2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Hope in a time of Poverty - from Pope Francis: I wish to extend an invitation to solidarity to everyone... this means caring for the dignity of the person, but above all I would say do not lose hope In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus steps onto the lake shore from a boat and sees a vast crowd. His heart was moved with pity for them (Mt14:14). The Lord calls us to see a growing number of poor and vulnerable persons. He asks that our hearts be moved with compassion for the more than 46 million persons and almost 10 million families now living in poverty in our country. Christ s tenderness and merciful gaze go out to them. As servants of Christ, we take the side of those suffering poverty. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has given us a poignant example of compassion. With him, we show our loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. As disciples, our challenge is to pattern society on God s love, oppose injustice, and suffuse our common life with charity in truth. While many speak of a recovery, today the economy still denies many a just and living wage. Women and men still struggle to build a marriage and a home where families can grow. Now is a moment for discernment for all concerned about the common good. It is time to come together to shape a new vision for the future. In order to promote a deeper understanding of the Church s social teaching in this time of global economic crisis, the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development has released a series of messages on poverty and today s economy. Below are the four areas that the Bishop s have provided reflections on and calls us to action: This link will take you to the page to read more about the four areas. Nutrition and Food Security - Well over forty million Americans live in poverty. There are more than twenty million unemployed and underemployed workers searching for a decent job. These are people in our families, neighborhoods and parishes. Persons living in poverty are especially vulnerable to hunger. The scandal of hunger, about which Pope Francis has spoken, calls us to reach out to our hungry neighbors, those the Lord speaks of in Matthew 25. Fair Wages and Economic Security - Healthy families make healthy communities, all working together to protect human life and dignity and promote the common good. 4 DAILY READINGS 1 Timothy 4:6-16 Counsel to Timothy Brothers and Sisters: If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives tales. Train yourself in godliness, for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. These are the things you must insist on and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. Praise be to God always! Luke 12:42-48 Vigilant and Faithful Servants The Lord Jesus said: Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that slave says to himself, My master is delayed in coming, and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful. That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. This is the truth. Peace be with you. TIMOTHY Born at Lystra, Lycaenia, Timothy joined St. Paul when Paul preached at Lystra replacing Barnabas, and became Paul's close friend and confidante. He accompanied Paul on his second missionary journey. When Paul was forced to flee Berea because of the enmity of the Jews there, Timothy remained, but after a time was sent to Thessalonica to report on the condition of the Christians there and to encourage them under persecution, a report that led to Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians when he joined Timothy at Corinth. Timothy and Erastus were sent to Macedonia in 58, went to Corinth to remind the Corinthians of Paul's teaching, and then accompanied Paul into Macedonia and Achaia. Timothy was probably with Paul when the Apostle was imprisoned at Caesarea and then Rome, and was himself imprisoned but then freed. According to tradition, he went to Ephesus, became its first bishop, and was stoned to death there when he opposed the pagan festival of Katagogian in honor of Diana. Paul wrote two letters to Timothy, one written about 65 from Macedonia and the second from Rome while he was in prison awaiting execution. His feast day is January 26. Creation gives glory to God, and in making wise use of it, the human family is built up. In looking after the environment, we care for our neighbor and pass on a gift to generations to come. Immigration - These brothers and sisters of ours were trying to escape difficult situations to find some serenity and peace; they were looking for a better place for themselves and their families... How often do such people fail to find understanding, fail to find acceptance, fail to find solidarity. Pope Francis I invite you to take a look at these reflections crafted by our American Catholic Bishops. These are often framed as political or worse political party affiliations. If so that is not what is important. These issues deal with Christian Justice. As the photo of Pope Francis hanging on the wall in our social hall by the kitchen door says Let s Journey Together. God Bless You, Deacon Jack DeaconJack@SaintJudeChurch.org (excerpt from the Homily) HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS MIDNIGHT MASS SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD PAPAL MASS Vatican Basilica Sunday, 24 December 2017 In the Child of Bethlehem, God comes to meet us and make us active sharers in the life around us. He offers himself to us, so that we can take him into our arms, lift him and embrace him. So that in him we will not be afraid to take into our arms, raise up and embrace the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned (cf. Mt 25:35-36). Do not be afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ. In this Child, God invites us to be messengers of hope. He invites us to become sentinels for all those bowed down by the despair born of encountering so many closed doors. In this child, God makes us agents of his hospitality. Moved by the joy of the gift, little Child of Bethlehem, we ask that your crying may shake us from our indifference and open our eyes to those who are suffering. May your tenderness awaken our sensitivity and recognize our call to see you in all those who arrive in our cities, in our histories, in our lives. May your revolutionary tenderness persuade us to feel our call to be agents of the hope and tenderness of our people.
