Diocese: diolaf.org Sacramental Information & New Parishioners Baptism: Expectant parents, who are parishioners, should contact the office four to six (4-6) months before the birth of the child. Marriage: Couples planning marriage need to make an appointment with the pastor at least six months before the intended wedding date to begin the preparation process. A wedding date cannot be scheduled without approval of the pastor. Anointing of the Sick: Contact the office to schedule an appointment, home or nursing home visit, and, if death is imminent, contact the office for immediate action. First Communion and Confirmation: Contact the Elementary DRE or High School DRE respectively. Holy Communion for the Homebound: Contact the parish office to request a visit. If you are interested in becoming Catholic or receiving Confirmation as an adult, or if you simply want to learn more about your faith, contact the office to inquire about RCIA. Jesus said to them, Come, and you will see (John 1:39). New Parishioner Forms are found in church and on our website (Policies and Forms, Census Form) and should be submitted to the office. Parishioner Funeral: When a parishioner passes away we ask that you please contact the parish office first before going to the Funeral Home. Fr. Mark would like to set up an appointment with the family of the deceased.

2 I Confess The prayer known as the Confiteor the first word of this prayer in Latin, meaning I confess - stands in a long biblical tradition of confession one s sins. Sometimes, this was done in a formal public ceremony of repentance (Neh 9:2). Other times, it was the spontaneous response of an individual (Ps 32:5, 38:18). Confessing one s sins was encouraged in the wisdom of books of the Bible (Prv 28:13; Sir 4:26), and the Old Testament law even required people to confess certain sins (Lv 5:5; Nm 5:7). Some individuals in the Old Testament, in an act of national repentance, confess the sins of all Israel (Dn 99:20; Neh 1:6). The practice of confessing one s sins continued in the New Testament, which begins with crowds following John the Baptist and confessing their sins in his baptism of repentance (Mt 3:6; Mk 1:5). The New Testament elsewhere exhorts Christ s followers to do the same. John teaches that we should confess our sins with confidence that the Lord will forgive us: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleans us from all unrighteousness (1 Jn 1:9). James exhorts us also to confess our sins to one another, asking each other for prayers that we may be freed from our sins: Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another that you may be healed (Jas 5:16). Since confessing sin was a common practice in ancient Israel and in the New Testament period, it is not at all surprising that the early Christians confessed their sins before partaking in the Eucharist. This is seen in one of the earliest non-biblical accounts we have about the Eucharist, found in the early second-century Christian text called the Didache (or Teaching of the Apostles ): Assemble on the Lord s Day, and break bread and offer the Eucharist; but first make confession your faults, so that your sacrifice may be a pure one. This early practice described in the Didache might itself reflect St. Paul s exhortation to let a man examine himself before partaking of the Eucharist, lest he do so in an unworthy manner (1 Cor 11:28,27). Peter and Paul School News Admissions Information New student tours started October 1 st and we encourage those planning to enroll for next year to visit the school to receive important information. Please call to schedule. Living Rosary - Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and the Sts. Peter and Paul Church CCD will be praying a Living Rosary on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at 6:15pm in Sts. Peter and Paul Church. The Campus Ministry will be leading the program. The Second Apostles will be involved with the mysteries. The middle school choir will be singing Marian songs. The third and fourth grade students from the school and CCD program will write prayer petitions to be placed in helium balloons that will be released at the end of the Rosary. We will have fellowship after with hot chocolate and cookies for the whole family on the church property under the big oak trees. It should be a nice event. All are invited to pray the Rosary with us! Superhero Gala We welcome our entire community to join us on November 10 th for our Superhero Gala from 7pm-11pm. 4 e Parish Announcements & Contact Informa on RCIA is offered for adults seeking to become Catholic, or adult Catholics seeking to receive First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or have their civil marriage blessed by God s Church. It is also available to adult Catholics who simply want to continue learning about their faith. RCIA will be available every Thursday from 6:15pm-7:30pm in the parish office. Also if you are interested in becoming a reader or an extraordinary lay minister please contact the parish office. e e The Catholic Daughters (CDA) are inviting women of all ages to join our organization. We assist and service Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Our dues are $25.00 a year and are due in January of each year. We help with receptions, visit the sick catholic daughters in out church parish, recite the rosary at the funeral home for our members and their families upon request, and serve lunch at St. Joseph s Diner. Feel Free to join us at one of our meetings which are held on the third Wednesday of each month with a rosary at 6:30pm and the meeting beginning at 7:00pm. Our next meeting is scheduled on October 17, This will be out last meeting for Our first meeting in 2019 will be help on January 16th. Patrick Broussard, Director of the Diocese of Lafayette Office of Vocations, or visit Lafayettevocations.org Centennial News - Sunday, October 21, 2018 A dream comes true - In October 1948, a long held dream of Bishop Jeanmard came true. Lafayette was to have a minor seminary for young men to begin their studies towards the priesthood. Thirty-three young men were in the first class of students. The official dedication of Immaculata Minor Seminary took place on October 24, 1949, with Bishop Cicognani, the Pope s apostolic delegate to the United States, officiating. The seminary was run by the Society of Mary (Marists) who served as faculty, and the Sisters of the Holy Family who oversaw the domestic arrangements. Immaculata Seminary consisted of four years of high school and the first two years of college. It closed as a seminary in Centennial Mass All are invited the closing Mass for the Centennial Year of our Diocese will be December 12 th at the Cajundome Convention Center at 6pm. Our Diocese and the wonderful people of our diocese and how God has poured forth His Love and guidance upon us in these last 100 Years will be the focus A Century of love. Along with the Mass, there will be a Historical Display before and after the Mass as well as a presentation of the many people and cultures of our Diocese. The doors will open at 4:30 because there will be much to be a part of and see. All Catholics throughout our whole Diocese are invited and encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendars. It's an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to "every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism." Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: "Too much information!" We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don't want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it's about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John's outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been "too much information" for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem "too much" for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God.
