Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway HAIL & FAREWELL! Part of priestly life in the Catholic Church is accepting new assignments that assist the Bishop in the smooth functioning of the Diocese. While bittersweet, these changes also prepare parochial vicars for future pastorates by providing them different models of parish organization, administration and community life. With this in mind, Father Barnes has received a new assignment from the Bishop that begins June 28th. All are invited to a farewell reception on Sunday June 24th from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Lyceum, to thank Fr. Barnes for his service to our parish and to wish him well in his new assignment. While we are sad to see Fr. Barnes leave us to St. Theresa Catholic Parish and School in Ashburn, we are grateful for his apostolic work here at the Basilica of St. Mary and know he will bring his many priestly gifts to that parish community. We are excited to have Fr. David Dufresne join us from St. Leo the Great Catholic Parish and School in Fairfax, also on June 28th! We are also privileged to have one of the newly ordained deacons, Rev. Mr. James F. Waalkes, assigned to our parish for the coming year. He may look familiar to you as he was assigned here as a seminarian during this past year. He was ordained to the transitional diaconate last Saturday, June 2nd, at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More and, God willing, to the priesthood in He will begin his assignment here on June 11th. Please keep these men and all our priests beginning new assignments in your prayers! PRAY FOR THE UNBORN OF IRELAND Sadly, on May 25, a majority of the voters in Ireland approved removing the right to life of the unborn from the country s constitution, paving the way for abortion on demand up to 12 weeks into a woman's pregnancy. Bishops in Ireland have called the vote regrettable and chilling. As one pro-life leader said, Abortion was wrong yesterday. It remains wrong today. The constitution has changed, but the facts have not. Ireland and its unborn babies indeed, unborn babies threatened by abortion everywhere need our continued prayers. St. Patrick and St. Bridget, pray for them. Follow Father Hathaway on to receive daily quotes on Scripture and the Saints!
