2 From the Deacon s Desk Here are some often asked questions about attending Mass (known as the Divine Liturgy in Eastern Church traditions) Q. Is going to Mass on Sunday an obligation? Yes. The third commandment of the ten commandments has not changed over the past thousands of years. It is still Keep Holy the Lord s day. Sunday celebration of the Lord s Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church s life. The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass. Q. I am spiritual and on Sundays I stay home and pray to God do I still need to go to Mass? Yes. I am sorry but I cringe when I hear this question. The question is not are you spiritual, it is what is required of the faithful being a practicing Catholic.:...the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and his Church. Q. I am 65 years old, an official senior. Is there an age limitation to the obligation of attending Mass on Sunday? No. When it concerns one's obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sunday, there is no cut-off age. Q. Are there serious reasons for not attending Mass? Yes. Some guidelines are: serious illness, a disability, such as being unable to walk, the Church is located at a great distance and you have no means of transportation, to pay for a taxi or public transit to attend Holy Mass would cause great financial hardship, or other valid reasons, - please contact the pastor of your Church, requesting to be dispensed from attending Holy Mass. Q. If I attend a wedding (nuptial Mass) or funeral (funeral Mass) on Saturday morning/afternoon, does this fulfills my obligation for attending Mass that weekend? No. The requirement for participating in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is not fulfilled by attending these special Masses. Sunday obligation is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day (Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation) or at the designation vigil Mass (the evening of the preceding day (CCC2180) Q. I heard that it is all right to continually be late for Mass just as long as one attends certain required parts of the Mass? No. There are no "minimum requirements." The Church wants you to get to Mass on time and stay for the whole Mass. 4 10 TH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now in regard to spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware. You know how, when you were pagans, you were constantly attracted and led away to mute idols. Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the spirit of God says, Jesus be accursed. And no one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. Matthew 12:22-32 Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute. He cured the mute person so that he could speak and see. All the crowd was astounded, and said, Could this perhaps be the Son of David? But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, This man drives out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. But he knew what they were thinking and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house divided against itself will stand. And if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, will his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. How can anyone enter a strong man s house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. 5 Six Ways I Can Make My Parish Better #1 Think of yourself as part of a parish family. #2 Be welcoming. #3 Use your gifts and talents for the good of the parish. #4 Attend parish events. #5 Support your parish financially. #6 Pray for Your parish. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Jn. 13:35 What shall I render to the Lord for all this bounty to me? Ps. 116:12 Give and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. Lk 6:38 Do one thing to make this parish a better place! To live charitably means not looking out for our own interests, but carrying the burdens of the weakest and poorest among us. But to ask "when must the person arrive and when can he leave" implies that attendance at Mass is a burden to be shed as quickly as possible, rather than a privilege and a gift granted by God through his Church. Unavoidable delay does not excuse being late week after week. But we should not view the word obligation as a bad thing. Going to Mass is not a punishment, it s not a chore to get out of the way so you can go to the movies or out to brunch. The Mass is celebrated at Christ s instruction, Do this in memory of Me. If we all take a moment to understand why participating in Mass is so important, why skipping Mass is a mortal sin, maybe obligation will no longer seem like such an imposing word. Understanding why the Mass is so important is the first step to loving the Mass. And when you come to love the Mass, going to church on Sunday no longer feels like an I have to, but instead becomes an I need, I want to." God Bless You, Deacon Jack
