3 January 21, The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Oremus pro invicem. Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway Page Three VATICAN NAMES SAINT MARY FIRST BASILICA IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA Last Sunday, January 14, following our 8:30 a.m. Mass, Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge brought us very exciting news: The Vatican has named Saint Mary as the first Basilica in Northern Virginia! I am very grateful for our Bishop s encouragement and enthusiasm during the many months that led to this announcement. Without his support, cheerfulness and hopeful spirit, we would not be celebrating this wonderful occasion. We are so grateful to the Holy Father for bestowing this honorific title upon our historic parish and its faithful people. A wonderful committee of parish volunteers and staff have been involved in the application process from day one, contributing their expertise and countless hours to researching and preparing the extensive document we submitted to the Holy See. In particular, I would like to thank Mary Petrino for planting the seed that began the process, and to Kitty Guy for her thorough knowledge of the historical background of Saint Mary s. That history is intertwined with the founding of our nation and our God-given freedom to practice our faith. Prior to American Independence, Catholics in Alexandria often worshipped in fear, in a hidden way, because the Roman Catholic Church was greatly restricted in Virginia, as it was throughout most of the English colonies. In 1795, Saint Mary s was founded as the first Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the nation grew, so did the influence of Saint Mary s Parish, solidly establishing Catholicism throughout this region. During its more than two centuries, Saint Mary s has fostered the creation of many other parishes, including St. Anthony, St. Louis, St. Rita, St. Mary of Sorrows, Our Lady of Lourdes and Blessed Sacrament, among others. Bishop Burbidge greets parishioners. Designation as a Basilica now opens a new chapter in our parish history and brings honor not only to our parish, but to the entire Diocese and to Roman Catholics throughout the country. Being named a Basilica carries a special connection for us to the Holy See and the Holy Father in Rome, and recognizes Saint Mary s important role within the history of the universal Church. Now, more than ever, the faithful and others are encouraged to visit this parish and discover the beauty of the Lord and His love for His sons and daughters. We are overjoyed and humbled by the recognition of Saint Mary s as one of the major churches in the world dedicated to Christ. On behalf of the priests and people who have served Saint Mary s faithfully over these many decades, it is wonderful to receive this honor in anticipation of our 225th anniversary, which we will celebrate in just two years, in the Year of Our Lord We are truly blessed. Bishop Burbidge makes the announcement at Mass. Parishioner Mary Petrino is interviewed by NBC-Channel 4. Father Hathaway talks with a reporter from WTOP Radio. Find more information at and

7 January 21, The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Seven AROUND THE PARISH, DIOCESE & BEYOND YOUR ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY & 2018 At our January meeting, after a spiritual reflection on the blessings bestowed on us in our work by our patroness, Immaculate Mary, we affirmed as our priority for 2018 the same as 2017: Keeping families in their homes, whether by providing emergency assistance to avoid eviction, preventing electricity, gas or water from being disconnected, or through our Sustainment Fund to put a family on a secure path to self-sufficiency. At the close of our meeting, we prayed for the intentions of our benefactors, asking Our Lady to bestow blessings on them and their loved ones. Your support in 2017 helped hundreds of our neighbors. Your support this year, as a volunteer or benefactor, will help families in need to move toward the quiet miracle of a normal life.
