2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Today is Cana Sunday and we reflect on the abundance of Our Lord s generosity in sparing the hosts the embarrassment of running out of wine. Our Lord was no killjoy and it is important to remember this as we enter the season of Lent on Ash Monday. Why? Because sometimes people think that the only good Lent is a miserable one where we give up things, make ourselves miserable and become absolute pains to those around us. This is not only, not good, it is positively bad! It is we who are supposed to do our penance not those around us. Before we decide what penance we are going to do we should reflect on the reason we are doing it and what we are hoping to achieve by it. As I have said before, penance is linked to the idea of repentance which is not just being sorry for past shortcomings it is also means changing direction or turning over a new leaf. Whatever penance we do during Lent should therefore help us to turn away from past sins and bad habits and embrace our Christian vocation more enthusiastically. The three traditional ways of doing penance: prayer, fasting and good works. Prayer includes all forms both private and public but the Way of the Cross is particularly suited to Lent recalling as it does our Lord s Passion and death which won our salvation. Fasting is usually understood to relate the quantity of food we eat. In fact fasting covers any form of voluntary self-deprivation and could include TV, computer games and TEXTING. Freeing up time from our busy lives is important so that we can use that time to be together more as a family, have time for extra prayer and most importantly have time for good works. All methods of doing penance are good but doing good works is the Golden Way because it is a practical way of showing our love of neighbor by helping them in some way. As I said earlier, a penance should make us a better person and so which combination of penances each of us chooses should address our spiritual deficiencies. Neither should we regard ourselves as limited to one penance only. We could do all three forms either all the time or on different days of the week and so we might do a prayer penance on Mondays and Thursdays; a fasting penance on Tuesdays and Fridays; and good works on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Sundays we should attend the Divine Liturgy and perhaps do the Way of the Cross before or afterwards, fast from SHOPPING and spend time with family and perhaps visit someone who is lonely or ill. If we spend our Lent in this way we will find great fulfillment and actually enjoy our penances. More importantly we will become better Christians and human beings. Fasting in the Maronite Church involves eating and drinking nothing at all (except water and medicine) form midnight until noon. The rest of the day, normal meals can be taken but without meat. + + All Maronites who are physically capable are to fast on these two days. The three traditional ways of doing penance: prayer, fasting and good works. Lenten Quotes Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23 Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? Romans 2:4

4 CANA SUNDAY Romans 14:14-23 Consideration for the Weak Conscience - Brothers and Sisters: I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. If your brother or sister is being injured by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. So do not let your good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual up-building. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for you to make others fall by what you eat; it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble. The faith that you have, have as your own conviction before God. Blessed are those who have no reason to condemn themselves because of what they approve. But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat, because they do not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. Praise be to God always! John 2:1-11 The Wedding at Cana - On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of His signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. This is the truth. Peace be with you. 6 EPARCHY OF SAINT MARON OF BROOKLYN Office of the Bishop 109 Remsen Street Brooklyn, New York Tel: (718) Fax: (718) Lent 2019 Prot. No. 018 S / 19 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During our short time on this earth, we prepare ourselves for the day when we shall stand before God to make an account of how we have spent our lives. In the meantime, we serve with love. The Church, founded by Christ, is the prime vehicle of this love, and of our service, and this is the sole purpose of the Eparchy of Saint Maron of Brooklyn. Today, I write to ask you to help your Eparchy fulfill her divine mission with love. We have a blessed opportunity to share our gifts so that the Eparchy can continue to serve the faithful throughout its entire 16- state area. Your generosity towards this year s Annual Eparchial Appeal will support: Our Seminarians are our future. We need your help so that we can invest in their education and formation. We currently have six. Each seminarian costs about $45,000 per year, in the form of tuition, books, room, board, health insurance and other costs. 40% of your contribution to this year s Annual Appeal will go for Seminarian Expenses. Retired Priests: Collectively, the 15 retired priests of the Eparchy have served the faithful for over 500 years. We help them with a modest pension of $1,900 per month. 20% of your contribution will go to support our Retired Priests. Helping in Lebanon and the Middle East: The Eparchy assists Lebanon and Syria in countless ways, for example: by applying for grants to American foundations and donors, advocating for the persecuted Christians of the Middle East with the U.S. government, and channeling direct financial assistance. 10% of your contribution will go to support Christians in Lebanon and the Middle East. Endowment: The Eparchy s Endowment Fund provides a source of income each year for the needs of the Eparchy and ensures that the Eparchy will have solid resources in the future. It also provides a rainy day fund in case of disaster. 30% of your contribution will be deposited into the Eparchy s Endowment. I pray that you will open your heart once again and consider giving a gift. Your participation in this Annual Appeal makes a positive difference in the lives of so many people throughout the Eparchy, from Maine to Florida, and in the Middle East. Any gift you make will help. Thank you, and may God bless you for your generosity. I wish you a holy Lent and a blessed Easter. Gratefully yours in Christ, + Gregory J. Mansour PS: Please also consider remembering the Eparchy and your parish in your estate plan, or as the beneficiary of an insurance policy, retirement plan or charitable gift annuity. Thank you.

