Pope Saint John XXIII ( ) served as Pope from October 28, 1958, until his death in He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on April 27, 2014, alongside Pope St. John Paul II. We celebrate his feast day on October 11, the day of the first session of the Second Vatican Council. This is understandable, since he was the one who had the idea for it and had convened it. John XXIII today is affectionately known as the "Good Pope" or, in Italian, il Papa buono. St. Teresa of Ávila, also called St. Teresa of Jesus ( ), was a Carmelite nun, author and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer in the Carmelite Order of her time. The movement she initiated, later joined by St. John of the Cross, eventually led to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1622, 40 years after her death, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV, and on September 27, 1970 was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. Her books include her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus, and her seminal work, The Interior Castle. Pope St. John XXIII and St. Teresa of Avila, pray for us! Monday, October 10 Columbus Day REMINDER: Our parish office will be closed on Monday. There will be only one Mass that day at 9 a.m.

4 Page Four October 9, 2016 WORSHIP, PRAYER & FELLLOWSHIP MERCY MASSES Our Masses this weekend (October 8/9) are our monthly Mercy Masses. To submit a prayer request, write it on one of the white cards in the pews and place it in the basket during the second collection time. Prayer intentions will be placed at the altar and prayed over during the coming weeks. If your prayer is answered, please let us know ( ) so we can let others know how you ve been touched by God s great mercy. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT We are fortunate here at St. Mary to have the opportunity each week to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. When we set aside time for Jesus, we not only gain the obvious benefits from "spiritual communion" with Him, but we become increasingly aware of His presence in the busier moments of our lives when there is so much to preoccupy us. This communion with Him carries over into life's most demanding periods. Visiting Our Lord in Adoration is also the perfect time to express our gratitude for all He has blessed us with. He is waiting for us to visit!! Think of spending just one hour per week with Our Lord. Adoration is on Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., concluding with a Holy Hour. Sign up sheets for a new session running from November through January will be available in the rear of the church. For additional information contact Mary Stier at or mlpstier@gmail.com. SENIORS TRIP October 26 The Saints Ann and Joachim Senior group will be going to the St. John Paul II National Shrine and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday, October 26. This will be an opportunity to see the special St. Thomas More exhibit (God's Servant First, The Life and Legacy of Thomas More) and attend Mass in the beautiful chapel at the St. John Paul II Shrine. Next we will go to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for an opportunity to pass through the Door of Mercy and receive a plenary indulgence, have lunch and an escorted tour. Fr. Andrew Haissig will be our spiritual leader. Meet at the Lyceum at 9:45 a.m. Bus is $10 members and $15 nonmembers. Open to nonmembers on a space availability basis. For further information or to reserve a spot, contact Barbara Juszczyk at or Sheila Jurinski at JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY The wound in My heart is the fountain of unfathomable mercy. 8 September 28 November 6, 2016 Christians throughout Northern Virginia are encouraged to take part in the 40 Days for Life campaign to save unborn babies from the tragedy of abortion and save their mothers from a lifetime of regret. This campaign is an international effort to access God s power through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigils. Everyone can help in some way. The campaign includes three components:1) Prayer and fasting (as the Lord leads) for an end to abortion; 2) a peaceful prayer vigil at a site where abortions are occurring; and 3) educational outreach to the community. The focus of the Alexandria campaign is a 40-day prayer vigil outside the abortion facility at 101 South Whiting Street (Landmark Towers building). This is a peaceful and educational presence designed to save lives and raise awareness about alternatives to abortion. Participants are encouraged to spend time standing for life in prayerful witness at this site. For more information or to volunteer, please contact: Sara Dina at or SaraDina4Life@verizon.net Or visit our website at:
