2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Last Sunday our Gospel was the Marriage Feast of Cana and throughout Lent all but two of the Sunday Gospels will deal with miracles performed by our Lord. I would therefore like to reflect on what a miracle really is, the significance of miracles in our lord s ministry and what this Sunday s Gospel means for us. A miracle may be described as an event for which no natural cause can be discovered. In order for a person to be canonized at least two miracles, usually healing ones, must be shown to be the result of devotions to that person. The Vatican is very thorough in verifying the original diagnosis as well as the cure for which there is no human explanation and so you see we do still live in the age of miracles! Our Lord worked many miracles during His life. He changed the water into wine at Cana, multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed the 5,000 and in today s Gospel heals a leper. These miracles have one thing in common, they are all demonstrations of Our Lord s power which is His as the Son of God and which comes directly from the Father. This becomes clearer when we remember that many of the ills from which people suffered were seen as the result of the power of evil. Our Lord is therefore portrayed as one whose power is greater than the power of evil by overcoming its consequences. Leprosy was a dreadful disease for which there was no cure. The spontaneous remission shown by some probably meant that they had been misdiagnosed in the first place. Those who really had leprosy faced a life of isolation and an agonizing death. Not surprisingly many authors used the term leprosy of sin to convey the spiritual consequences of sin on our souls. Just as actual leprosy disfigures the body and results in death so the leprosy of sin disfigures our souls and may result in the extinction of the life of grace within us. In this penitential season of Lent, this analogy is particularly appropriate not only because it reminds us of the consequences of sin but especially because we are reminded that we can be healed by Almighty God if we repent of our sins and ask forgiveness. A simple act of contrition is sufficient for less serious sins but if we are conscious of serious or mortal sins we must go to confession to be assured of God s forgiveness and a fresh start. Let us therefore approach the Lord on bended knee and ask Him to heal us of our sins so that the image and likeness in which we were created may be restored and even improved. Fasting in the Maronite Church involves eating and drinking nothing at all (except water and medicine) from midnight until noon. The rest of the day, normal meals can be taken but without meat. All Maronites who are physically capable are to fast on these two days. LENTEN QUOTES Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Romans 2:4 SPECIAL REMINDER - Please schedule your Masses & Memorials for your loved ones ASAP, The book is open. Do not wait until the last minute to make all your arrangements and have the dates you want. Stop by the office at your convenience Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. Bassam POPE FRANCIS reminded the faithful that they should heed the Scriptures and treat each human person they encounter as a gift. Lent is the favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in His word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor, he said. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need. POPE FRANCIS INTENTIONS February Universal: Say No to Corruption That those who have material, political or spiritual power may resist any lure of corruption.
4 EPARCHY OF SAINT MARON OF BROOKLYN Office of the Bishop 109 Remsen Street Brooklyn, New York Tel: (718) Fax: (718) Lent 2018 Prot. No. 100/1/18 S Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Eparchy of Saint Maron exists to serve you, the Maronite faithful, and to preach the Gospel to all people. We can only do this effectively with your financial support. Today, I ask you to make a sacrificial gift to the Eparchy s Annual Lenten Appeal. The proceeds of this year s Appeal will go for the following needs of the Eparchy: Seminarians: Our seminarians are our future. We need your help so we can invest in their education and formation. We currently have four seminarians and three men in discernment. Each seminarian costs about $40,000 per year, in the form of tuition, books, room, board and insurance. 40% of your contribution to this year s Annual Appeal will go for Seminarian Expenses. Retired Priests: Collectively, the 15 retired priests of the Eparchy served the faithful for over 500 years. Now, we help them with a modest pension of $1,800 per month. 20% of your contribution will go to support Retired Priests. Helping in Lebanon and the Middle East: The Eparchy assists Lebanon and Syria in countless ways, for example: by applying for grants to American foundations and donors, advocating for them with the U.S. government, and channeling and providing direct financial assistance. 10% of your contribution will go to support Christians in Lebanon and the Middle East. Endowment: The Eparchy s Endowment Fund provides a source of income each year for the needs of the Eparchy and ensures that the Eparchy will have solid resources in the future. It also provides a rainy day fund in case of disaster. 30% of your contribution will be deposited into the Eparchy s Endowment. Please open your heart once again to help with these critical needs. Your gift makes a positive difference in the lives of so many throughout the 16 states of the Eparchy, stretching from Maine to Florida. Any gift you make will have a positive effect. Thank you very much. May God bless you for your generosity! I wish you a holy Lent and a blessed Easter. Gratefully yours in Christ, + Gregory J. Mansour PS: Please also consider remembering the Eparchy and your parish in your estate plan, or as the beneficiary of an insurance policy, retirement plan or charitable gift annuity. Thank you.
5 SAINT JUDE MARONITE CATHOLIC CHURCH 5555 Dr. Phillips Blvd. Orlando, FL February 9, 2018 My Dear Parishioner, Each year with the arrival of the Lenten season, the American Bishops initiate their annual appeal. The attached letter from our Bishop Mansour appeals for this year s support of our Eparchy Diocese. Each parish is given an assessment. Ours is $9, for this year s appeal. In his letter, Bishop Mansour outlines some of the many services and projects that your generosity provides support for: Education of the Seminarians, Pastoral Care through the Diocesan offices, Missions, for the retired Priests, help for the Church in Lebanon and the Middle East and Endowment. Your contribution to the Bishop s Appeal provides us with an opportunity to participate in the ministry and mission of the Eparchy -- a community of faith and the rich Maronite tradition that extends beyond the boundaries of any one parish. As your pastor, in this year, I am asking that we at St Jude do the following: Through your generosity and the Bishop Appeal giving, raise the $9,000 so that we can respond to Bishop Mansour s appeal and assessment without having to use our much needed and limited operating funds. We all pray for our Bishop and all Bishops as they shepherd the faithful for the glory of God. Don t ask yourself How much can I afford to give? Ask instead How generous do I want God to be with me? Then be that generous yourself. Our God expects us to be generous with the things He has given us. Please help us reach our Goal. Please make your check payable to St. Jude Catholic Church with Bishop Appeal in the Memo. Thank you for your generosity and support. May our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, continue to bless you and your family and St Jude parish and reward you for your Support and generosity. Peace of Christ, Fr. Bassam M. Saade Fr. Bassam M. Saade, D. Min. Pastor PLEASE NOTE: ST. JUDE'S ASSESSMENT IS $9,000. Your generosity is appreciated.
6 HEALING OF THE LEPER Romans 6:12-23 Freedom from Sin; Life in God Brothers and Sisters: Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who has been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Praise be to God always! Mark 1:35-43 Jesus Leaves Capernaum/The Cleansing of a Leper The Evangelist writes: In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, If you choose, you can make me clean. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, I do choose. Be made clean! Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him, he sent him away at once. This is the truth. Peace be with you.
