2 FROM THE DEACON S DESK There seem to be experts in every field of knowledge in our modern world and yet if you listen to them in news programs or debates you discover that they often disagree! Indeed I often feel that their debates bring more heat than light and in this election year it is even worse than usual. We also hear of Revelations which are usually of the scandalous sort and do little to make us wiser or bring us peace. This is completely different from the wisdom, revelation and peace which are the main points of our readings this weekend. In our first reading today St Paul tells the Corinthians that he did not come to them with any worldly wisdom but preaching the crucified Christ and promises that a wisdom not of this world will be revealed by the Holy Spirit. In our gospel reading Our Lord promises to reveal himself to those who love him and that the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in his name will teach and remind the disciples about him. Finally he promises them the gift of peace. As I said last week, God had revealed himself in many and fragmentary ways in the Old Testament but in Our Lord, the Word made flesh, God speaks to us fully and it is our belief that nothing remains to be revealed. However our understanding can and should grow and deepen both as a result of our personal reflection and study under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and as a consequence of the Tradition, or handed-down wisdom and beliefs, of the Catholic Church. This revelation is of fundamental importance to being truly wise and without the knowledge and love of God and the gift of wisdom we cannot know peace. I passed an advert the other day which read: No Jesus No Peace Know Jesus Know Peace The peace that Our Lord gives is, as he said, not a peace of this world. It does not come from robust health, an overflowing bank account, successful relationships or a good career. It comes from the knowledge that we are known and loved by God whose Son died that we might live and who not only left us his wisdom in the Scriptures but also his abiding presence in the Holy Spirit to help us to understand that wisdom, that revelation. It comes from giving ourselves in love to God and neighbor and knowing that we are living our lives in harmony with God s will. It comes from knowing that we are held secure in God s embrace and that whatever life might send, nothing can separate us from that love which one day we will enjoy in its fullness for all eternity. 4 CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY 1 CORINTHIANS 2:1-10 THE TRUE WISDOM Brothers and Sisters: When I came to you, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him: - these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. Praise be to God always! JOHN 14:21-27 THE ADVOCATE The Lord Jesus says: They who have my commandments and keep themare those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father,and I will love them and reveal myself to them. Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world? Jesus answered him, Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives, Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. This is the truth. Peace be with you. 5 OUR GOAL Greetings from your parish of Saint Jude Maronite Catholic Church, Recently you received a letter from our beloved pastor, Father Bassam M. Saade regarding our current outstanding mortgage. As he concludes his time with us, it our hope to give him one last gift to make our parish debt free. His ministry to us over these nine years has been exemplary. We are grateful for all he has done for us as a community and for us personally. You most probably have been personally helped by his ministry and service and prayers. Our parish council and others in our parish have wholeheartedly taken up the challenge to make this happen before the end of summer, August 1, While we understand that meeting this goal in a brief few months will be challenging, we have already made our commitment and now ask you to join us and make yours. We have had the opportunity to thank Father Bassam for his 25 years of priestly ministry and for his tenure with us as pastor. Now let us offer one more thanks to plan a mortgage burning party before summer ends. We will not be able to do this without your help! Please be receptive to our phone call or visit; or please call to make your leadership gift to this effort. While this gift will be an encouragement to Father Bassam, it will even more importantly take our parish to the next level of involvement by strengthening the involvement and commitment of all of us in this worshipping community and our commitment as Christians.
