor and where he lived for over 48 years. He was 94. During his 70-year career in Holy Orders, Bishop Lyne was assigned to just three parishes St. Mary s in Riverside; St. Edmund s in Oak Park; and Holy Name Cathedral. The bishop arrived here as parish administrator in 1966 along with Bishop Cletus O Donnell who was named pastor/rector. A year later when Bishop O Donnell was appointed to Madison, Wisconsin s Church, Timothy Lyne stepped up as pastor/rector, a position he held for 23 years. Meanwhile, he was ordained a bishop in 1983 and became the first episcopal vicar of Vicariate II, the Cathedral s section of the Archdiocese. Even after his retirement in 1995, Bishop Lyne stayed at Holy Name Cathedral and served the Archdiocese as Vicar for Senior Priests, a job he continued lovingly until the day he died. Certainly, the highlight of his time at Chicago s Cathedral must have been the visit of Pope St. John Paul II in October, Do a You Tube search typing John Paul II, Holy Name Cathedral and enjoy several clips of the visit featuring the saintly Pope just one year into his pontificate and Father Tim Lyne beaming with joy just three spaces to the Holy Father s right. The pastor was 60 years old, three years younger than I am today. My favorite Bishop Lyne story is not among the many he zestfully told about his own life, but one of the last stories told about him. With failing eyesight and uneasy legs, Bishop Lyne rarely said Mass on his own in his last couple of years. He did, however, concelebrate daily with one of the other Cathedral priests, mostly at 12:10pm. Last year, on September 24, I was the 12:10 s main celebrant assisted by Deacon Stan Strom. Bishop Lyne concelebrated and heard me preach from the Book of Ezra about the building of the Temple. I made a comparison to the Houses of God that have been important to each one of us. After Mass, I quickly hung up my vestments and rushed off to the office. Bishop Lyne took his time. It was Deacon Stan who noticed the bishop shuffle back into the sanctuary, look at his Temple, and pronounce out loud, I think we did alright with this place. That was the last time Timothy Lyne ever saw Holy Name Cathedral. On Thursday, the anniversary of his death, pray for Bishop Lyne. More than anyone, he was one of us. By coincidence, also on Thursday this week, we remember Father Joseph Roles, pastor of Holy Name parish in the pre-cathedral era, He was pastor when Abraham Lincoln was President. Roles also was important in the speaking tour that raised funds around the country for the construction of our present Cathedral in after the Chicago Fire destroyed the former Church on the south side of Superior. He went on to become pastor of Old St. Mary s where, in 1888, he welcomed Father Augustus Tolton, the first identifiable African-American priest, a former slave. Tolton is being considered for canonization. Pray for Father Roles on Thursday, the 125 th anniversary of his death. Once upon a time, he was our pastor. There are two new beautiful memorial walls to each side of the center State Street doors in the hallways between the center and side doors. In the north hallway the most significant donors to the Restore & Renew parish capital campaign are remembered. Restore & Renew, which began in 2007, raised money that was used to re-construct the rectory and offices; to clean up the lower level of the Cathedral, making it useful, practical, and secure; to construct a perfectly matching extension on the Cathedral housing our elevator; and to renew the courtyard which will be unveiled at the end of this month. Again, let me thank all the donors listed on that wall. The design is much easier to read than the temporary commemoration that preceded this one. In the south hallway there is a roster of all the men who have been honored to serve as pastors and rectors of Holy Name going back to the pre-cathedral days, the founding of the parish in Jeremiah Kinsella was #1; I am # 19 (Father Roles is #8; Bishop Lyne #17). The parish pastors formerly were included along with a list of Chicago s auxiliary bishops on the brass plaque installed by Bishop Lyne in the vestibule to the left of the inside doors in However, the ordination of three new bishops in 2003 pushed the pastors off the bottom. Finally, my brothers and I have a home of our own, and I can rest easy without worrying about my predecessors scowling at me! I thank the Cathedral s Chief Development Officer Morgan Hennington for arranging for both walls of recognition. The Parish Pastoral Council under the leadership of Kyle Williams (chair) and Lori Doyle (vice-chair) organized a wonderful parish leadership morning last weekend that gathered the volunteer lay leaders of the parish to brainstorm potential programs and events under the umbrella of the Archdiocesan Strategic Plan theme of the year, the Sacraments. Such a workshop has been an annual fall event for the past several years. However, never was such a morning so wellattended, never was it so lively, and never was it so full of exciting possibilities. All four Commissions participated Parish Life, Adult Religious Education, Evangelization & Spiritual Life and Human Concerns. Several staff members were present; a couple staffers even spent the entire morning. Brief presentations were made by other ministries the Young Adults, the Black Catholics, the Catholic Filipino Network, the October 24 Gala (get your tickets!). The success of the morning was obvious in the list of possible future programs and events. On my way home to the rectory, I smiled. This is a strong parish! Cardinal George is a most capable religious leader; still he has physically limped since he was a young teen with polio. Stevie Wonder is a world-famous popular singer; yet he is blind. Bill Veeck was a creative, entertaining sports-team executive who planted the vines at Wrigley Field and led his 1959 White Sox to the World Series; yet he had a wooden leg (with an ash tray built in). Holy Name Cathedral is the most beautiful Church in Chicago and a dynamite parish; however, our Cathedral is an old building. As I announced last weekend at most of the Masses, two weekends ago, a piece of the 1875 Joliet decorative limestone fell off the front of the Cathedral. Thanks be to God, no one was hurt. Immediately, out of extreme concern, we roped off the State Street doors, still with accessibility to the Cathedral on Superior. We called in experts to visually inspect the building. After securing the necessary city permits, engineers and masons were hoisted up to hand-check the wall. With last weekend s Mass schedule, two weddings, and the Golden Anniversary celebration with Cardinal George and over 400 couples married in 1964 approaching, the workers constructed a canopy to keep us safe and to re-open the State street doors. Their work continued this past week with plans to continue with the inspection and repair of the longer north and south sides of the building. I hope the project does not take very long. I hope it does not throw a chunk of limestone into the net that already holds a heavy debt from our previous structural, fire, and rectory construction expenses. Say prayers. - Msgr. Dan Mayall

