2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Today we are celebrating the feast days of the Righteous and Just, those who have been welcomed into the glory of heaven where they will spend eternity in the presence of Almighty God. We are not only celebrating the feast of the saints who have been officially recognized by the Church and canonized as examples of holiness to inspire us. We are also celebrating those countless numbers of men, women and children from every race, color and creed who have sought to do God s will. They have achieved sainthood, we are called to sainthood. St Paul always addressed his letters to the saints of Corinth, Rome etc. Not that they were already saints, many were real sinners, but like us they were called to be saints and in our Gospel reading today Our Lord tells us what we need to do to be included among the saints and admitted to his Kingdom. Come, you who are blessed by my Father... For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? And the king will say to them in reply, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. We are called to minister to Our Lord through our service to those in any kind of need. Whenever we minister to those in need we minister to Our Lord. When we fail to respond with love to others we fail to respond to Our Lord and when we cause harm to others we harm Our Lord. If we cause harm knowingly and deliberately we are in danger of Divine Condemnation. Our Gospel reading gives concrete examples of loving our neighbor as ourselves and doing to others as we would have them do to us but what about loving God with all our hearts, souls, minds and strength? This does not seem to be covered here but in fact it underlies everything because the motive behind all these good works is love of God and the recognition that we show that love for him by loving those whom he loves, in other words everyone. As we give thanks for the wonderful example and encouragement of the saints let us pray that we will respond to our call to sainthood by loving and devoting ourselves to God above all and showing that love through lives of loving service to those in any kind of need. If we do that, even if we fall short from time to time, one day we too will hear those words, Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 4 SUNDAY OF THE RIGHTEOUS & JUST HEBREWS 12:18-24 Penalties of Disobedience - Brothers and Sisters: You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word to be spoken to them. (For they could not endure the order that was given, If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death. Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, I tremble with fear. ) But you have come to Mt. Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. MATTHEW 25:31-46 The Judgement of the Nations - The Lord Jesus says: When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory, All the nationals will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Then he will say to those at his left, You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you? Then he will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. This is the truth. Peace be with you. In the spirit of environmental and economic sustainability, we have partnered with GotSneakers, a sneaker recycling organization, which will compensate $1 for every pair of used but still wearable sneakers we collect. There is no limit to the amount of money we can raise. The more we collect the more we earn!! After the sneakers are collected, GotSneakers will process and distribute these sneakers around the world, specifically within impoverished nations. Also, the entire amount we earn through this collection will be donated to SESOBEL in Lebanon to pay for physical therapies and other primary needs for disabled Children. It is estimated that over 300 million pairs of sneakers are thrown away each year in America s landfills and that over 600 million adults and children worldwide live barefoot. We can touch the lives of thousands by simply cleaning out our closets and collecting our unwanted sneakers. And as a result we will also be helping our brothers and sisters in Lebanon. Three causes with one act! The request is simple: Clean out yours and your family s closets of all unwanted paired sneakers. Please bring them tied together in garbage bags to Parish.
