3 The Basilica of St. Mary + May 20, Pentecost Sunday + Page Three SPRING SUNDAY SOCIAL Sunday, May 20 Wine & cheese after the 5 p.m. Mass Oremus pro invicem. Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway PENTECOST Today we celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. At Pentecost we find the whole Church present in embryonic form. The Holy Spirit descends to sanctify, guide and enkindle our faith. Our Lady, Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church and each of us, is there. Also present are the Apostles, who will extend Christ s teachings to future generations. At Pentecost, we also experience the preaching of the Gospel, the Sacraments and the presence of all the faithful represented by those who are baptized. ST. MARY PARISH STAFF Sheena Byrne, Receptionist x 3015 / sbyrne@stmaryoldtown.org David Elliott, Director of Music x 3019 / delliott@stmaryoldtown.org Ryan Farrell, Assistant Director of Religious Education x 3023 / rfarrell@stmaryoldtown.org Carmen Federle, Parish Liaison to Diocesan Office for the Protection of Children and Young People cfederle@stmaryoldtown.org John Harchick, Director of Facilities x 3021 / facilities@stmaryoldtown.org Mariane Leite, Assistant Director of Youth & Young Adults x 3030 / mleite@stmaryoldtown.org John Lilly, Director of Communications and Evangelization x 3009 / jlilly@stmaryoldtown.org Emily Liutkus, Bookkeeper x 3010 / eliutkus@stmaryoldtown.org Diane Maple, Bulletin Editor x 3032 / bulletin@stmaryoldtown.org Hilary Munger, Director of Religious Education x 3033 / hmunger@stmaryoldtown.org Elena Otero-Bigg, Office Manager/Assistant to the Rector x 3018 / ebigg@stmaryoldtown.org Arragon Perrone, Director of Youth and Young Adults x 3024 / aperrone@stmaryoldtown.org Naomi Roberts, Administrative Assistant Kristin Smith, Office Administrator x 3029 / ksmith@stmaryoldtown.org Trish Weiler, Director of Finance x 3011 / tweiler@stmaryoldtown.org NEW MARIAN FEAST On March 3, Pope Francis added a new Marian feast to the Church calendar. The feast of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church will now be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost each year. That s Monday, May 21 this year tomorrow! The new feast is tied to the birth of the Church at Pentecost. Right away, the very next day, we now honor Mary as the Mother of the Body of Christ, which is the Church, and Mother of each Christian who is baptized into the Church. The Gospel reading for this new feast (technically a memorial ) is John 19: It recounts how Jesus, from the cross, entrusted Mary to His disciples as their mother and His disciples to Mary as her children. Honoring Mary as Mother of the Church on the day after Pentecost also reminds us that Mary was present with the Disciples on Pentecost, praying with them as the Holy Spirit descended. Since our Basilica is dedicated to Our Lady, we certainly welcome a new feast in her honor! OUR GRADUATING ALTAR SERVERS Our altar servers for the 10 a.m. Mass today are among the 14 young men graduating from high school and, therefore, leaving us as serve. The 14 are: Matthew Cheney, William Cowardin, John Daly, David Dorsett, Timothy Florenzo, Christopher Gaietto, Brendan Griffith, Charles Johnson, Malachy McLaughlin, Timothy Naegele, Andrew Revers, Benjamin Teipe, Gordon Turner and Thomas Vickery. Many have assisted at Mass here since the 5th grade! My sincere thanks to them (and their supportive parents) for serving the parish, helping make the Mass and other liturgies move smoothly and reverently. We wish them well and pray for them in whatever the future brings. God bless! Follow Father Hathaway on to receive daily quotes on Scripture and the Saints!
