Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway I m writing this message on the memorial of St. John Leonardi, who lived at the time of the counter- Reformation, a time when the Church sought to recover and strengthen itself from the scandal, intrigue and confusion surrounding this great division in the Church. He gathered a group of laymen about him to work in hospitals and prisons, became interested in the reforms proposed by the Council of Trent, and proposed creation of a new congregation of secular priests. Great opposition to John s proposal developed, but in 1583 his association formally designated Clerks Regular of the Mother of God in 1621 was recognized by the Bishop of Lucca with the approval of Pope Gregory XIII. John was aided in his effort by St. Philip Neri and St. Joseph Calasanctius. In 1595, the congregation was confirmed by Pope Clement VIII, who appointed John to reform the monks of Vallombrosa and Monte Vergine. He died in Rome on October 9 of plague contracted while he was ministering to the stricken. He was venerated for his miracles and religious fervor and is considered one of the founders of the College for the Propagation of the Faith. He was canonized in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. John reminded the people of his own time to focus on Christ. That s also good advice for us to remember. While the hierarchy is necessary to provide structure to serve and guide the Church, the Church cannot be reduced to its ordained ministers. The Holy Father, our Bishops and priests regardless of their holiness should never be the center of our faith. The center of our Catholic faith is always Jesus Christ who died to save us from our sins and whose death saves us from eternal death. Our Lord is always with and present in His Church, especially in the sacraments. We pray for the leaders of the Church, that justice may be done in the current crisis, and that they may be effective ministers of unity, charity and truth for the building up of the body of Christ and the spread of the Gospel. We pray for ourselves too, that we be witnesses of holiness to our families and society. St. John Leonardi, pray for us! Follow Father Hathaway on to receive daily quotes on Scripture and the Saints!
