Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway RITE OF SENDING & ELECTION Since last fall, 18 men and women have been participating in our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) classes to explore entering into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Today, March 10, at our 10 a.m., they mark their Rite of Sending and Election, a pivotal step in the conversion process. Every member of this parish is a part of their spiritual journey. In the Rite of Sending, our catechumens (unbaptized individuals who are preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist at Easter) are presented to the congregation. The catechumens publicly declare their desire to become Catholic and their names will be written in our Book of the Elect, formally attesting that they intend to be received into full communion with the Church. Our candidates (those who are already baptized as Catholics or in another Christian faith preparing for full communion with the Catholic Church) will indicate their readiness today to receive the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil. Following the 10 a.m., our catechumens (who are now known as the elect ) and candidates will leave the Basilica to be presented to Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge in the Rite of Election at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington. They will join hundreds of other individuals from RCIA programs in parishes throughout the Diocese in a very moving ceremony people from through the diocese, from all walks of life, formally committing themselves to Christ and His Church. Please keep these men and women in your prayers, asking Our Lord to continue showing them His mercy, guidance and love so they may always conform their lives to Christ s. MARK YOUR CALENDAR March 17 Come Walk with Me, an evening of music, reflection and healing with Irish Tenor Mark Forrest. 7 p.m. in the Basilica, followed by a reception in the Lyceum. March 19 in the Basilica at 7 p.m. to commemorate the installation of Pope Francis. March 23 Women s Lenten Morning of Reflection sponsored by the Catholic Daughters. Please find more details on these events elsewhere in this bulletin and on our website.

RSVP to soren.johnson@arlingtondiocese.org or Virginia Bishops Statement on U.S. Senate s Failure To Pass Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act Joint statement issued on February 25 by Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, and Most Reverend Barry C. Knestout, Bishop of Richmond We are deeply dismayed and astounded that the U.S. Senate has failed to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S. 311). It is a matter of common sense and basic human decency to require, as S. 311 would have, that any health care practitioner present when a child is born alive following an abortion give the same degree of care to preserve the life and health of the child as would be given to any other newborn. That this bill did not pass unanimously let alone pass at all is appalling and beyond comprehension. We are dismayed and outraged that Virginia s U.S. Senators Warner and Kaine voted against this critical lifesaving legislation. We urge the Senate to reconsider its decision as soon as possible. [NOTE: Resources for contacting Congress to urge protection of the lives of unborn children and children already born can be found at UPCOMING SECOND COLLECTIONS March 17 Easter Flowers March 31 Catholic Relief Services SCOTT HAHN TO SPEAK HERE AT THE BASILICA The Basilica of St. Mary will host best-selling author and renowned biblical scholar Scott Hahn on Saturday, May 4. 8 The Basilica of St. Mary + First Sunday in Lent + March 10, Page Eight FELLOWSHIP & SERVING OTHERS SUPPORTING CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND The weekend of March 16 and 17, there will be a display of beautiful, handmade, olivewood carvings from the Holy Land outside in front of the Basilica following our es. The carvings are made by the Christians of Bethlehem who use them as their source of income. These brothers and sisters of ours are enduring great hardships due to the volatile situation in their home country. Christians used to be more than 37 percent of the population in the Holy Land. Today, they are less than 1 percent because of the ongoing unrest. As Christians of faith, it is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem. YOU can support them by purchasing their beautiful carvings. Thank you!
