2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Q. What is meant by the human Soul A. A Catechism based answer would be: The spiritual principle of human beings. The soul is the subject of human consciousness and freedom; soul and body together form one unique human nature. Each human soul is individual and immortal, immediately created by God. The soul does not die with the body, from which it is separated by death, and with which it will be reunited in the final resurrection. The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual. The biblical account expresses this reality in symbolic language when it affirms that then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Man, whole and entire, is therefore willed by God. (CCC362) In Sacred Scripture the term soul often refers to human life or the entire human person. But soul also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him, that by which he is most especially in God s image: soul signifies the spiritual principle in man. The human body shares in the dignity of the image of God : it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit. The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the form of the body: i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature. The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God - it is not produced by the parents - and also that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection. (CCC 366) Sometimes the soul is distinguished from the spirit: St. Paul for instance prays that God may sanctify his people wholly, with spirit and soul and body kept sound and blameless at the Lord s coming. The Church teaches that this distinction does not introduce a duality into the soul. Spirit signifies that from creation man is ordered to a supernatural end and that his soul can gratuitously be raised beyond all it deserves to communion with God. (CCC 367) So does animals have souls? Animals have souls--and so do plants. Does this answer sound like something out of the New Age movement? Don t worry--it isn t. Rest assured we re not saying animals and plants have souls like ours. The soul is the principle of life. Since animals and plants are living things, they have souls, but not in the sense in which human beings have souls. Our souls are rational--theirs aren t--and ours are rational because they re spiritual, not material. 4 6 TH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Now you are Christ s body, and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Matthew 10: Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. Online registration is also available at saintjudechurch.org Each 22 nd of the month, we will have the St. Sharbel Relic for your prayerful veneration from - The Blessed Massabki Brothers Abdel Moati Massabki, Francis Massabki, Raphael Massabki) are three maronites saints from Damascus. The three were brothers and children of Nehme Massabki. They were killed by Muslims inside Franciscan church in Damascus while they were praying. Pope Pius XI proclaimed the beatification of the three brothers in Feast Day - July 10 Prayer & Novena to the Blessed Massabki Brothers Oh Lord Jesus, Son of God, You who have promised to glorify those who glorify You, and to acknowledge those who acknowledge You, look at us with Your merciful eyes, and answer the prayers we raise to You through your martyrs the Franciscan priests and the three brothers Francis, Abdel Mooti, and Raphael, who acknowledged You before everyone, glorified You before nations, and died courageously for You. Accept this prayer that we raise to Your greatness, for rapidly confirming their sanctity if You mercifully allow it, and bestow upon us the necessary blessings, especially (name of requested blessing). May glory be upon You. Amen. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, given the name Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks (1656 April 17, 1680), is a Roman Catholic saint who was an Algonquin Mohawk laywoman. Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, on the south side of the Mohawk River, she contracted smallpox in an epidemic; her family died and her face was scarred. She converted to Roman Catholicism at age nineteen, when she was renamed Kateri, baptized in honor of Saint Catherine of Siena. Refusing to marry, she left her village and moved for the remaining 5 years of her life to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal in New France, now Canada. Tekakwitha took a devout vow of perpetual virginity. Upon her death at the age of 24, witnesses said that minutes later her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful. Known for her virtue of chastity and mortification of the flesh, as well as being shunned by some of her tribe for her religious conversion to Catholicism, she is the fourth Native American to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church and the first to be canonized. Under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, she was beatified in 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica on 21 October Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.
