Statues in the Church In viewing some of the pictures of the Sanctuary of the Church from years past, statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Thérèse held a prominent place in addition to Our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. I am not sure of the reason why they were removed over the years, however, we know as Catholics that they help us to recall what we are meant to be, namely Saints in glory. With this insight in mind, I would like to return to this timeless teaching of the Church, and once again have some statues present in the Sanctuary and other locations. If anyone feels moved to offer donations for the purpose of helping in this effort, please kindly place an offering in an envelope marked Statues, and place in the collection basket any Sunday. Thank you. 5 Third Fourth Sunday of of Easter - - April 15, 22, 2018 aint Andrew Saint the Andrew Apostle the Parish Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, April 22, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Easter Acts 4:8-12; 1 John 3:1-2; John 10:11-18 In the early church, before Jesus was depicted as suffering and dying on the cross, he was depicted as the Good Shepherd. This image was central to early Christian identity. We see paintings and even statues of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The cross seems to have been too painful or too inappropriate to be an effective way to portray Jesus. The Good Shepherd conveyed the Christian message much more clearly. Today we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday as we read this famous gospel story from John. We are no longer in the realm of resurrection appearance stories, but now we have entered the world of Jesus I AM parabolic discourse. In John, Jesus doesn t preach in parables, The kingdom of God is like...a shepherd, a gate, a vineyard, etc. Instead, we hear Jesus say, I AM the good shepherd, or in another passage, I AM the gate, or I AM the vine, etc. Some scholars call this an I AM Christology of the Fourth Gospel because it is used so frequently here, as opposed to the Synoptics. It is true that the Gospel of John has an intense emphasis on the person of Jesus, reflected in a high Christology. The joke is that if you ask Jesus in the Gospel of John how he s doing, he ll take two chapters to say he and the Father are just fine. The image of a shepherd is certainly one rooted in antiquity. There are not as many shepherds today as there were then. And the site of a shepherd was much more common in that culture than it is today. Yet, even though most of us probably do not know any shepherds, or even seen any recently, we are all familiar with the image. Even Pope Francis spoke about shepherds shortly after he became pope. He spoke about how he wanted priests to have the smell of the sheep on them. This kind of graphic, even smelly, analogy offended some people. One person responded, That sounds gross! Did he actually say that? But it is precisely the image Francis meant to convey about whom he wanted as priests, and the language stems from this gospel story about Jesus himself being the Good Shepherd. Interestingly, Jesus makes a distinction in this discourse about himself as the good shepherd and a hired man who works for money. The latter has no real concern for the sheep. He is in it only for the pay. Jesus, on the other hand, loves the sheep and has concern for them. He lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand will run away at the first sign of danger. The result of his running away is that the sheep are scattered. As we consider this in our own time we can see the many Christians, many of us, who have been scattered. As we listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd and come to him, we will be reunited. From Living Liturgy Carmel Comes to Saint Andrew's Saint Thérèse Study Group Please plan on joining us for First Saturday devotions with the Rosary at 7:30am, Mass at 8:00am and beginning on Saturday, June 2nd, a study of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux autobiography, "Story of a Soul: Study Edition available on Amazon for $18.00 for the paperback. This study edition is designed to assist contemporary readers to apply the spiritual insights of Story of a Soul to their lives. It provides introductions, reflections and discussion questions for each chapter of the text. We will meet in the Rectory dining room every First Saturday beginning June 2nd after the 8:00 AM Mass. We look forward to seeing you there. God bless you! Monday, April 23, 2018 Saint George, Martyr Acts 11:1-18; John 10:1-10 Old maps would indicate the end of the known world with the phrase, There be dragons here. It was a way of saying, It s probably not a good idea to go there. In a legend of Saint George, he did not shy away from doing battle with a dragon. In the only story of a canonized saint fighting such a creature, he not only killed this menacing animal that an army could not slay but also saved a princess, preached to the grateful people, distributed his reward money to the poor, and went on his way. Not a bad day s work. What dragons of the unknown of ignorance and the fear that accompanies it can you slay? What good word or gift can you pass along as you go your way? Tuesday, April 24, 2018 Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest & Martyr Acts 11:19-26; John 10:22-30 Lawyers are traditionally the butt of jokes for their ability to take any side of an argument. But many put their skills to use in the cause of justice. Saint Fidelis (d. 1622), nicknamed the Poor Man s Lawyer, decided to speak out only for the sake of the gospel. He joined the Capuchins and persuaded many through his preaching, his kindness as a confessor, and his devotion to the sick. Consider how your words and actions today have the power to testify for or against the gospel you believe.

