5 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, November 25, 2018 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33b-37 Stories of kings and queens are often relegated to fairy tales or medieval gallantry. Sometimes, of course, we see modern royalty in the media, and many might remember the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana decades ago, and more recently their son Prince William s wed- ding to Kate M i d d l e t o n. But modern royals tend to be figureheads rather than political heads of state. So it can seem a bit odd to cele- brate Christ the King. He is certainly more than a figurehead. Of course, the image of king is deeply rooted in the ancient world, and not limited to biblical texts. Oftentimes in an- tiquity the king, or su- preme ruler, approached the status of the divine. For example, Julius Caesar s clan was named for Julius, the son of Aeneas (the prince of Troy), who was said to be the son of the goddess Venus. Julius Caesar received honors of divinity in his lifetime, and after he was assassinated the Roman Senate officially declared him divine. Centuries before, the kings of Judah and Israel were sometimes called divine, or sons of God. The biblical authors also applied the title of King to God, as Yahweh was the great God, / the great king over all gods (Ps 95:3, NABRE). By the time Jesus was on the scene, the Roman occupation of Judea led the people to long for their own king, to establish the kingdom as independent once again. It s no surprise that the Romans, always on the lookout for those who might attempt insurrection, crucified Jesus as King of the Jews. The mocking, derisive sign became something the early Christians did not shy away from, but proclaimed. In essence, the early Christians said, Jesus was in fact king, but he was king in a way unforeseen. The gospel reading for today brings us into the scene between Jesus and Pilate. Of course, we know how it will end, ultimately with the crucifixion and the antagonizing sign proclaiming Jesus, King. But here in the midst of the conversation we hear eternal questions that cause us to consider, What is truth? Jesus makes a straightforward claim, that he is king, and he has been sent to testify to the truth. He doesn t see the incarnation of truth, the King of Kings, standing before his very eyes. And in Pilate s blindness, he will put to death Jesus as King of the Jews. So the early Christians, and even us today, continue to proclaim Jesus as King. He is no mere figurehead. Instead, he shares the title with Yahweh, great king over the gods. What Pilate said in mockery was utterly true. Jesus Christ is King. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... Andrew the Apostle, also known as Saint Andrew and referred to in the Orthodox tradition as the First-Called, was a Christian Apostle and the brother of Saint Peter. Saint Andrew was born according to the Christian tradition in 6 BC in Galilee. The New Testament states that Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter, born in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. In the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 4:18 22) and in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 1:16 20) Simon Peter and Andrew were both called together to become disciples of Jesus and "fishers of men". These narratives record that Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, observed Simon and Andrew fishing, and called them to discipleship. In contrast, the Gospel of John (John 1:35 42) states that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, whose testimony first led him, and another unnamed disciple of John the Baptist, to follow Jesus. Andrew at once recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and hastened to introduce him to his brother. Thenceforth, the two brothers were disciples of Christ. Subsequently, in the Gospels, Andrew is referred to as being present on some important occasions as one of the disciples more closely attached to Jesus. Andrew told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes (John 6:8), and when Philip wanted to tell Jesus about certain Greeks seeking Him, he told Andrew first (John 12:20 22). Andrew was present at the Last Supper and Andrew was one of the four disciples who came to Jesus on the Mount of Olives to ask about the signs of Jesus' return at the "end of the age". Early church legends recount his missionary activity in the area around the Black Sea and the Dnieper river as far as Kiev. Hence, he became a patron saint of Ukraine, Romania, and Russia. According to tradition, he founded the See of Byzantium (later Constantinople and Istanbul) in AD 38, preached in Thrace, and his presence in Byzantium is also mentioned in the apocryphal Acts of Andrew. Andrew is said to have been martyred by crucifixion at the city of Patras (Patræ) in Achaea. Early