2 Vatican City, Sep 29, 2018 Pope Francis has asked all Catholics to pray the rosary daily during the month of October, asking Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel to intercede for the protection of the Church in a moment of "spiritual turbulence." A Sept. 29 statement from the Vatican said that Pope Francis had recently affirmed that prayer "is the weapon against the Great Accuser who 'goes around the world seeking to accuse.' Only prayer can defeat him." "The Russian mystics and the great saints of all the traditions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God," the statement added. The pope said that recitation of the rosary would invoke Mary's intercession, placing the Church under her "protective mantle." The statement also encouraged the prayer of Sub Tuum Praesidium: "We fly to Thy protection, 0 Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, 0 Glorious and Blessed Virgin." The pope did not specify the "spiritual turbulence" to which he referred, but did say that prayer could help the Church to become "more aware of the faults, the errors and the abuses committed in the present and in the past, and committed to combating without any hesitation, so that evil may not prevail." Pope Francis also encouraged that Catholics end the rosary with the recitation of the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, composed by Pope Leo XII: "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, 0 Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen." TIME TO GET READY IS NOW! If you can help us with a basket of merchandise, monetary or gift certificate to help us in our efforts, we would appreciate it. Because this is a major fundraiser, every parishioner is asked to participate in this event. Please make a tray, basket, or perhaps give an equivalent donation. It is because of the kindness of people like you that we are able to offer this special event and make it even better than last year. You can be as creative as you like. 4 4 TH SUNDAY AFTER THE HOLY CROSS 1 Thessalonians 5: Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, Peace and security, then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman and they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do. Matthew 24: Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so. Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself, My master is long delayed, and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
