Let us pray for each other. Father Edward C. Hathaway Merry Christmas! The great feast of Christmas that begins December 25 continues through the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on January 9 in this coming New Year. It is certainly appropriate to keep your Christmas tree and Nativity set up, send cards and entertain during this joyous season! Remember, the 12 days of Christmas of the popular carol encompass the 12 days from Christmas until January 6, the traditional date of the Epiphany, moved in the United States to the Sunday following New Year s Day. Speaking of The Twelve Days of Christmas, according to the Handbook of Catholic Sacraments, this carol is a catechism song used centuries ago in England. The hidden meanings of the song s gifts helped children remember their faith. Instead of referring to an earthly suitor, the True Love in the song refers to God Himself. The Partridge in a Pear Tree is Jesus Christ on the Cross. Other symbols are: Two Turtle Doves the Old and New Testaments; Three French Hens faith, hope and charity; Four Calling Birds the four Gospels; Five Golden Rings the first five books of the Old Testament; Six Geese A-laying the six days of Creation; Seven Swans A-swimming seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; Eight Maids A-milking the eight Beatitudes; Nine Ladies Dancing nine fruits of the Holy Spirit; Ten Lords A-leaping the Ten Commandments; Eleven Pipers Piping the eleven faithful disciples; and, Twelve Drummers Drumming the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed. On Friday, December 30, we will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (see page 7 for A Family Prayer ). Then, on Sunday, January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God (see page 2 for Mass times), a Holy Day of Obligation. The family indeed, each of us is called to holiness and so must be an image not only of the Holy Family of Nazareth but also of the Holy Trinity. May Our Lady and St. Joseph, earthly parents of Jesus Christ, intercede for our families to increasingly become the sign of hope for a culture of love in the New Year. On behalf of Fr. Barnes, Fr. Andrew, Fr. Bresnahan, Fr. Kevin and our parish staff, I wish you and your families a most blessed Christmas season and a New Year filled with the joy and peace of Christ. God bless you!

7 December 25, 2016 The Nativity of the Lord Page Seven Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 30 Family life is rooted in the unconditional love of God as witnessed by the Holy Family. The Family Prayer Our Father, we thank You for Your love and Your many blessings, especially for the precious gift of each other. Help us to show our gratitude by loving each other as You love us. Make us understanding and patient with one another, quick to admit our failings and ask forgiveness, generous in sharing the joy and strength we can give each other. Father, give our family lively faith and the courage to share it with those around us. Direct us to the state in life You plan for each of us, and help us to use Your gifts to serve You. We entrust our family to Your fatherly care. Preserve us from the corruption of the modern world and help us draw closer daily to You and to each other, until we come to share with You the joys of heaven. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help us to be a holy family. Amen. This prayer may be recited after dinner every night. A family who did, is grateful for the vocations their children found, including two who are priests in Sioux Falls, ND.

8 Page Eight December 25, 2016 The Nativity of the Lord SERVICE, EDUCATION & EVANGELIZATION A CALL TO SERVICE AS A VINCENTIAN As you prepare your New Year s Resolutions, keep in mind Pope Francis appeal for all Catholics to serve the needy. The St. Vincent de Paul Society helps hundreds of families who are our neighbors. Examples: A single mom struggling to put food on the table and a warm, loving home for her severely autistic 17-year-old daughter. We made a very special Christmas for her by paying forward three months rent. A father left with four very active boys and no home. We helped them find a shelter, then took the boys to buy them new athletic shoes. A man at the Carpenter s Shelter who had a job opportunity waiting but needed his driver s license restored. We took him to the DMV, went straight to the manager, who was so deeply touched by our act of charity that he personally took care of it with no wait. Acts of charity are indeed infectious, making the world a better place. Spread mercy, care and kindness as you help our neighbors meet their needs. Jim Larocco at rocca-rocco@usa.net. Better yet, join us as we meet in the Lyceum on Tuesday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. This is one resolution you will keep, and one that will bring you and others great joy. CHRIST HOUSE DINNER St. Mary volunteers will be providing dinner and serving at Christ House on Tuesday, January 31. A sign up book will be placed at the back of the church for food items needed.
