Statues in the Church In viewing some of the pictures of the Sanctuary of the Church from years past, statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Thérèse held a prominent place in addition to Our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. I am not sure of the reason why they were removed over the years, however, we know as Catholics that they help us to recall what we are meant to be, namely Saints in glory. With this insight in mind, I would like to return to this timeless teaching of the Church, and once again have some statues present in the Sanctuary and other locations. If anyone feels moved to offer donations for the purpose of helping in this effort, please kindly place an offering in an envelope marked Statues, and place in the collection basket any Sunday. Thank you. Parish Advocate Needed: The Diocesan Office of Ministry with People with Disabilities administers a Parish Advocacy Program to support parishes in responding to the gifts and needs of their parishioners living with disabilities, including their families and caregivers. Our parish is currently seeking a volunteer to serve as our Parish Advocate. The Parish Advocate is a parishioner who assists in working for and with parishioners with disabilities. In consultation with the Pastor, the Advocate identifies persons with disabilities and their families, assesses the needs and gifts of those parishioners and works toward elimination of barriers to pursue their full participation in the life of the parish. There are no mandatory qualifications for volunteering; candidates should have a heart for people with disabilities and be eager to welcome, include and work with these parishioners and their families. The Advocate will become part of the Diocesan network of Advocates and will receive support from the Diocesan Office of Ministry with People with Disabilities. Interested volunteers should contact the Parish Office.

5 Third Sunday of Easter - April 15, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; 1 John 2:1-5a; Luke 24:35-48 The student teacher was eager to receive some comments after his first experience in the classroom. The mentor offered a gentle critique: When some students don t understand the lesson, it isn t enough simply to repeat it more loudly. But the student teacher s experience can be our own many times. My explanation was so good! They ll understand it if I repeat it again But instead of repeating something over and over, more loudly each time, it might be good to try another example or another explanation instead. Or it might be worth the effort to appeal to a different style of learner. Perhaps the first approach to the lesson appealed to visual learners. The second could be pitched to the auditory learners. Now that we are in the third week of Easter, we hear yet another story of a resurrection appearance of Jesus. There are a number of different Easter stories that appeal to us on a variety of levels. Initially, the story was the finding of the empty tomb. Then, we had a story of the appearance of Jesus to the disciples without Thomas, followed by one with Thomas. Thomas says he will not believe unless he probes the nail marks. Now we have another story where the risen Jesus eats a meal. He is said to have flesh and bones. He is not a ghost. His eating baked fish virtually confirms that. If we didn t understand with the empty tomb, if we didn t understand when Jesus appeared to even Thomas, now there is another appearance where he graphically demonstrates that he is present amongst them. Of course, each of the three stories we are referring to are from different gospel writes: the empty tomb (Mark), the appearance to Thomas (John) and now the risen Jesus eating fish (Luke). But these texts are given to us on successive Sundays to confirm for us that Jesus truly rose from the dead. Moreover, today s gospel passage begins with a line that should not be neglected: the disciples recounted how Jesus was made known to them / in the breaking of the bread. Of course, the Emmaus story precedes this in the Gospel of Luke. And Luke is telling his audience that the breaking of bread is the way Jesus is made known to the community. No longer is Jesus appearing to this assembled followers. That ended with the ascension. Instead, the community will now come together and experience Christ in the breaking of the bread, or in what we call Eucharist. So in addition to the empty tomb, and the appearances, this is yet another way this resurrected Lord is made known to us. By hearing a variety of different stories, we might like his disciples, come gradually to accepting the risen Christ. From Living Liturgy to the many people who helped to make Lent, Holy Week, and Easter a beautiful and meaningful celebration: the Liturgy Committee for decorating the church; Kathy Bourdeau and the choir for their preparation and singing throughout Holy Week and Easter; our sacristans, extraordinary ministers, lectors, cantors and ushers for their time and assistance; Mike McGovern, Jay Wandalowski & Chuck Frame for their assistance in the sanctuary and sacristy; The Knights of Holy Temple for being there for all of Holy week and the Easter Vigil service; altar servers for their time and assistance; Peg Wagaman and RCIA Team for accompanying our Catechumen and Candidates in their faith journey; the Love Group / Youth Group for organizing the Children s Easter Egg Hunt and to all our parishioners who came to pray and Monday, April 16, 2018 Acts 6:8-15; John 6:22-29 In order to bring something new into the world something about the old has to change. Prospective parents give up a lot of freedom when they invite a child into their family. To move to a new place you have to surrender the old one. When Jesus inaugurated the way, the truth, and the life in his ministry, it threatened business-as-usual for the contented synagogue-goers around him. They feared the destruction of the old practices and didn t cheerfully anticipate the arrival of the new. Change is always intimidating. Pray for the grace to make room for the new. Tuesday, April 17, 2018 Acts 7:51 8:1a; John 6:30-35 Father Damien was maligned after his death. It was novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, however, who visited the island leper colony where Damien ministered in 1889 and set the record straight. When a Honolulu pastor publicly called Damien a coarse, dirty man whose leprosy should be attributed to his carelessness, Stevenson rebutted: You are one of those who have an eye for faults and failures; that you take a pleasure to find and publish them; and that, having found them, you make haste to forget the virtues and the real success which had alone introduced them to your knowledge. It is a dangerous frame of mind. Not all are called to Damien s heroism, but every Christian must reject a narrow-mindedness that sees only the faults and failures of others.

