2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Today s Gospel reading is the first of four miracles which are often referred to as controversy stories because in them Our Lord s actions give rise to increasing controversy. In today s account Our Lord tells the paralyzed man that his sins are forgiven. In Jewish belief only God can forgive sins which is why the scribes think he is blaspheming. Many Jewish people also believed that sickness was a punishment for sin and so using this idea Our Lord asks, Which is easier to say Your sins are forgiven or Rise, take up your bed and walk? and then heals the paralyzed man proving that he has the power both to heal and forgive sins. Throughout history there has been a tendency to blame all Jewish people for rejecting Our Lord. This is both unjust and inaccurate. Opposition to Our Lord was focused on three principal groups. The Scribes who were expert in the Law, the Pharisees who believed in strict observance of the Law and the Sadducees who, as the descendants of Zadok the Priest, formed the inherited priesthood, a sort of clerical aristocracy. The Scribes and Pharisees objected to Jesus because he did not always observe the Law as in today s gospel where he forgives sins and in last week s when he touched the man suffering from leprosy. Their rage will reach murderous intent when, after healing on the Sabbath, Our Lord states that, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath, and claims to be Lord of the Sabbath. The Sadducees differed from the Scribes and Pharisees in many aspects of belief but were united with them in opposition to Our Lord because they realized that his teaching undermined their authority. Raymond E. Brown, probably the foremost Catholic Biblical scholar of our generation, wrote more than likely were Jesus to appear in our time (with the challenge rephrased in terms of contemporary religious stances) and be arrested and tried again, most of those finding him guilty would identify themselves as Christians and think they were rejecting an imposter. Death of the Messiah p.393 The ordinary people, however, were more open minded and prepared to glorify God and praise Our Lord for the many miracles he worked. As we hear in today s Gospel Everyone was astounded and gave glory to God. Indeed we often find them flocking to him to seek forgiveness, a solution to their problems, healing for their sicknesses or simply to listen to his teaching, Our Lord forgave the paralyzed man s sins and cured his paralysis. Sometimes our sins cause us to be spiritually paralyzed. There are times when that paralysis comes from our being too stuck in our ways, like the Scribes and Pharisees, or because, like the Sadducees, we are too heavily invested in the things of this world and don t want to change. Whichever it is, we remain paralyzed until we are cured by God s grace and restored to full health in the sacrament of Reconciliation. Get rid of the lazy addiction to evil - [Lent] is a powerful season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. 2. Do something that hurts - Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. 3. Don t remain indifferent - Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. 4. Pray: Make our hearts like yours! - During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: Make our hearts like yours Please note - only LED candles are to be used in the church. Take part in the sacraments - Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. 6. Prayer - Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory prayer. 7. Fasting - Fasting makes sense if it leads to some benefit for others. 8. Almsgiving - Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have. 9. Help the Poor - In the poor and outcast we see Christ s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Him. 10. Evangelize - The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news.

4 SUNDAY OF THE PARALYTIC 1 Timothy 5:24-6:5 Rules for Widows - Brothers and Sisters: The sins of some people are conspicuous and precede them to judgment, while the sins of others follow them there. So also good works are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on the ground that they are members of the church; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. Whoever teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. Praise be to God always! Mark 2:1-12 The Healing of the Paralytic - When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door, and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the man on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven. Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts. Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone? At one Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say Stand up and take your mat and walk? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins he said to the paralytic, I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home. And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God saying, We have never seen anything like this! This is the truth. Peace be with you! Contact Sharon, our choir director, at An excerpt from Pope Francis: With Prayer, Good Can Overcome Evil Vatican City, Mar 20, To pray is to believe in God s power to replace the evil in the world with goodness, Pope Francis said at the general audience Wednesday. If we pray it is because we believe that God can and wants to transform reality by overcoming evil with good, he said March 20. This is why it makes sense to obey and abandon one s self to the will of God, even in moments of difficulty and trial. The Christian does not believe in an unavoidable fate, he stated. There is nothing haphazard in the faith of Christians: there is instead a salvation that waits to manifest itself in the life of every man and woman and to be fulfilled in eternity. Pope Francis pointed to the Our Father as one prayer that demonstrates a belief that God s will desires the good of the world. The Lord s Prayer, he said, ignites in us the same love of Jesus for the will of the Father, a flame that drives us to transform the world with love. Continuing his catechesis on the Our Father, the pope reflected on the line, Thy will be done, using the example of Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus, he said, prayed for the Father to take away his suffering, but also said, still, not my will but yours be done. In that moment, Jesus is crushed by the evil of the world, but trustingly abandons himself to the ocean of the love of the Father s will, Pope Francis said. - Catholic News Agency Thank you to all who participated in FRIDAY'S MEATLESS MEAL ON 3/22.
