Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT Today, the Second Sunday in Advent, we continue our preparation for the Birth of Christ. In addition to His coming in History (mentioned in this column last Sunday), we meditate this week on His coming in Mystery. He does this through the Church, most powerfully through Her Sacred Mysteries the Seven Sacraments. During this holy Advent season, we are especially encouraged to take advantage of the Sacrament of Penance where we truly encounter the mystery of Christ s mercy and healing. GAUDETE SUNDAY Next Sunday, December 16, is the Third Sunday in Advent and Gaudete Sunday, marking the half-way point of Advent as we draw ever-closer to celebrating the birth of Jesus. Please see Fr. David s commentary on page 5 describing the ad orientem posture we will incorporate at es that Sunday. In doing so, we reverently honor and reflect thousands of years of Church tradition. BAMBINELLI SUNDAY December 16 is also Bambinelli Sunday, a touching Advent tradition given to us by Pope St. John Paul II. Early in his papacy he began inviting the children of Rome to bring the little statues of the Baby Jesus from their home Nativity set to St. Peter s Square for a special blessing. Both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have continued the tradition. Here at the Basilica, we are doing the same! 5 The Basilica of St. Mary + Second Sunday of Advent + December 9, Page Five WORSHIP & FAITH FORMATION AD ORIENTEM: Looking to the East Advent is the liturgical season where we look forward to the coming of Christ at the end of time. We prepare ourselves for the return of Christ by reflecting on how He came the first time, incarnate in the virginal womb of Mary and born in a manger of Bethlehem. Pope Francis We also prepare ourselves for the return of Christ by reflecting on how the first generation of Christians awaited His return. We see in the letters of St. Paul that they expected Jesus to return any day. This gave them a missionary zeal, a clear purpose and direction to their lives, as well as a hopeful expectation. We know the early Christians would literally look East, to the rising sun, with a real hope that, perhaps, this would be the day they would see the risen Son return. The became a meeting place where Christians would collectively await the return of the King upon the clouds. As such, the posture and position of everyone at was facing East, or ad orientem. To honor this part of our history and experience the richness of this posture, we as a parish family will celebrate ad orientem on December 16, the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. You don t need to do anything different; the only person changing posture is the priest. We would do well to keep in mind the reason for this change in body language and how it communicates our communal expectant hope for the advent of Jesus. Hopefully, experiencing in this manner will instill in each of us a spirit of watchfulness and longing. May we keep our gaze fixed East and pray all the more fervently, Come, Lord Jesus! Fr. He is talking not about the baby in the manger, but about the adult Christ soon to begin His public ministry. "What is the meaning of 'Prepare the way of the Lord'?