8 FROM YOUR DELEGATE What is NAM? Here s the book definition - The National Apostolate of Maronites serves as a unifying force among the laity of the Maronite Church in the U.S.A. and as a common link between the clergy and the laity. NAM helps preserve the Syriac-Maronite traditions by making people aware of the rich heritage of the Maronite faith and by fostering pride in the Maronite Church. Here s my experience- NAM is the place we all get together to experience our faith and culture with friends, family, and clergy in one of the U.S.A. s captivating cities. We explore our roots; learn about American culture from each region, and most of all, we are helping the youth and future of our Maronite community. FUN! What does NAM have to offer? NAM offers- Scholarships to the graduating youth, Vocation Awareness Contests, Awards for outstanding support of the church and NAM, Retreats-regional, The Cedar Tree Program in Becharre, Lebanon, CONVENTIONS, The NAM Spring Raffle, and much, much more!! What does all this mean- The scholarships are awarded to students that are NAM members and exhibit the message and passion of NAM and the MYO. The Vocation Awareness Contests allow the younger members of the youth, the MYO, to get involved with something to give back to NAM. The outstanding awards are for members of NAM that excel above and beyond the call of duty to make either the CONVENTION or their community/parish a better place through NAM. Regional retreats make everything a little more convenient. Although we don t have many, when we do they are worth the trip and spiritual experience. The Cedar Tree Program allows our Maronite community to be responsible for cedar trees being planted in Lebanon in our NAM program s name. Finally, the Spring Raffle is set up by the delegates and is one of the major fundraisers. NAM MEMBERSHIP Top 10 reasons the become a member- #10- To receive the various members' benefits such as discounts at CONVENTIONS and eligibility for awards, etc. #9- to meet new friends and relatives at NAM s gatherings and through its communication network. #8- to become eligible to serve as an official NAM delegate, representing your parish at NAM CONVEN- TIONS and other gatherings. #7- to be "in tune", "on line", and, in general, be kept informed on the apostolate and the "Maronite environment" in the USA. #6- to offer your financial support to the apostolate's programs of service to the Maronite church. #5- to be a part of NAM s "unifying force" which creates a bridge between the eparchies, across the entire USA from coast to coast, and between the USA and our spiritual home, Lebanon. #4- to confirm your commitment to NAM's apostolic mission and acknowledge your support of its programs of service. #3- because NAM is the largest Maronite organization in the world, serving the Maronites of the USA since 1964, and because it's time you became an official member! #2- because it's your apostolic duty as a Maronite catholic to help serve and build up the church, especially the church of beit maroon. #1- because you're proud of your Syriac Maronite heritage and want to help NAM foster and preserve it for future generations What is this Convention talk? NAM CONVENTION 2019! This year, the NAM CONVENTION is in Miami, Florida. More information and news about the upcoming national CONVENTION can be found on its own website:
