May they be inspired by Him, encouraged by our families and faith community here at St. Mary, and respond generously to God s gift of a vocation. Speaking about vocations at our Masses this weekend is someone who has done just that, seminarian Robert Wagner. He comes to us from Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. He describes himself as a second career seminarian because he was a practicing dentist before entering the seminary. We look forward to hearing more about his discernment process and offer our prayers as he continues his journey. A Prayer for Vocations Lord Jesus, we ask you to send us more servants. Choose from our parish, homes, schools and colleges an abundant harvest of apostles for your Kingdom: priests, sisters, brothers and deacons. We pray those you call may always be aware of the dignity and need of their vocation. Mary Immaculate, Mother of the Church, help those the Lord calls to respond with a joyful "yes" as you did at the Annunciation. Amen. WELCOME TO OUR NEW ASSISTANT DRE Ryan Farrell has joined our parish staff as Assistant Director of Religious Education. Ryan graduated from the Augustine Institute in Denver, where he received a master s in theology in May. He worked in a variety of roles there, most recently as the Audio Content Manager. He recently returned to live near his family in Annandale. Ryan holds a B.B.A. in Management from James Madison University and graduated from Falls Church High School. He currently serves as a volunteer youth assistant at his home parish, St. Ambrose. We are blessed to have Ryan on our St. Mary Team! NORA HAMERMAN ON DUTCH CATHOLIC ART The final installment in our outstanding Fall Series takes place Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in Christ Child Hall at St. Mary School, 400 Green Street. There s plenty of parking in the school yard! Noted Catholic historian Nora Hamerman will speak about The History of Dutch Catholic Art. THE LEGION of MARY What is it? It s Our Lady s Army, composed of more than two million active members worldwide. NEWS UPDATE FROM ST. MARY SCHOOL The first quarter of the school year has come to a close. October was the month of the rosary. The school gathered together in the rosary garden and prayed the rosary with Father Hathaway and Father Barnes. Our National Junior Honor Society chapter, in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus, conducted a coat drive and through the generosity of our school families we donated over 150 coats to help the Alexandria community this winter. The Student Council held a fundraiser on October 6 to help Catholic schools impacted by the recent hurricanes. They raised over $1,300 dollars. On October 14, our families gathered on the blacktop for Family Movie night, enjoying popcorn in the spirit of community building and entertainment! We held our annual Walk for the Homeless on October 20. Students in grades 1-8 created posters and walked through the neighboring streets to pray for the homeless. The students also donated a total of over $2,000 for Christ House for this important ministry. Our Food Bus program continues to be a big success with more than 200 pounds of food donated since the beginning of school! For this project, students are donating any unopened lunch items to our Food Bus and those items are taken to Christ House weekly. Thank you to our students and parents for your generosity and compassion. As you can see we are off to a great start. We look forward to our Prospective Family Open House at 8:30 a.m. on November 16. Details can be found at What does it do? It makes its members better Catholics through prayer and service (including doorto-door evangelization, welcoming new parishioners and visiting the imprisoned). How does it work? Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and discussion; in pairs they do a couple hours of work each week under the guidance of their spiritual director, Fr. Andrew. Who can belong to Mary s Army? Nobody for the first three months. That gives you a chance to see how it works with your work and family life. How do I start? If you are interested in joining the Legion here at St. Mary or need more information, please contact Fr. Andrew at or frandrew@stmaryoldtown.org. Lending a helping hand. Many thanks to Knights of Columbus Bill Beach, Keith Mathews, Larry Clark, Jack Cooper, Bob Huff, Fred Flowers, Preston Daniel and Frank Rogg for assembling 79 desks at St. Mary School for our second graders.
