Carmel Comes to Saint Andrew's Saint Thérèse Study Group Please plan on joining us for First Saturday devotions with the Rosary at 7:30am, Mass at 8:00am and beginning on Saturday, June 2nd, a study of the Saint Thérèse of Lisieux autobiography, "Story of a Soul: Study Edition available on Amazon for $18.00 for the paperback. This study edition is designed to assist contemporary readers to apply the spiritual insights of Story of a Soul to their lives. It provides introductions, reflections and discussion questions for each chapter of the text. We will meet in the Rectory dining room every First Saturday beginning June 2nd after the 8:00 AM Mass. Refugee Relief Kit Thanks Many thanks for your generous donations (18 bath towels, 18 hand towels, 5 wash cloths, 114 bars of soap, and 87 toothbrushes) for the Cumberland Valley Relief Center hygiene kits for refugees. Other donated items not accepted by Cumberland Valley were donated to Women in Need, Esther House, and New Hope Shelter. Your gifts are greatly appreciated. Sunday, May 6, 2018 Sixth Sunday of Easter Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John 15:9-17 When we are young we learn a list of dos and don ts. Don t cross the street without looking both ways. Do show respect for your elders. Don t misbehave. Do treat people the way you would like to be treated. Lend a hand in cleaning the dishes after a meal. The list is seemingly endless. Some grade-school children learn the list well and follow all the rules. And some of these might even become a little self-righteous with the way they follow the rules in the midst of many others who do not. There is a comfort that can come from following the rules, doing what is expected, keeping the list. But there also comes a time when we grow out of childhood, internalize the purpose of the rules, and live as adults. Even the Old Testament had a list, which today we refer to as the Ten Commandments. Honor your father and mother. Do not covet another s belongings. Here again, learning the list and following it is rather easy and straightforward. It s literally a checklist as to how to be good and honorable in God s sight. And too often we encounter (or have become ourselves) those who are a bit smug in the way they keep the rules and follow the list, much like proud grade-school children who find comfort and validation in mere obedience. But Jesus gives us a command in today s gospel that supersedes all others. It is simply this: love one another. Of course, with a command like this, it can be seductive to return to a checklist! How much easier would it be to maintain a checklist, such as, going to church, celebrating the sacraments, fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. But the command issued by Jesus is much more difficult. A command to love knows no bounds, knows no checklist. It can be much easier to simply attend church once a week, and again on holy days of obligation, than it can be to love. By this command Jesus invites us to an adult spirituality, no longer satisfied by keeping a list. We are not children who need to be told to help with cleaning up after dinner. We do this naturally out of love. And we likely do much more. There is no box to check for love. Love does not count the cost or put a limit on what price is too high. Love can always do more. Love is based on a personal relationship with another that is not transactional but self-giving. As Jesus says in the gospel, his love for his friends reaches a point of laying down his own life for them. There is no boundary to what love calls us to do. And for that reason, we might prefer a list of dos and don ts. But that is not what we receive from Jesus. We receive from him a command simple but demanding: love one another. From Living Liturgy

In fact, the world is here in the first place because God s love overflowed God wanted to share the divine love. God even sent Jesus and became human so as to invite people more deeply into life in God. So shouldn t the response to all this generosity be a generous one in which we welcome God into our lives, are open and inviting with God in prayer, and honor and care for our world and its creatures? Start opening doors today. Tuesday, May 08, 2018 Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 Much has been written about the importance of a ministry of presence of being with people in times of need. Important as presence is, there is also a ministry of absence, said noted spirituality author Henri Nouwen. We should never forget that it is the Holy Spirit ultimately who brings healing and comfort to people and that we need to trust God to do the work that only God can do in human hearts. There came a time when the risen Christ had to depart, but with assurances the Holy Spirit would be with us always. Sometimes your absence serves in a way your presence can t. Wednesday, May 09, 2018 Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; John 16:12-15 Often in stories of the church, both ancient and modern, you hear in the headlines about the scoffers. The anonymous faithful are relegated to the margins and the footnotes. Is God dead? the cover of Time magazine inquired funereally in bold red letters on a stark black background in It would hardly make the back page to reply: Not in the hearts and lives of believers. The pages of the New Testament are sprinkled liberally with folks who encountered Jesus or the apostles and came to faith. Good news travels quietly. Make a little noise with yours. Thursday, May 10, 2018 The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord A Holy Day of Obligation Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23 or 4:1-13; Mark 16:15-20 Signs are not destinations. They may assist us in getting where we re going, tell how far we ve come or what to do next, but they re not intended to be goals in themselves. Early Christians viewed certain signs as indicators of spiritual authority: the ability to heal, inspired speech, command of dark forces, or facing dangers without harm. Saint Paul warned us not to become enchanted with power for its own sake. Instead, we should consider the needs of the community and how best to serve. Name some modern signs that someone is demonstrating with genuine spiritual authority. Friday, May 11, 2018 Acts 18:9-18; John 16:20-23 Faith can seem like a time-travel video game. We look to the past, but the past is also present, and the present always looks to the future (for an example, think of the Mass). We learn the kingdom of God is within and among us but not yet fulfilled. We worship and follow a Lord who appeared in human flesh, left in body but remained in Spirit, and will come again to usher us into the eternal. No wonder we get a little lost sometimes! Here s your compass: The world is broken but God still thinks it s good. Through Jesus, God calls us to help restore that goodness in ways large and small. And, finally, one day that work will be done. Saturday, May 12, 2018 Saints Nereus & Achilleus, Martyrs Acts 18:23-28; John 16:23b-28 In the early years of the church it was a matter of debate whether Christians should belong to the Roman army, although many did. Two of the martyrs remembered today, Nereus and Achilleus, were members of the elite Praetorian Guard, but after they became Christians they refused to serve and were eventually exiled and executed. At the end of the fourth century Pope Damasus had an inscription made in their honor, which read in part: O miracle of faith!... they become converted... they throw away their shields, their armor, and their blood-stained javelins. Confessing the faith of Christ, they rejoice to bear testimony to its triumph. What bold and perhaps risky paths can you take to live out what you believe? In the kindness of your prayers, please pray for the repose of the soul of Carolyn Krouse. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Youth Group Minister(s) At the youth group meeting on April 29 th, Peter and Jen Nelson announced that they will be stepping down as the youth ministers starting July 1, They expressed that they have thoroughly enjoyed working with your youth these past three years. These are amazing kids! They still hope to volunteer when they can, but are no longer registering for events and planning/leading meetings.