texts describe Andrew as bound, not nailed, to a Latin cross of the kind on which Jesus is said to have been crucified; yet a tradition developed that Andrew had been crucified on a cross of the form called crux decussata (X-shaped cross, or "saltire"), now commonly known as a "Saint Andrew's Cross" supposedly at his own request, as he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus had been. He is iconographically represented with an X-shaped cross (like that depicted on the Scottish flag). Many Catholics participate in an Advent devotion known as the Saint Andrew Novena, or the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena, in which a specific prayer is recited 15 times a day from his feast day on November 30 until Christmas. Hail and Blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

6 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Monday, November 26, 2018 Revelation 14:1-3, 4b-5; Luke 21:1-4 Strolling through the crooked, crowded, exciting streets of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, you ll see vendors hawking every imaginable treasure. Spices from the Orient, silks of India, beauty products made with Dead Sea salts, prayer shawls of every description. You can buy almost anything there, including the widow s mite, according to the sandwich board in front of an archeologically minded coin shop. Whether or not the coins are authentic to the time of Jesus, the one thing you can never acquire from any shop is the spirit of generosity that humble woman in the gospel story demonstrated. Is your generosity big enough to impress Jesus? Tuesday, November 27, 2018 Revelation 14:14-19; Luke 21:5-11 At the close of each church year, Catholics get a little apocalyptic in their focus. While it s in the fine print of mortality that someday we ll face the final hour of this life, it s a thought we keep under wraps most of the time. Yet the hour of the Reaper is coming: How prepared are you to be reaped? The church invites you to practice the daily examination of conscience to consider the harvest of each day, both the chaff and the grain of your efforts. (Search on examination of conscience online for some options.) Consider today: What fruits have you gathered to present to the Lord? Wednesday, November 28, 2018 Revelation 15:1-4; Luke 21:12-19 As we approach Advent, we already begin to hear talk of preparing for Christ s coming making ourselves ready. And of course we have gospels full of warnings to Be prepared, Keep vigil, Bring oil for your lamps, You know not the day nor the hour. But when it comes to defending our faith at the end times, Jesus tells us to not prepare our testimony in advance. Huh? Apparently we re to get busy putting our faith into action now, and when the time comes for putting it into words, we can rely on the wisdom of the Spirit to help us out. Thursday, November 29, 2018 Revelation 18:1-2, 21-23; 19:1-3, 9a; Luke 21:20-28 Each new generation has its heralds of doom reading signs in every calamity that the end is near. But rest assured, the endtimes are not our concern. Our commission is to stand amid the chaos and give birth to a dancing star, to quote Nietzsche at his poetical best. Our choice is always to embrace life a gift freely given to us by One who loves us. So ignore those who speak the language of scarcity and gloom. They want you to live small, fear-filled lives. Stand erect, Jesus says. Drink from my cup. Do this, and you will be satisfied and most surely saved. Friday, November 30, 2018 Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle Romans 10:9-18; Matthew 4:18-22 In the gospels, Andrew is portrayed as a simple fisherman who brought others to Jesus. He brought forward the boy with the five loaves and two fishes. He brought his brother Simon the news, We have found the Messiah. In Jerusalem, he introduced some Greek men who wanted to meet Jesus and speak to him. Later, he was a missionary said to have traveled widely before being martyred on a cross in the shape of an X. Because of the belief that Andrew preached in Scotland, the Scottish put his cross on their flag. While few of us will be remembered on national flags, all of us can be remembered as people who did our best to introduce others to the healing message of Jesus. Saturday, December 1, 2018 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Revelation 22:1-7; Luke 21:34-36 People throw parties when it s time to celebrate. But grief and loss are private places we often go alone. How comforting to know that Mary our Mother went all of those places ahead of us and is waiting there to enfold us in mercy and consolation! Pick up a rosary today and pray the Sorrowful Mysteries for those who are suffering alone and unseen: in places of humiliation and condemnation, in sickness and disability, in mourning and loneliness, and especially at the hour of death.
