2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Today we start the Season of Announcement with the announcement to Zechariah that his wife will conceive and bear a son despite their advanced age. This is not the only miraculous birth recorded in the Bible. Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age so that God s promises to Abraham could be fulfilled. In the period of the Judges Samson is born to Manoah and rescues Israel from the oppression of the Canaanites. Like John, he was a Nazirite and wore the seven locks of hair symbolizing his dedication to God. The final instance in the Old Testament is the birth of Samuel to Hannah who was also thought to be barren. He bridged the period of the judges and that of the kings in the same way that John bestrides Old and New Testament and is the precursor of the Lord. For those of us who believe these events are signs of God s providence. Sadly today many just write them off as myths which cannot be substantiated. Even Zechariah who lived a blameless life doubted and was punished by being muted until John s circumcision. There are times when we find our faith challenged, times when we find it hard to believe. Events in our lives which give rise to questions which we have difficulty answering. It is then above all that we need our faith and the ability to put things in the hands of God. If we cannot do this we may well feel our burdens are too heavy to bear and be crushed by the load of our troubles. If, however, we have faith we will find that God helps us bear our burdens. He may not take the problems away but he will give us the strength to bear them and we will always have the hope of sharing in the resurrection and entering the kingdom of glory. This Season of Announcement reminds us that God keeps his promises and naturally prepares us for the keeping of his greatest promise of all, the Glorious Birth of our Savior. There will be many distractions during this season, preparations for Thanksgiving as well as Christmas, but let us not forget why we are giving thanks and whose birthday we are celebrating on December 25th. How sad if all our efforts go into enjoying ourselves and we forget to give thanks to God for all that he has given us. How empty will our Christmas be if Christ is left outside! May you have a blessed Season of Announcement and may your prayer and reflection on the mysteries of this season enable you to truly celebrate the wonderful love of God. God Bless You, Deacon Jack DeaconJack@SaintJudeChurch.org Sat 11/17 5:30 pm Sun 11/18 9:15 am Sun 11/18 11:15 am Mon 11/19 Tues 11/20 6 pm Wed 11/21 6 pm Thur 11/22 Fri 11/23 12:15 pm Sat 11/24 5:30 pm Sun 11/25 9:15 am Sun 11/25 11:15 am + For the Parish + World Peace + Asaad Awad RIP by the Awad Family + + Elie Bitar RIP by Leila Dergan + + NO MASS + For the Victims of the California Shootings + For the Parish HAPPY THANKSGIVING + NO MASS + For All Souls + For Peace in our Country & the World + For the Victims of the California Shootings Mass Intentions + Wilfred Pio L. 4 ANNOUNCEMENT TO ZECHARIAH Romans 4:13-25 God s Promise Realized through Faith Brothers and Sisters: The promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, I have made you the father of many nations ) in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations, according to what was said, So numerous shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now the words, it was reckoned to him, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Praise be to God always! Luke 1:1-25 Birth of John the Baptist Foretold The Evangelist said: Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed. In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years. Once when he was serving as priest before God and his section was on duty, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense. Now at the time of the incense offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. But the angel said to him, Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Zechariah said to the angel, How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years. The angel replied, I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur. Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and wondered at his delay in the sanctuary. When he did come out, he could not speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept motioning to them and remained unable to speak. When his time of service was ended, he went to his home. After those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she remained in seclusion. She said, This is what the Lord has done for me when he looked favorably on me and took away the disgrace I have endured among my people. This is the truth. Peace be with you.
