In order to continue our mission and ministries, we encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family to reflect on the needs of the parish and your current giving level. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass, especially during our special commitment weekend on January 26/27. If you have any questions regarding the Journeying Together as the Family of God Program, please feel free to contact the parish office at , ext.5 or at office@standrewwbo.org. The baby is welcomed into the Christian community, a community of grace, support, and encouragement in the face of all that life can bring. This ritual action has its roots not only Jesus but in John, the Baptist who was so named precisely because of this action he performed at the Jordan River. The early followers of Jesus recognized that Jesus own ministry began after he was baptized by John, a story first recounted in the Gospel of Mark, which states that John preached a baptism of forgiveness of sins. This story is echoed in Luke as well (Luke 3:3). Thus, we (and the early Christians) experience a theological quandary. Why did Jesus, who is said to be without sin, submit to baptism by John? To what purpose or to what end is a baptism of forgiveness of sins to one without sin? Responses to this question were as varied as the gospel writers and church fathers themselves. Matthew says that it is to fulfill all righteousness (Matt 3:15; NABRE). The Gospel of John simply neglects to say that Jesus was baptized by John. Instead, John the Baptist merely testifies to Jesus without baptizing him at all. Luke places the baptism of Jesus in the passive voice and almost as an afterthought: After all the people had been baptized/and Jesus also had been baptized (Luke 3:21). Other than the Synoptics, neither Paul nor any other New Testament authors mention Jesus being baptized. As indicated by the gospels, the ministry of Jesus began at or shortly after his baptism. And Luke shows that the Holy Spirit was active at this time, descending upon Jesus in bodily form like a dove. Though Matthew says the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, only Luke says in bodily form like a dove. This phrase reflects Luke s tendency to objectivize the supernatural and it is something we will notice throughout this gospel. Further, Luke is also the only evangelist to say that Jesus was at prayer during this event. Prayer is another Lucan theme that we will see throughout his gospel: Luke shows Jesus at prayer more than any other evangelist. Luke will also show the early Christian community at prayer in the Acts of the Apostles. So in these four short verses we have Lucan theology bursting from the page. Jesus is baptized by John (passive voice) though John preaches a baptism of forgiveness of sins. Luke objectivizes the supernatural by saying the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove, and Luke shows Jesus at prayer. From Living Liturgy

5 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Daily Readings & Reflections Monday, January 14, 2019 Hebrews 1:1-6; Mark 1:14-20 This month the liturgy uses extensively the Letter to the Hebrews, which has been called the most elegant and sophisticated, and perhaps the most enigmatic, text of first-century Christianity. In early centuries it was usually attributed to Saint Paul, but the language and theology are very unlike Paul s letters. The truth is, no one knows for certain who authored it. After discussing the possibilities, Origen ( ), the first great biblical scholar, remarked: But who wrote the epistle, in truth, God knows. Regardless of authorship, Hebrews is famous for its image of the high priesthood of Christ. That priesthood of all believers belongs to all of us as followers of Christ are you in for the journey? Tuesday, January 15, 2019 Hebrews 2:5-12; Mark 1:21-28 Jesus astounded the people who met him along the way not only by the great deeds and signs that he performed and by what he taught to love one s enemies or forgive countless times. The amazement of the crowds was also due to the authority with which he spoke, not citing other rabbis or scholars but teaching from his own soul. In the church we often identify authority only with the teaching office, the Catechism, the decrees of popes, or the sense of the faithful. But the authority with which each baptized person testifies to Christ is also the authority, the authenticity, of his or her own life of faith, justice, and mercy. Wednesday, January 16, 2019 Hebrews 2:14-18; Mark 1:29-39 Woody Allen is quoted as saying, 90 percent of life is showing up. What, though, do we do with the other 10 percent? The story of God calling the prophet Samuel attests that just showing up won t take you the whole way. The first two times Samuel heard a voice calling him in the night, he responded only, Here I am! The priest Eli, knowing something of God s ways, informs the young man that merely presenting himself in the holy place is insufficient. Samuel must also declare himself the servant of the Lord. Likewise, we should not rely on just showing up for the Lord. The final 10 percent is the part that makes the difference. Thursday, January 17, 2019 Memorial of Saint Anthony, Abbot Hebrews 3:7-14; Mark 1:40-45 When people think of a hermit, someone like Saint Anthony the Great usually comes to mind. He was one of the first in the Christian tradition to give away his worldly wealth and go off to live alone in the desert. But consider this: There might be Catholic hermits in your very neighborhood! It s not common, but this vocation involves living a life of prayer and contemplation in solitude in any diocese where a person might be, with the acceptance and under the direction of their bishop. Pray for those holy hermits who could be in your midst. Friday, January 18, 2019 Hebrews 4:1-5, 11; Mark 2:1-12 Today begins the Octave ( eight days ) of Prayer for Christian Unity, a week of special prayer for the unity of all Christians with Jesus the Lord who prayed at the Last Supper for his followers that they all may be one. Many things keep Christians in their separate churches and communities. But in the end they share a common faith in Jesus who shows us who God is and calls us to love one another as God loves us. Pray today and this week, and beyond this week that Christians will find more to unite them than divide them. Saturday, January 19, 2019 Hebrews 4:12-16; Mark 2:13-17 Not sure what you can do to promote Christian unity besides avoiding calling other Christians non-catholics? Here is some simple advice found in Vatican II s on Ecumenism: All the faithful should remember that the more effort they make to live holier lives according to the gospel, the better will they further Christian unity and put it into practice. For the closer their union with the Father, the Word, and the Spirit, the more deeply and easily will they be able to grow in mutual brotherly love. This change of heart and holiness of life, along with public and private prayer for the unity of Christians, should be regarded as the soul of the whole ecumenical movement, and merits the name spiritual ecumenism Contribution Statements The 2018 Contribution statements will be mailed the week of January 21, 2019 for parishioners who donated $250 or more during If you are not scheduled to receive a statement but would like one, please contact Susan at the parish office, , ext 5. Saint Andrew contribution statements DO NOT include the Bishop s Annual Lenten Appeal gifts or Capital Campaign contributions. Statements for the Lenten Appeal will be mailed directly from the Diocese of Harrisburg for gifts of $250 and above. To request a Lenten Appeal Statement, please contact , ext 336 or development@hbgdiocese.org. A separate contribution statement for Capital Campaign donations will be mailed to those parishioners who donated $250 or more during Knights of Columbus Super Bowl Party Sunday, February 3, 6:00pm for members and guests. Bring appetizers or snacks to share.
