Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway BAPTISM OF OUR LORD Today, January 13, is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Christ s baptism is symbolic of what happened at our own baptism. At Christ's baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our baptism, the Trinity made its home in our soul. At His baptism, Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our baptism, we become the adopted sons and daughters of God. At Christ's baptism, the heavens were opened; at our baptism, heaven was opened to us. At His baptism, Jesus prayed; after our baptism, we must pray to avoid actual sin. What is your baptism date? The name of the priest or deacon who baptized you? It s a date to celebrate since it s the day you became a child of God! ORDINARY TIME BEGINS Tomorrow, January 14, we enter Ordinary Time in the liturgical cycle of the Church. You ll notice the difference as the priests will now wear green vestments. Ordinary Time is the period outside of other major seasons (Lent/Easter and Advent/Christmas). In Latin, it is called Tempus Per Annum or "time throughout the year". Our Sunday Gospel readings during Ordinary Time in 2019 will focus on the life of Christ as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. You may want to read and reflect on Luke on your own in the coming months. Ordinary Time is far from unimportant or uninteresting. Finding Christ in our daily lives helps make the ordinary extraordinary, reminding us to keep a supernatural view of the world, people and events around us. MARCH FOR LIFE 2019 The 46th annual March for Life, the world s largest pro-life event, will be held Friday, January 18, in Washington, DC. This year s theme is Unique from Day One there are no two people just alike! I invite and encourage you to join me and other St. Mary parishioners at the March as we provide faithful witness to the dignity and value of all human life, from conception to natural death. Details are found on this page and on our website. ST. JEAN MARIE VIANNEY RELIC HERE On January 15 and 16 an important relic of our Catholic faith, the incorrupt heart of St. Jean Marie Vianney, will visit the Basilica of St. Mary as part of a nationwide pilgrimage. We are truly honored to be the only site in the Arlington Diocese chosen to participate in this visit. The relic will be available for public veneration in the Basilica on both days and other events are scheduled. On the evening of Wednesday, January 16, Fr. Patrice Chocholski, Rector of the Shrine of St. Jean Marie Vianney in Ars, France, will speak to us about this great saint and patron of parish priests. See page 5 and our website for more details.

8 The Basilica of St. Mary + The Baptism of the Lord + January 13, Page Eight FELLOWSHIP & SERVING OTHERS UPCOMING SECOND COLLECTION A Second Collection the weekend of January 26/27 will be for the Church in Latin America. From Your St. Vincent de Paul Society Mary s Miracles (continued). We were contacted by a parishioner whose mom had recently passed and left furniture that might be welcomed by a needy family. We had just visited such a family, and the move was orchestrated quickly and smoothly. The kids, who had been sleeping on the floor, were so excited that they had a real bed to sleep on, the mom delighted to have her bare rooms transformed into a home. The donor remarked after the move was made that her mom must be smiling as she looked down from heaven. We volunteers see the hand of Mary every day in our work as families who are blessed with prosperity help our needy neighbors find hope where there appears to be none. Help us to be instruments of Our Lady in our community. Jim Larocco, rocca-rocco@usa.
