5 Sunday, February 10, 2019 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Luke 5:1-11 Diocese of Harrisburg Office of the Bishop January 29, 2019 My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Hometown monuments, markers, and memorials sometimes go by different names. For example, people who grew up in one era might recall an earlier name for a stadium or a building. In Chicago, the Sears Tower became the Willis Tower in Investors bought it several years later and were considering another name change. But many locals still refer to it as the Sears Tower. Many stadiums undergo name changes as well based on naming rights sold to the highest bidding corporation. These names are a reflection of our culture and can be difficult for foreigners or others to follow. Just imagine some talking about the Willis Tower when others know it only as the Sears Tower. Are we speaking of the same thing? Where is the Willis Tower? We see something like this happening in the Gospel of Luke today, when we hear about the Lake of Gennesaret, which is also known as the Sea of Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee! The New Testament uses three different names for the same body of water, which makes it challenging for those of us reading about this two thousand years later and more than an ocean away. Such is the setting for the call of Simon as Luke tells it. This story is different from that told in Mark, Matthew, or John. Here Luke has a focus on Simon, without his brother Andrew. In fact, Luke mentions Andrew only in the list of the twelve (Luke 6:12; Acts 1:13) where he calls him the brother of Simon. Otherwise we hear nothing of Andrew from Luke. Luke also tells us in this story that Simon was Simon Peter, prior to Jesus naming him Peter. And we also hear about James and John, the sons of Zebedee, partners of Simon. According to Luke, this was not Simon s first encounter with Jesus. Immediately prior to the story in today s gospel, Jesus healed Simon s mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39). So this provides more background to Simon s appeal to Jesus, Depart form me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Simon has encountered the power of Jesus in the healing of this mother-in-law and now in the miraculous catch of fish. Faced with this Simon is utterly aware of his own humanity and humility. Jesus responds with a line that has reverberated through the centuries, Do not be afraid; / from now on you will be catching men. What a difference this story is in the hands of the master storyteller Luke. From Mark (1:16-20) he inherited a story about Jesus call of Simon, Andrew, James, and John, all of whom immediately dropped their nets to follow him. Luke instead places focus squarely on Simon Peter to the point that we lose Andrew and only hear of James and John in the closing verses. Furthermore, be preceding this story with the healing of the mother-in-law, Simon s leaving everything to follow Jesus becomes more plausible. We are in the hands of a remarkable theologian and evangelist. We would do well to read his story carefully and with attention to detail. From Living Liturgy Our Catholic Church along with many others who cannot tolerate the culture of death have worked tirelessly since the Roe v. Wade decision to end abortion. The Pro-Life cause has made progress as we see the number of reported abortions decrease each year. However, the passage of the Reproductive Health Act in our neighboring state of New York last week could change that. After last November s elections, control of the New York state senate changed hands. Immediately, Governor Andrew Cuomo jubilantly announced that his Reproductive Health Act would be given top priority with the new legislature in January True to his word, on January 22, the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade the tragic Supreme Court decision which made it legal to kill unborn children the New York legislature passed the bill and immediately Governor Cuomo signed the bill into law, to a standing ovation. This law is dangerous for women and is a death sentence for children. Under this law, abortion is now permitted up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. Children born at this stage of life are viable, that is, are routinely able to survive with medical care. This law also provides broad exceptions that would allow abortion up to moments before birth. It allows doctors and non-doctors to legally perform abortions and removes the protection of infants who are born alive during an abortion procedure. Gov. Cuomo, who proclaims to be Catholic, did not just sign a bill into law; he signed the death warrant for countless, innocent babies, who can now be killed for any reason through all nine months of pregnancy. How heart-rending it is that these actions were met by many in the New York legislative chamber with resounding applause. All people who understand the dignity and sacredness of human life are outraged by the provisions of this law. Now more than ever, we must stand together as a unified Church and pray for the mothers, fathers and children of New York. Now is the time to speak for the unborn and do all we can to peacefully advocate for their rights as human beings. More than ever you and I must resolve to pray and to work peacefully, yet with firm determination, for the legal protection of the right to life for children in the womb. I pray you will join me in asking our Lord to protect these most innocent and now ever more vulnerable babies lives. Sincerely in Christ, Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer
