2 From the Deacon s Desk Q. What is Pentecost A. The word pentecost means the fiftieth day. It occurs at the end of the seven weeks following Passover. For Christians it is seven weeks following Easter. Pentecost started as a Jewish festival known as Shavu ot. Shavu ot, the Festival of Weeks, is the second of the three major Jewish festivals with both historical and agricultural significance (the other two are Passover and Sukkot). Agriculturally, it commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple, and is known as Hag ha-bikkurim (the Festival of the First Fruits). Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and is also known as Hag Matan Torateinu (the Festival of the Giving of Our Torah). The Jewish people count each of the days from the second day of Passover to the day before Shavu ot, 49 days or 7 full weeks, hence the name of the festival. For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. At the first Pentecost after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was manifested as the divine Person to the Church, fulfilling the paschal mystery of Christ according to his promise. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called the church. Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. Thus, Pentecost is the church s birthday. As stated in Acts 2:1-4, When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. The Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles. They went out into the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowds gathered for the festival. Not only did the disciples preach, but by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native languages (tongues) of the people present, many which had come from all corners of the Roman Empire. The apostle and first Pope of the Church, Peter addressed the crowd, preaching to them about Jesus death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. The result was the first three thousand converts to the Catholic Church. The new converts were all baptized that day in the Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit that separated the earth from sky and the sea; the same breath that breathed into Adam now comes to rest on a group of frightened people to establish the church. The Church is now left in the hands of common men. But these men are moved by the Spirit. And the word of God cannot be contained. The power of the Holy Spirit is the life of all Christians; as a Church, we are called to reach beyond our own borders, our own comfort and find our place within the entire body of believers. We as Baptized Christians, filled with the same Holy Spirit that came down on the Apostles on Pentecost, are to offer the witness of the kingdom of God to our family, our society and the global community. 4 PENTECOST SUNDAY The Coming of the Spirit/Peter s Speech at Pentecost Acts 2:1-21 Brothers and Sisters: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And Suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Alamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deed of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Praise be to God always! The Advocate John 14:15-20 The Lord Jesus says: If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. This is the truth. Peace be with you.
