Thursday, September 27 is the Memorial of St. Vincent de Paul ( ), a French priest known for his deep devotion to serving the poor and the abandoned. Not surprisingly, St. Vincent is the patron of charities, hospitals and prisoners. Here at the Basilica, we can follow the example of this compassionate saint through our St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP). Inspired by the Gospel values, this lay organization offers person-toperson service to those in need. Your contributions to our Poor Box go directly to help fund that work, which is our primary parish outreach to the needy. I encourage you to support and even join in the work of the SVdP. They are hosting an open house and information session in our Lyceum Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, Please consider attending and getting involved. (Read more about our SVdP and the September 26 event on page 8 of this bulletin and via our new parish podcast details on page 5.) In addition to supporting SVdP, we tithe 10 percent of every dollar you donate to St. Mary s to spiritual and corporal works of mercy, including groups like Christ House, Divine Mercy Care, ALIVE!, Tepayac Center, Catholic Distance University and Christendom College, among others. HUNGER FREE ALEXANDRIA On a related note, have you been approached by someone outside the Basilica, or elsewhere in Old Town Alexandria, asking for money for food? How should we respond? Fortunately, our city has a wide range of programs that make free food and meals available every day of the week. Other programs provide groceries for families and individuals via food pantries and even home delivery services to seniors and others. More information can be found on flyers at the back of the Basilica. A comprehensive list of food/meal resources in our area, compiled by Hunger Free Alexandria, is available at St. Mary volunteers are involved in many of the programs listed there. As someone involved in this work told me recently, No individual or family should go hungry in Alexandria! Let s serve those in need by encouraging them to utilize the resources readily available to them in our Alexandria area. Follow Father Hathaway on to receive daily quotes on Scripture and the Saints!

8 The Basilica of St. Mary + September 23, The Twenty-fifth + Page Eight FELLOWSHIP & SERVING OTHERS ALL Are Invited to the Basilica of St. Mary St. Vincent de Paul Society Open House on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m. St. Mary Lyceum Auditorium, 313 Duke Street St. Vincent de Paul was called the Apostle of Charity for his service to the poor. At the Basilica of St. Mary, his inspirational work continues every day. Unique among all charity providers in Alexandria, we follow the words of Our Lord to go out in twos, visiting the needy in their homes, listening to their concerns, providing them with respect, dignity and hope as we seek to address their corporal and spiritual needs. Over the years, our volunteers have touched the lives of many families and individuals who live so close to us. Our database has more than 4,200 family names, representing perhaps as many as 10,000 neighbors who have benefitted from your generosity. In the last 12 months, we have provided $118, 360 of assistance to keep families in their homes, their electricity on, their water flowing, their children fed and many other services. You will hear our volunteers talk about our neighbors who have been helped during the past year, including via our Sustainment Fund that aids a family in reaching self-sufficiency. Without your support, none of this would have been possible. As we Vincentians celebrate the feast day of St. Vincent on September 27, when you are in the Basilica, say a prayer at the stained glass window of St. Vincent. Hand-crafted by artisans from New York trained in Munich, Germany, this precious work of sacred art reminds us of the mission Christ has called all of us to carry out. Pray for our needy neighbors, pray for our work. Consider joining us as a volunteer or supporting us through your donations. And pick up a prayer card in front of the window. For more information, contact Jim Larocco at rocca-rocco@usa.net.