6 Third Fourth Sunday of of Easter - April - April 15, 22, Saint Andrew Saint Andrew the Apostle the Apostle Parish Parish Page 6 Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist 1 Peter 5:5b-14; Mark 16:15-20 Written about 40 years after Christ s Resurrection, the Gospel of Mark is our closest and freshest gospel on the events of Jesus life. Like any great reporter, the evangelist does not insinuate himself into the story, which leaves us uncertain as to who he was. He could be the John Mark who was a cousin of Barnabas and associate of Paul, the Mark who is a later assistant to Peter, or both. One thing we do know is that he heeded Jesus commission to proclaim the Good News to all the world. Generations of believers have heard or read Mark s story. Even if you ve read it a hundred times, Mark s gospel is worth another read. Thursday, April 26, 2018 Acts 13:13-25; John 13:16-20 In the ancient world, when sandals were common footwear, foot-washing was an act of hospitality offered by a host when guests arrived at a house. Typically guests washed their own feet or a servant washed them, but a host wishing to show great respect for guests might do the washing him- or herself. Jesus sends us a clear signal by washing his disciples feet at the Last Supper. If we are willing to serve others with the same spirit of humility and hospitality, there will be a place at the eternal banquet for us as well. The Anniversary of our Diocese - Part III by Father Edward Quinlan What did the diocese look like in 1868? At the young age of 34 the newly consecrated Bishop Jeremiah J. Shanahan arrived in Harrisburg to take up his responsibilities for a sprawling diocese covering 18 counties in central Pennsylvania. (In 1901 three counties; Center, Clinton and Fulton were ceded to help form the Diocese of Altoona leaving the current 15.) There were about 25,000 Catholics in the diocese. There were 19 parishes with resident pastors and 34 missions and stations. Some 7 counties had no resident pastor. There were 7 parochial schools and one academy with a total enrollment of 955 students. Faculties consisted of 13 Religious and 10 lay teachers. The staff of the brand new diocese consisted of 19 diocesan priests, 3 Jesuit priests and 18 religious sisters from the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Diocesan & Local Happenings Friday, April 27, 2018 Acts 13:26-33; John 14:1-6 Modern gurus abound on talk shows and blogs, full of advice about how you should live your life. Some of their suggestions may be helpful; the best ones are borrowed from folk wisdom, good psychology, or even scripture, once or twice removed. Jesus has already issued the invitation to illuminate your path by following his way. Saint Anthony Claret ( ) underscored this invitation with a telling directive: Choose now what you would wish to have chosen at life s end. At every fork in the road, keep this suggestion in mind. Saturday, April 28, 2018 Saint Peter Chanel, Priest & Martyr Acts 13:44-52; John 14:7-14 Saint Peter Chanel was martyred in 1841 at the age of 38 on the island of Futuna in Oceania. He anticipated such an end to his life, hoping that it would bring about the conversion of the island s inhabitants to Christianity. It did. And while some may have initially converted due to fear of reprisal by the French for killing their missionary, this also shows how God works in mysterious ways, ways most of us cannot expect. Peter expected God to work his wonders. How often do you let go and let God take control? Indulge in some great expectations today.
