Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway WELCOME TO FATHER DUFRESNE We are blessed to welcome Fr. David A. Dufresne as our new Parochial Vicar at this Sunday s Masses. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde in 2014 and comes to us from St. Leo the Great parish in Fairfax. I ll let Fr. Dufresne introduce himself on page 8 of this bulletin. (Thank you to our Catholic Daughters and Knights of Columbus for the beautiful reception for Fr. Barnes!) TRUE FREEDOM As our nation celebrates Independence Day this coming Wednesday, it is important to recall that freedom should never be confused with licentiousness or doing whatever we feel like doing. That s not freedom but, rather, opens us to enslavement to sloth, to food, to drink, to drugs, to sex. It is in the truth that we are free. The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32) The free person is the one who freely embraces God s plan as revealed through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. With this in mind, we can see that the Ten Commandments and teachings of the Church don t restrict our freedom but rather liberate us from the often-disordered passions of our fallen human nature. By becoming more like Christ, we become more deeply the persons God created us to be. FR. PACHOLCZYK PREACHING TODAY I hope you were able to join us yesterday for our first-ever Sts. Peter and Paul Conference with Fr. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D., of the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia. His presentation on Sex, Love and Gender: 50 Years After Humane Vitae provided us with a lot of food for thought. We are honored to have him here with us to preach at our Masses this weekend as well. ST. THOMAS, APOSTLE JULY 3 Our Christian faith is built upon the Apostles who saw the risen Lord and proclaimed His resurrection. Among the Twelve, only Thomas doubted Jesus' resurrection when first told about it. That skepticism later gave way to great faith when Thomas saw the risen Lord s wounded body and confessed: My Lord and my God! May we, too, receive the risen Jesus Christ into our lives and always be ready to proclaim Him to the world through our every word and action. Follow Father Hathaway on to receive daily quotes on Scripture and the Saints!

EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF THE DIVINE MERCY Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul. The purpose is to spread the truth of the Real Presence in the Eucharist and live the Divine Mercy message based on a deeper trust in God, a greater ability to forgive and be merciful to others. 8 The Basilica of St. Mary + July 1, The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time + Page Eight AROUND OUR PARISH & BEYOND FROM OUR NEW PAROCHIAL VICAR FR. DAVID A. DUFRESNE I love Jesus Christ. I love being His priest and beginning my new priestly assignment at the Basilica of St. Mary. But if you were to talk to me 20 years ago, it would have been quite a different story. I am living proof that the Lord can transform the hardest of hearts and bring any prodigal to Himself. Often, the best way to see His Providence at work is to look back. I grew between two worlds in Denver. My dad left mom and me when I was four years old. My mom unexpectedly found herself having to scramble to find work and put food on the table. While my dad, whom I saw once a month or so, lived a very different life. For example, Thanksgivings with Mom would include the two of us playing cards and eating potato chips (as a treat), while with Dad I would wear a suit and tie to go his parents house where there would be a marble dining room table seated for 20 and five forks at each setting even at the kids table. His parents were the only grandparents I had. My beloved Papa Dave gave me much more than my namesake: a love for the outdoors, hunting and fly-fishing. In many ways, Papa Dave was the best father figure in my life. While I took a break to be a dirt bag for several years, many of his lessons and passions stick with me today. As I approached adolescence, I ached for a dad and a sense of family. To make a long story short, by the time I was 15 years old I had been expelled from high school, joined a gang and ceased to go home to my Mom. Twenty years ago, you would have been talking to this street punk who did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. The search for belonging and acceptance wasn t found in a group of people who were fundamentally selfish and angry. At the age of 19, I was desperate and I started to turn around toward God. That small opening was all He needed to transform me. I was baptized in the Catholic Church at the age of 20. In the abundant grace of baptism, I am convinced, I received the grace of my vocation. So now I can look back on the dark ages, as my Mother calls them, and see God s hand. God was able to use that time in my life to help me understand those who have wounds from their fathers and who are looking for happiness in all the wrong places. While I don t wish those dark times upon anyone, I am grateful because they have made me who I am. I mention all of that about my past mostly because I am looking forward to my future at the Basilica. Sometimes it can be hard to see how God is acting in our lives in the present moment. It can be consolation to reflect on our lives and to see how active He has always been. I don t need to tell you that you have a great Pastor and I look forward to being his vicar to help implement his vision. I look forward to sharing more of my story with you in the years to come and, of course, to hearing yours.
