Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway CHRIST COMING IN MAJESTY The first two weeks of Advent, we reflected here on Christ s coming in History and in Mystery. Today, the Third Sunday in Advent or Gaudete Sunday, we meditate on His coming in Majesty at the end of time, when He will display His kingship over all creation, nations and peoples. Christ s disciples (that s you and me!) know not the day or the hour of His return, so it is good to seek God s mercy now, especially in the Sacrament of Penance. He invites us to perfection and holiness and provides us the remedy when we fail. Please take advantage of the extra confession times we offer this week. COMING EVENTS! Christmas Tree Lighting. We inaugurate a new St. Mary parish tradition this weekend the solemn blessing and lighting of our Christmas Tree, in solidarity with the lighting of the Vatican Christmas Tree in St. Peter s Square. Join us in the courtyard at 314 Duke Street after the 5 p.m. Masses this Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17. Hot chocolate and treats will be served. Our exciting Advent Series concludes this week with a presentation entitled Luther & Calvin: Reformers or Revolutionaries? What s the real story? Steve Weidenkopf, lecturer of Church history at the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College, will explore the topic at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, in the Lyceum. TWO MASSES! This year, since Christmas falls on a Monday, the 4th Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve. We have the obligation to attend Mass on both Sunday and Christmas, a Holy Day of Obligation. That is, two separate Masses for the two days. We don t want you losing that halo from your most recent confession! How? You might attend the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday, December 23, to meet your Sunday Obligation, and then a Christmas Eve Mass for your Christmas Holy Day Obligation. Or attend a regular Sunday Mass 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9 a.m. (school), 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. on December 24 and then another Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, December 25. Or attend two Masses on Sunday, one in the morning and one in the evening. Please note: Attending the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday does not fulfill the Sunday Mass Obligation since that Mass is the first Mass on Christmas Eve.
