The Annual March for Life is Friday, January 19, Saint Andrew and Saint Mark/ Saint Luke are sharing a bus to travel to Washington D.C. to attend the March. There are limited number of bus seats available and are on a first come first serve basis. Tickets are $10. The bus will be leaving from the Grove-Bowersox parking lot at 10:00am and will be arriving back at approximately 6:00pm. Please bring a packed lunch and drink. Once John points the way to Jesus, once he testifies to the Lamb of God, John in effect disappears from the gospel (there are some minor passing references). His role is basically confined to chapter 1 of the Fourth Gospel, and it consists in testifying to Jesus. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... Dear Parishioners, On this Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, other readings and the gospel acclamation may speak more directly to joy or glad tidings than the gospel, which gives us its version of the story of John. Of course, he is often referred to as John the Baptist in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but not in this gospel. Here he is clearly and simply called a man (John 1:6), and when he is named, it is merely John without modifier (e.g., 1:6, 15, 19, 26, 28, 32). In this way, and in many others in this gospel, he is distinguished from Jesus. The Fourth Gospel states clearly and unequivocally that John was not the light, but was sent from God to testify to the light (John 1:8). John admits that he is not the Messiah; he is not Elijah. (In both Matthew [11:14] and Mark [9:13], John is considered the Elijah figure, said to be so by Jesus himself). In the Fourth Gospel, John is not even the prophet. His role is to cry out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord. Such a deflection away from any attention or claims to himself seems to reflect the interests of the evangelist more than the historical situation of the time. Indeed, there are other clues in the Fourth Gospel and other New Testament writings that tell us that John continued to have a following years, perhaps decades, after his death. Today we recognize that John prepared the way for Jesus. This first chapter of the Fourth Gospel reminded the early Christian community that John was merely a precursor, a forerunner, to Jesus the Messiah. We have heard these stories so often, and frequently from the Synoptic point of view. When we read the Fourth Gospel on its on terms we see that John says he baptizes with water. We might expect him to say, but the one coming after me baptizes with the Holy Spirit as we hear in the Synoptics. Instead, John says, I baptize with water; /but there is one among you whom you do not recognize. There is nothing in this gospel about Jesus baptizing with the Holy Spirit. Instead, Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Even the use of the term sin in the singular rather than the plural is deliberate. Rather than merely taking away individual sins, Jesus takes away the cosmic force of sin. The Fourth Gospel reflects a different but congruent theological thought world than the Synoptics. The differ How quickly time flies!! Here we are at the Third Week of Advent already, and 2 months since my heart surgery! But, as we hear in the Entrance Antiphon, and as the Rose color vestment symbolizes, we are to RE- JOICE!! And rejoicing is something we must always do, at all times and in all the situations of daily life. I can say this with all sincerity because, in looking back at my life during my quiet time of rest and recuperation, I can see His powerful love always with me, even, and most especially, in what I would consider the most trying, or difficult and painful times of my life. And that really is what Advent and Christmas are all about, for Jesus came to His chosen people, and now to us, in what could be described as turbulent times. He comes to heal us, He comes to bring us His peace and love! Are you ready to receive it? If so, then REJOICE! If not, ask for His help to be ready. For He is there for YOU! Father Robert Monday, December 18, 2017 Jeremiah 23:5-8; Matthew 1:18-25 Life can seem chaotic. This is true in the mad rush to Christmas, but also in the everyday challenges that make us wonder if life makes sense. In response to this human need for order and meaning we pray that the Lord, the one who holds all things together, will be with us: O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: Come, stretch out your mighty hand to set us free. Be mindful throughout your day that the Lord is with you in all that you do.

Mary s cousin Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, must have felt an enormous wave of surprise when she discovered what was hidden inside that she was pregnant at an advanced age. Surprise was followed by gratitude for the gift that had been given to her. We might pause for a moment today to unwrap the many surprising gifts with which God already has graced our lives. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 Isaiah 7:10-14; Luke 1:26-38 Many people believe God has a special plan just for them if only they could figure out what it is! From this point of view, discovering what God wants for a person is like a search for a missing key: Find it, and you can get in; don t, and you re locked out. Discerning what God may be calling you to, though, may be as simple as seeing where in the words of campus minister Sally Willitzer in the 2011 issue of VISION Vocation Guide you can best be an instrument of love in the world, and that means not only discovering where you can most effectively help others but also what makes you happy. Let it wear itself out, for it cannot endure and passes like a shadow. But we, buried deep in the wounds of Christ, why should we be dismayed? This comes to us courtesy of Peter Canisius ( ), Jesuit theologian and defender of the church during the Protestant Reformation. Often we cannot ignore the world s madness and must vigorously oppose it. But sometimes our candle lit against the darkness is all the opposition that s required. Saturday, December 23, 2017 Memorial of Saint John of Kanty, Priest Malachi 3:1-4, 23-24; Luke 1:57-66 If John of Kanty in 15th-century Poland could have known he would one day be venerated as a saint, he would have been astonished. Although he was a brilliant scripture scholar, he was also a humble parish priest. Even when treated unfairly for years, he could accept unjust blame and criticism without flinching because he believed that he could protect his parishioners and defeat the power of evil by absorbing it into himself. In a culture of blame like our own, the ability to defuse violence and anger is a rare gift but one we should cultivate instead of seeking revenge or proving ourselves right when wronged.