6 Third Sunday of Easter - April 15, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Wednesday, April 18, 2018 Acts 8:1b-8; John 6:35-40 Christians who define their faith in limiting terms who s out and who s in, for example appear to have missed the memo from Christ that all are welcome at his table. Too often throughout history, and today as well, a desire for religious purity ends up hurting a lot of people who don t fit the mold. Avoid exclusionary ideology; remember that everyone else doesn t have to be wrong for you to be right with God. Christ is bigger than that, and we can be, too. Thursday, April 19, 2018 Acts 8:26-40; John 6:44-51 Forever is a long time, our mothers reminded us when we moaned about how it would take that long to do our homework or chores, or for summer to come again. But somehow the homework and the chores got done, and summer arrived but forever never did. How will we know when forever begins? Technically, it already has; that is, the idea of everlasting life is not something for the future but is a continuation of the life we now enjoy. When the priest prays at Mass, Lead us to everlasting life, he is really saying, Keep us in everlasting life. Time to start living life for keeps! Friday, April 20, 2018 Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59 Impressionist painter Claude Monet, a master at capturing the effects of light on landscapes, often found the process harrowing. He would paint the same scene with a dozen canvases and still not be satisfied. While trying to capture the color of an Italian landscape, Monet wrote: I m afraid what I m doing is just dreadful and yet I really am understating it; the light is simply terrifying. Monet s Water Lilies, his final masterpiece in the study of light, was completed well after he had lost most of his sight. In the end, he had overcome his fears and learned to be the light. Our mission as Christians is similar: to painstakingly master our doubts and become one with the Light of Christ. Saturday, April 21, 2018 Memorial of Anselm, Bishop & Doctor of the Church Acts 9:31-42; John 6:60-69 Faith seeking understanding is the motto of Saint Anselm of Canterbury ( ). Anselm saw faith that merely believes what it ought as no faith at all. For Anselm, an active love of God, or faith, seeks a greater knowledge of God. That belief led him into the heady world of philosophical theology in search of a single proof for the existence of God. He finally came up with what he believed to be an irrefutable argument: God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived. Although immediately criticized by a contemporary philosopher, Anselm s argument continues to be considered in any discussion of the existence of God. What steps can you take to deepen your knowledge of God? The Anniversary of our Diocese - Part II by Father Edward Quinlan Pastoral care for Catholics settling in the original 13 colonies was first entrusted to Jesuit priests from England and later from from Germany. Parishes and missions were under the supervision of the Diocese of London as these were English colonies. With the end of the Revolutionary War and our official separation from England, as memorialized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the time was ripe for the formal foundation of the Church in our new country. Pope Pius VI in 1790 will create the Diocese of Baltimore and appointed Father John Carroll as the first bishop. The diocese included all of the United States at the time. The new diocese was estimated by Bishop Carroll to have 25,000 Catholics and he had 25 priests to serve them. The US population was about 4 million at that time. The new country was open for business and by 1830 began to grow rapidly. Immigration was slow at first then significantly increased in the 1830 s. Many Germans were among those arriving in this wave. By 1845 large numbers of Irish were coming to the US to flee starvation in their native land. With succeeding decades the new arrivals were coming from central and southern Europe as well. This was significantly increasing the Catholic population in the country. By 1808 Pope Pius VII creates Baltimore as an Archdiocese, dividing it to form the dioceses of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Bardstown (Ky). Philadelphia at this time encompasses the whole state of Pennsylvania. Our central Pennsylvania homeland is part of this early diocese, and we are blessed to be able to account as one of our bishops, Saint John Neumann. By way of note, his relics are encased in our main altar. In time, the state will see other dioceses created from the western counties, Pittsburgh (1843) and Erie (1853). On March 3, 1868 Pope Pius IX will direct that the dioceses of Scranton and Harrisburg be created from the territory of Philadelphia. A young priest, assigned as the rector of the minor seminary in Philadelphia, will be appointed as the first Bishop of Harrisburg, Father Jeremiah Shanahan. Some of us might see images of crosses and crucifixes so often, we may not realize that in the ancient world, the cross was a horrifying image. Yet the cross is the primary symbol of our faith. It is through Jesus death that we are g i v e n s a l v a t i o n a n d e t e r n a l l i f e. In this session of Augustine Institute Studios' original production, Symbolon, Dr. Edward Sri explores how Jesus death and resurrection liberates us from sin and opens us to new life.
