4 Saint Mark Parish Celebrating 100 Years St. Mark Wainwright Summer Program The parish summer program in Wainwright Park Program dates are July 10-August 18, Monday - Friday, 10am-4pm. The program serves youth ages 6-15 years old and includes recreation, enrichment, field trips, and lunch. The cost is $20 per week, per child. All age groups are on a waitlist. If you would like to register a youth on the waitlist or contribute in any way, please contact the program at wainwrightpark@gmail.com or The Wainwright Park Family Fun Days will be held on Saturday, July 22 and Saturday, August 19; 11-4 pm (weather permitting). A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the Wife of Bath, by this telling remark: Husbands at church door she had five. Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. 5 Christ Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Saint Ambrose-Saint Mark Collaborative News The Collaborative is holding a Collaborative Logo Contest, open to all parishioners. The idea is to design a logo which encompasses both parishes. This logo will be used on all Collaborative material. The lucky winner will receive $ All entries must be in by August 1, 2017 and be submitted to the Rectory. The Ashmont Farmers Market returns for its 9th season. It will provide access to fresh produce and will give you the opportunity to come together around table games, community resources, live music and other activities in Peabody Square. The 2017 market season will continue through October 13 on Friday afternoons from 3 to 7 pm on the Ashmont MBTA plaza. Saint Mark St. Vincent de Paul Society s Food Pantry Any parishioner wishing to obtain a bag of groceries may do so by coming to the rectory each third Monday, of the month from 10:00 am 12:00. (this is the only time you can obtain groceries) The next Food Pantry Day will be held on July 17th. Please bring identification with you. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha (pronounced [ˈɡaderi deɡaˈɡwita] in Mohawk), given the name Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine [3][4] and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks (1656 April 17, 1680), is a Roman Catholic saint who was an Algonquin Mohawk virgin and laywoman. Born in Auriesville (now part of New York), she suffered from smallpox as a young child, which scarred her face and greatly weakened her eyes. She converted to Roman Catholicism at age nineteen and was renamed Kateri. She settled for the remaining years of her life at the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal in New France, now Canada. Tekakwitha took a devout vow of perpetual virginity. She was baptized in honor of Saint Catherine of Siena. Upon her death at the age of 24, minutes after her death, witnesses say her scars vanished and she appeared radiant and beautiful. Known for her virtue of chastity and mortification of the flesh, as well as being shunned by her tribe for her religious conversion to Catholicism, she is the fourth Native American to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. [5] Under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, she was beatified in 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica on 21 October [6][7] Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.
