Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway Page Three TRUE THANKSGIVING The word Eucharist means thanksgiving. How appropriate then to begin our Thanksgiving family gatherings by first gathering as a parish family, in the name of Jesus Christ, to thank God at Holy Mass. If you are not traveling out of the area this week, I encourage you to join us here for Mass on Thanksgiving Day at 10 a.m. to praise and thank God for the many wonders He has done for us. He is the source of all blessings and the reason we give thanks. Thanksgiving also is the name given to the time of prayer after we receive Holy Communion at Mass. With our Eucharistic Lord truly inside us, and before the Sacred Host is entirely absorbed by our bodies, we have a unique opportunity for deep union with Christ. In that moment, we may pray words of adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and supplication to our Lord so intimately present to us. And rather than immediately exiting our pew following Mass, we might remain a few minutes to reflect on the humbling reality that we have just received Jesus Christ body, blood, soul and divinity. Suscipe A Prayer of Thanksgiving from St. Ignatius of Loyola Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To You, Lord, I return it. Everything is Yours; do with it what You will. Give me only Your love and Your grace, that is enough for me. Amen. PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Tuesday, November 21, is the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast associated with an event found not in the New Testament, but in the apocryphal Infancy Narrative of James. According to that text, Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, who had been childless, received a heavenly message they would have a child. In thanksgiving for the beautiful gift of their daughter, they brought her, when still a child, to the Temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. Later versions of the story tell us Mary was taken to the Temple at around the age of three in fulfillment of a vow. Tradition holds that she was to remain there to be educated in preparation for her role as Mother of God. How appropriate, then, that the oldest preserved prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Beneath Thy Protection (Latin: Sub tuum præsidium), refers to her as Theotokos, the Mother of God. What a wonderful way to remember her on November 21 and every day! We fly to your patronage, O Holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

5 November 19, Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five AROUND THE PARISH, DIOCESE & BEYOND DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON DIOCESE OF RICHMOND Representing the Virginia Catholic Bishops in Public Policy Matters Nov. 8, 2017 Statement by the Virginia Catholic Conference After the election, the work for life and justice continues. For many months Virginians have watched the political campaigns taking place here and wondered how the outcome would affect the direction of our commonwealth. Yesterday, they made their decisions. Today, we at the Virginia Catholic Conference and in the Catholic Dioceses of Arlington and Richmond assure Governor-elect Ralph Northam and all those elected yesterday of our prayers for them and our appreciation for their answering the call for public service. As they strive to serve the more than eight million men, women and children who live in Virginia, we will work with them whenever possible to ensure Virginia laws and policies reflect the common good and the inherent dignity of every human being from the very beginning of life, through and until natural death. We pledge to reach out to them and continue to advocate for policies that protect the most vulnerable in Virginia, especially people who are unborn, elderly, sick, poor, immigrants or refugees. We will work for legislation that protects the family, and that assures Virginia continues to respect religious liberty, especially for faith-based entities that serve so many of our sisters and brothers in need. In this great state, foundational to American democracy, we call on Catholics, people of all faiths and good will and all Virginians to work together to address the needs of our commonwealth through respectful dialogue and civility. THE LEGION of MARY What is it? It s Our Lady s Army, composed of more than two million active members worldwide. What does it do? It makes its members better Catholics through prayer and service (including doorto-door evangelization, welcoming new parishioners and visiting the imprisoned). How does it work? Who can belong to Mary s Army? Nobody for the first three months. That gives you a chance to see how it works with your work and family life. How do I start? If you are interested in joining the Legion here at St. Mary or need more information, please contact Fr. Andrew at or frandrew@stmaryoldtown.org. CHOICE WINE MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT The Choice Wine, our parish marriage enrichment program, meets each third Friday of the month.
