4 1ST SUNDAY AFTER THE HOLY CROSS 2 Timothy 2:1-10 So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well. Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. To satisfy the one who recruited him, a soldier does not become entangled in the business affairs of life. Similarly, an athlete cannot receive the winner s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer ought to have the first share of the crop. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. Mark 10:35-45 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. He replied, What do you wish (me) to do for you? They answered him, Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized? They said to him, We can. Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Next Week s Readings: 1 Cor 15:19-34 & Mt 24:1-14 DAILY READINGS Mon. "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 FROM THE DEACON S DESK Q. What is grace? Are there different kinds of grace? A. We will assume that this question does not mean grace before/after meals or the song, Amazing Grace but is referring to God s grace. In the short space of the Deacon s Desk, it is near impossible to provide a full and proper answer. For those readers who are using the Catholic Catechism as a reference see Part Three, Section II. The Catechism s short definition is that grace is the FREE and UNDESERVED GIFT that God gives us to respond to our vocation to become his adopted children. Notice the words: free undeserved and gift. There is nothing man can do to merit grace, because it is a gift. There are two types of grace: sanctifying grace and actual grace. Our reality is that our natural nature will never be able to be in the front of the divine and all Holy Trinity. The natural can never be with God, who is supernatural. Our loving Father thus gave us a soul that is supernatural. It has the ability to be divine for we are made in the image and likeness of God. Sanctifying grace stays in the soul. It s what makes the soul holy; it gives the soul supernatural life. It is supernatural life. In many ways it is very simple. If we die with sanctifying grace dwelling in our souls we have the equipment we need to live in heaven (we may need to be purified through the process of purgatory). To live in heaven we need supernatural life. We then will be in perfect and absolute union with God, the source of all life. So how do we receive this gift of sanctifying grace? Very simple through the sacraments and it all starts with Baptism. Every time we receive a sacrament we receive more sanctifying grace. This is especially true when we receive the Blessed Sacrament the Eucharist. It is why the Church encourages us to receive Holy Communion as often as possible. Can we lose sanctifying grace and how? Yes, we can los sanctifying grace by committing serious sin what we call mortal sin. Again, our all loving Father through His divine mercy gives us the sacrament of reconciliation. It removes the stain of sin and gives us more sanctifying grace. If our soul is spiritually dead, we cannot live in heaven. We will face an eternity of spiritual death: the utter separation of our spirit from God. The worst part of this eternal separation will be that we ourselves would have caused it to be that way. The Deacon is not trying to frighten the reader but serious sin is just that serious. Our society today downplays sin. On the other hand, the Church s sacraments are so wonderful and again, we often downplay just how important the sacraments are. Actual grace is given to us by God as an aid to help us along our journey to heaven. It is a supernatural push or encouragement. It s transient. It does not live in the soul, but acts on the soul from the outside. It gets our will and intellect moving so we can seek out and keep sanctifying grace. In summary what is grace? Imagine yourself transported instantaneously to the bottom of the ocean. What s the very first thing you ll do? That s right: die. You d die because you aren t equipped to live underwater. You don t have the right breathing apparatus. If you want to live in the deep blue sea, you need equipment you aren t provided with naturally. You need something that will elevate you above your nature - something super- (that is, above ) natural, such as oxygen tanks. It s much the same with our souls. Grace gives us the equipment to live for eternity with the pure supernatural with the ever loving God. God Bless You, Deacon Jack DeaconJack@SaintJudeChurch.org
