It is his hope that the release of these names will bring a continued and deepened healing for all victims of abuse. Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway LENT: PREPARING FOR THE JOURNEY The Lenten Season is nearly here, beginning next week on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Now is the time for each of us to think about how we might enter more fully into the solemn season of Lent. A good approach is to focus on four traditional spiritual practices of the Catholic Church: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving and Study. Prayer. Spend more time in intimate conversation with God. Try to attend daily Mass (the ultimate prayer of the Church), when possible. Join fellow parishioners in praying the Stations of the Cross in the Basilica at 7 p.m. on Fridays during Lent, beginning on Friday, March 8. If you and your family are not already doing so, start your day together with a brief morning prayer and end it with an evening or night prayer. (Since prayer is at the very heart of our ongoing and personal relationship with Our Lord, we ll look more deeply into that subject here in coming weeks.) Fasting. Do without some pleasurable things like certain foods or forms of entertainment. During Lent, we fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, give up meat on Fridays and are encouraged to give up something we enjoy. To help us with our meatless Fridays, please come to our Lenten Soup Suppers at 6 p.m. in the Lyceum Auditorium on Fridays during Lent (except March 29), also beginning on Friday, March 8. Almsgiving. Give a bit more of your time, talent and treasure to those in need. Reaching out to others and helping them without question is way to share the gifts God has given us. One way to do that is by participating, to the extent you can, in the 2019 Annual Bishop s Lenten Appeal. You can donate to the BLA online at stmaryoldtown.org/bla2019. Study. Spend a few minutes each day reading Holy Scripture or a good spiritual book or article.