6 Daily Readings & Reflections Monday, February 11, 2019 Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes Genesis 1:1-19; Mark 6:53-56 Today is World Day of the Sick, a feast day instituted in 1992 by Pope John Paul II, shortly after he himself was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease. He chose this date to coincide with the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, who is said to have appeared to a peasant girl in a small town in France. Millions of pilgrims have since gone there to seek healing and comfort in its waters. Join with all believers today in prayer for those struggling with illness, and offer up your own suffering in union with Christ on the cross. Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Genesis 1:20 2:4a; Mark 7:1-13 Jesus had a lot of criticism for hypocritical Pharisees, who followed the letter but not the spirit of the law. Going through the motions won t cut it with Christ! But he understands, too, that following him can t possibly be a sustained spiritual high there are periods of dryness and things to be learned from those, too. Enlivening your relationship with God takes effort. There are lots of tools for shaking up your routine: volunteer, join a Bible study group, make a votive offering, or even go on a pilgrimage to a holy site. And whatever you do, put your heart into it! Wednesday, February 13, 2019 Genesis 2:4b-9, 15-17; Mark 7:14-23 In his book Immortal Diamond, Franciscan friar Richard Rohr suggests moving your negative thinking from your head to your heart. When you feel animosity toward someone, he says, imagine them literally inside your beating heart, surrounded by your flowing blood, until it s impossible for you to remain antagonistic. Do it in an almost physical sense, and you will see how calmly and quickly it works, he says. Now the Sacred Heart [of Jesus] and the Immaculate Heart [of Mary] have been transferred to you.... The sacred heart is then your heart, too. Thursday, February 14, 2019 Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk and Methodius, Bishop Genesis 2:18-25; Mark 7:24-30 Many Bible stories about brothers take a bad turn. Think Cain and Abel, Esau and Jacob, Joseph and, well, everybody. Other brothers fare better: Peter and Andrew, or Zebedee s inseparable sons James and John. In the lives of the saints, siblings often turn out to be allies. Take these two ninth-century brothers of Thessalonica in Greece: Cyril was the brilliant one, and Methodius the contemplative. That could have caused conflict, but it didn t. Cyril went to the missions in Slovenia, inventing the Cyrillic alphabet to assist his new flock in learning their faith. Methodius joined him later and carried on the work after Cyril s death. Send your sibling or a spiritual brother or sister a Valentine s note! Friday, February 15, 2019 Genesis 3:1-8; Mark 7:31-37 Knowledge is power, said Ben Franklin. The serpent said the same thing to Eve, and she bought it. Although knowledge often does give us access to power, it doesn t guarantee us wisdom. An attribute of God, wisdom is acquired only through the indwelling Holy Spirit. In the Bible knowledge is imagined sometimes as tantalizing fruit dangling from a forbidden tree. Wisdom, however, sets a lavish table at which her guests may dine by accepting her invitation. When faced with the choice between fast food and fine dining, take the opportunity to savor the meal that lasts to eternity. Saturday, February 16, 2019 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Genesis 3:9-24; Mark 8:1-10 Some folks will always set out food when you visit their homes no matter what time of day it is. If you re smart you learn to drop by when you re good and hungry! Jesus never let anyone walk away hungry either even if it meant setting the table for 5,000. His mother foretold that fact in her great song, the Magnificat: He has filled the hungry with good things. When tired of the junk food the world has to offer, pray Mary s Magnificat (Luke 1:47-55) in faith that God will fill you with good things. Diocesan & Local Happenings Closing Mass for the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese Please join Bishop Ronald W. Gainer as Celebrant and Homilist to conclude the 150 th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Diocese of Harrisburg. A reception, featuring a sampling of ethnic foods from various ethnic and cultural groups that comprise the faithful of the Diocese, will be held immediately following the Mass. The Closing Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Church at 3:00 p.m. on March 3, For additional information, visit Save the Date Hear Bill Donaghy as the Keynote speaker at the Holy Family Radio Benefit Dinner.