7 September 21, 2014: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 7 What is a Parish Tea? You may have enjoyed an Afternoon Tea at one of our local hotels, but have you ever attended our Parish Tea? Are they different? Yes, just slightly. #1. Everyone is welcome at our Parish Tea. #2. It is free, no charge! #3. Each of our four parish commissions, our Parish Pastoral Council, and several of our ministries will display information about upcoming events and all the activities that make our parish so vital. And each display has a treat to eat! #4. Finally there are teas and frappe to sip and snacks and desserts to nibble, and people to meet and mingle. Please join us on Sunday, October 5 th, from noon to 2pm. Do you like to Bake? October Bakers Needed On Thursday evenings, our parish provides meals for the local hungry at Catholic Charities. 130 guests are served a warm meal provided by a local restaurant or purchased through Jewel Food Store. To add a homemade touch to the night, homemade desserts are also served. Would you be willing to bake for our guests in October? We need 130 large cookies, ( 4 inches) or 260 smaller cookies or cupcakes or banana loaves or whatever is your favorite to bake. If you or your family or your circle of friends are in the baking spirit, please call Fr. John Boivin at to a schedule a date.

8 September 21, 2014: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 8 Do you shop at Jewel? Are you saving the green stamps for Cuisinart cookware? If you are not, we are!!! Last year the Jewel promotion featured stamps for dishware. Your collective response to that appeal was 16 sets (4 table settings of four). They were all shared, some to parishioners and others to House of Good Shepherd who help families with domestic violence start a new household. As one parishioner said, I have never had a matching set of four for 4 people in my entire life! So if you have any extra not-to-be-used green stamps throughout these next few months, please consider dropping them off in the collection or at the rectory to the attention of Fr. John Boivin. Can you spare some change so I can get something to eat? We want to help but we are: Uneasy when approached by someone in need, Worried about pulling out a wallet or opening a purse Concerned that our money might be used for drugs or alcohol Those who ask for money on the street have many needs: a job, a place to live, counseling, - and a way out of a bad situation. Professionals are the best people to help with all these needs. What we can do is help make sure no one goes hungry. We can at least buy this person a cup of coffee or a sandwich. Chicago Shares vouchers are a convenient, safe and constructive means to provide meals and other necessities for hungry people. Here s how they work: 1. Purchase $5 books of $1 Chicago Shares vouchers, 2. Give vouchers to needy people who ask for money on the street, 3. Recipients redeem vouchers for food and other basic necessities at participating merchants, and 4. Chicago Shares reimburses merchants for all vouchers redeemed. October Speaker Friday, October 3, 2014 Noon to 1:15 PM In the Main Dining Room of the Union League Club The First Friday Club of Chicago Welcomes Mr. Dan McGrath President, Leo High School Who Will Address the Topic WHO IS WINNING THE GAME? HOPE OR HOPELESSNESS Each morning the "Breaking News" sections of the Internet editions of the Tribune and Sun-Times publish the violence reports in the Chicago area for the past 24 hours. The reports resemble war zone information on the dead and wounded. But these are not battle ready soldiers or enemy combatants. They are our fellow citizens in and around Chicago - and - many of them young. They have died before they had a chance to live; their dreams buried with them. In spite of the data that tells us that the murder rate is declining, there is a feeling of hopelessness in too many neighborhoods all around us. So who/what is winning? Hope or Hopelessness? Mr. Dan McGrath, for 13 years the sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, has moved from the Tower on Michigan Avenue to a greystone building on West 79th street, just west of Halsted in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. He is beginning his fifth year as President of Leo High School, his alma mater, an all-male Catholic school serving an urban population from some of the most disadvantaged areas of the city. Please join us at the inaugural gathering of the new season of The First Friday Club of Chicago on October 3rd from noon until 1:15. You will have the opportunity to become a member at the October lunch. Since 2007, the modest membership rates have been unchanged; however, to cover increases in expenses, FFCC membership rates for the coming year will be increased slightly. The new membership rates are; Member-$50; Patron-$75; Supporter-$125; Benefactor-$150 and Sponsor-$250. To reserve your place for the October 3, 2014 meeting of The First Friday Club of Chicago, please call no later than Noon Tuesday, September 30. Please give the number of reservations needed and any dietary restrictions. The lunch fee is $35 for members and $40 for guests. Once your reservation is made, your lunch fee is required, even if you are unable to attend. The Union League Club has a dress code: business attire for women; a shirt with collar for men; no tennis shoes or jeans. Chicago Shares vouchers will be on sale at Holy Name Cathedral this Sunday, September 21, 2014 in the Cathedral Vestibule, inside the State Street entrance from 9AM until 12:15PM. *Chicago Shares may also be purchased in the rectory office.
