2 From the Deacon s Desk The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to help our neighbor in their spiritual needs. This is the first part of two parts of the United States Council of Bishops (USCB) suggestions for practicing the Spiritual works of mercy. COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way. Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise (Prov 19:20) The Cross of Christ the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength (1 Cor 1:25) Has someone asked you for advice? Orient your response to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life Follow Christ with the witness of your life so that others may see God s love revealed in your actions Accompany a friend who is struggling with believing to join a parish group for service or faith formation, share a book you found useful in dealing with your friend s faith concern, and worship at Sunday Mass INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith. Go on a service trip or short term mission trip. No time? Donate to support someone on their service trip Volunteer to help with religious education programs at your parish Invite someone to go to mass with you this weekend ADMONISHING THE SINNER Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ. In humility we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times Don t judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt 7:1-2) When you correct someone, don t be arrogant. We are all in need of God s loving correction. 4 4 th Sunday of the Resurrection Hebrews 13:18-25 Final Exhortation, Blessing, Greetings Brothers and Sisters: Pray for us; we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you very soon. Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been set free; and if he comes in time, he will be with me when I see you. Those from Italy send you greetings. Grace be with all of you. Praise be to God always! John 21:1-14 The Appearance of the Seven Disciples The Apostle writes: After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will go with you. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, Children, you have no fish, have you? They answered him, No. He said to them, Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you? because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. This is the truth. Peace be with you. 5 What does the Resurrection mean for our lives? And why, without it, is our faith in vain? Our faith is based on the death and resurrection of Christ, just like a house built on foundations: if they give in, the whole house collapses. On the Cross, Jesus offered himself taking sins upon himself and going down into the abyss of death, and in the Resurrection He defeats them, He removes them and opens up to us the path to be reborn to a new life. St. Peter expresses it briefly at the beginning of his First Letter, as we have heard: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you (1:3-4). The Apostle tells us that the Resurrection of Jesus is something new: we are freed from the slavery of sin and become children of God, that we are born to a new life. When does this happen to us? In the Sacrament of Baptism. In ancient times, it was normally received through immersion. Those to be baptized immersed themselves in the large pool within the Baptistery, leaving their clothes, and the bishop or the priest would pour water over their head three times, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Then the baptized would emerge from the pool and put on a new vestment, a white one: they were born to a new life, immersing themselves in the death and resurrection of Christ. They had become children of God. - from Pope Francis MOTHER S DAY REMEMBRANCE If you would like to remember your mother, grandmother, godmother etc., living and deceased, please write their names on an envelope & drop it in the collection basket with your donation or mail it to the parish. The names will be put on the altar during the Masses the weekend of Mother s Day 7-8 and remain on the altar throughout the rest of the month. FIRST COMMUNION SECOND PENANCE The Sacrament of Penance (Second Reconciliation) will be celebrated on Saturday, April 23 rd, at 10 a.m. Both parents should attend with their child.the First Communion celebration will be held on Saturday, April 30 th, at the 11 a.m. Mass. Our St. Jude children are celebrating their First Communion on April 30. Please pray for them as they receive Jesus for the first time. Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist You left us the outstanding manifestation of Your limitless love for us. Thank You for giving our children the opportunity to experience this love in receiving the Sacrament for the first time. May Your Eucharist presence keep him/her ever free from sin, fortified in faith, pervaded by love for God and neighbor, and fruitful in virtue, that he/she may continue to receive You throughout life and attain final union with You at death. Amen. Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, November 20, 2016 St. Jude Parish is designated a Holy Door parish. Those who make a pilgrimage to St. Jude and go through the Holy Door, attend mass, go to confession, receive communion & pray for our Holy Father s intentions will receive a special indulgence.
