There will be one Mass at 9 a.m. O eternal and everlasting God increase my faith in the sweet promises of the Gospel; give me repentance from dead works; pardon my wanderings; and direct my thoughts unto Thyself, the God of my salvation. Teach me how to live in Thy fear, labor in Thy service and ever to run in the ways of Thy commandments. Daily frame me more and more into the likeness of Thy Son, Jesus Christ. Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway PRESIDENTS DAY & OUR CONNECTION TO GEORGE WASHINGTON Monday, February 18, Presidents' Day, is a national celebration of George Washington s birthday and a time to remember all who have served in that capacity, including our current president. Our parish, established in 1795, has a unique connection to George Washington. Col. John Fitzgerald, an early mayor of Alexandria and close friend of Washington, raised money to build the new church. According to documents found at Washington s Mount Vernon home, our first president made the first donation to construct St. Mary s Chapel on land now used as St. Mary s Cemetery on South Royal Street. A portion of the chapel foundation can still be see there. Our parish offices will be closed on Monday with just one Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. Please join us for Mass or spend some time during the day praying for our president and all elected leaders. THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE To make clear the particular bond by which St. Mary, as a Basilica, is united with the Roman cathedra or chair of Peter, every year we must celebrate with particular care certain feasts connected with the papacy. One is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle on February 22, which celebrates the papacy and St. Peter as the first bishop of Rome. With this feast, we remember the mission given to Peter by Jesus, which has continued in an unbroken line to the present Holy Father. We will mark the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle with a Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., before our 12:10 p.m. Mass. There will be a rosary at 11:30 a.m. St. Peter, pray for us! THANK YOU! Many thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who made our annual Family Bingo Night on February 9 so much fun! All the more so since the event had to be rescheduled from February 1 due to bad weather. Our volunteers were up to the challenge and made it a great family event. Also my appreciation for those who organized our successful Parish Winter Retreat to the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, DC, yesterday, February 16, especially Bill Beach, the Knights of Columbus and our Basilica of St. Mary Rosary Society. We are so very blessed to have this shrine nearby. If you haven t visited it yet, please do! Learn more at

5 The Basilica of St. Mary + Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time + February 17, Page Five WORSHIP & FAITH FORMATION Music Matters Marian Antiphons At the end of Communion at our Masses here at the Basilica, we sing the Marian Antiphon for the current liturgical season. The Marian Antiphons come from the Divine Office or Liturgy of Hours, specifically from the final hour of the day known as Compline or Night Prayer. The four seasonal antiphons are Alma Redemptoris Mater, Ave Regina Caelorum, Regina Caeli and Salve Regina. The Ave Regina Caelorum, which we are currently singing, is sung from the Feast of the Presentation (February 2) through Wednesday of Holy Week (April 17 this year). The full text is: Ave Regina caelorum, Ave Domina Angelorum: Salve radix, salve porta, Ex qua mundo lux est orta: Gaude Virgo gloriosa, Super omnes speciosa: Vale, o valde decora, Et pro nobis Christum exora. Translation: Hail, Queen of Heaven. Hail, Lady of Angels. Hail thou root and gate from whom unto the world a light has arisen. Rejoice, glorious Virgin, lovely beyond all others, Farewell, O most beautiful maiden, and pray for us to Christ.
