2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Q. What are the Psalms A. The psalms are one hundred and fifty prayer poems collected in a single book called the Psalter. Tradition has then associated with King David, thus making them over 1,000 years old. All were probably intended to be sung or accompanied by music. But not all are alike. Many are brimming with joy and praise god s goodness; others are filled with sorrow and lament and a spirit of contrition. Some are aimed at sickness or bad fortune in life; some were used on weddings or other special occasions. But by having them all, we are able to see a depth and width of Israel s attitudes toward Yahweh not present in any other book of the Bible. In Hebrew, the Book of Psalms is called tehillim, that is, Praises. The name captures the meaning of these songs better than any other word. Even in psalms of deep sorrow and distress, the note of confidence and trust in God s goodness always comes through. As they stand today, the one hundred and fifty psalms do not seem to have any special subject order or theme development from one end to the other. It seems rather that the present book is made up from many smaller collections. For one thing most psalms have a label at the beginning which says of David, of Asaph, of Korah, or of others. These labels do not necessarily mean that the psalm was written by the man, rather that it came from the collection under his name in some cases, collected by him, or written by him, or just related to the office he held. Thus many David psalms probably mean from the royal collection, while Asaph psalms mean of the temple collection. For one thing, the psalms seemed to be grouped in small collections. These many collections at some time were organized into five books. Thus we have the following five-part order in the present book: Book1 - Psalms 1-41, an early collection of Davidic hymns Book2 - Psalms 42-72, a northern collection of hymns Book3 - Psalms 73-89, a collection from the temple singers Book4 - Psalms , psalms from a royal collection, perhaps for New Year s Book5 - Psalms , a second and expanded Davidic royal collection. Each of these divisions is marked by a special prayer and blessing of praise that serve as the last verse. To appreciate the beauty of the psalms, we must begin to read them for two things: the beauty of their language and images, and the unique thought and individuality of each. There are six major types recognized by most experts: 1. Hymns of praise 2. Thanksgiving hymns 3. Individual laments 4. Community laments 5. Royal psalms honoring either Yahweh as king or the earthly king as his deputy 6. Wisdom psalms Despite their public use, most of the psalms contain a very personal note, including strong emotions and personal concerns that express the psalmist s anguish or great joy. 4 2 ND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY 2Corinthians 4:5-15 The Paradox of the Ministry Brothers and Sisters: We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture I believed, and so I spoke we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. Praise be to God always! John 1:35-42 First Disciples The Apostle writes: The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, Look, here is the Lamb of God! The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, What are you looking for? They said to him, Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas (which is translated Peter). This is the truth. Peace be with you. POPE FRANCIS INTENTIONS JANUARY 2019 Evangelization - Young People That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.

5 PARISH NEWS St. Jude s Family Religious Group St. Jude church is in the process of forming a St. Jude s Family Religious Group. The goal of the group is to create a sense of community by getting parents and children involved in church s religious and social activities. An Arabic learning course will be also available. If you or your child is interested in joining the group, you may contact Nahi Bassil at (703) nbassil@ncua.gov or Simon Obeid at (704) simonobeid@yahoo.com. The first meeting will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2019 after Mass at the church s hall. St. Charbel Family Prayer Group St. Jude Church is forming a prayer group under the name of St Charbel Family Prayer Group. The Group s goal is to imitate St. Charbel s spirituality. The Group s main activities include Bible study, prayers, religious presentations, and Spiritual Retreats. If you would like to join the Group, please contact Dr. Maha Zikra at (407) The first St Charbel Family meeting will take place on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 7:30 PM at St Jude s social hall. St. Jude Youth Group All youth age 13 to 18 are encouraged to join the Church s Youth Group for religious and social activities.
