Sunday, October 1 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ezekiel 18:25-28; Philippians 2:1-11; Matthew 21:28-32 This Sunday begins a series of gospel selections over the next three weeks, each beginning with the introductory phrase, Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people (or similar words). In each gospel, the phrase introduces a parable that strikes at the hardened and misguided hearts of these religious leaders. They were narrow and exclusive in their belief about who could be saved: only those people chosen from of old by God and who strictly kept the traditions that had been developed. Forgotten by these leaders was the lived law of love of God and neighbor also handed down from of old, Forgotten by them was the message of the prophets calling the people to conversion and renewed covenantal living. Forgotten by them was God s incomparable mercy and compassion which does not restrict salvation to a chosen few but instead extends salvation to anyone who is faithful to the divine will. At this point in Matthew s gospel Jesus has triumphantly entered Jerusalem. These confrontations about who can be saved contribute to the religious leaders determined and hateful desire to have Jesus condemned and put to death. Jesus does not shrink from the confrontations, from the truth, from his own choice to be utterly faithful to his Father s will. Indeed, these gospels suggest a new twist to the saying that we must walk the talk. What Jesus is teaching through these parables is that we must walk the walk. The walk is resoluteness about our relationship with the heavenly Father and doing the divine will. In this Sunday s gospel Jesus pointedly indicts the chief priests and elders of the people by equating them in this parable with the second son who does not do the father s will. Surprisingly, who does do the father s will are tax collectors and prostitutes. Their sinful lives indicated an initial no to God, but then they came to belief, changed their minds, and repented when they heard a call to the way of righteousness. Believing is not paying lip service to doing the Father s will. Believing is changing our way of living, walking the way of righteousness, and doing the Father s will. Believing is walking the walk with Jesus, even when that walk includes confrontation, suffering and death. Truth be told, all of us are a little like both sons in the parable. Sometimes we hear and respond faithfully to God s will, but at other times our actions don t carry through what we hear and believe. The good news in this is that God does not change the divine mind about calling us to salvation. Whether we say yes or no to God s call, God does keep calling us. We are the ones who need a change of mind. We are the one who believe in God s offer of salvation and faithfully do God s will. From Living Liturgy

Devotion to angels grew in the monastic tradition, beginning with Saint Benedict and getting a big boost from the 12th-century reformer Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. By the 16th century the feast the church celebrates today in honor of guardian angels was well established. Whether you embrace the tradition literally or think of angels as expressions of God s love and care extended to all of creation or both today is a day to be thankful that you do not walk alone in the spiritual life. Tuesday, October 03, 2017 Zechariah 8:20-23; Luke 9:51-56 Some things in our lives can be left to float in indecision or even inattention. That s the pile of stuff on your desk or in the closet you keep adding to but never subtract from. Other things require commitment. And every commitment we make is an act of faith in God, faith that God will see us through, come better or worse. Think of the extraordinary commitments we make to friends, spouses, family, neighbors, and employers. Sometimes it is time to choose. Or, as Yogi Berra quipped: When you come to a fork in the road, take it! Wednesday, October 04, 2017 Memorial of Francis of Assisi Nehemiah 2:1-8; Luke 9:57-62 In his wonderful Canticle of the Creatures, Saint Francis of Assisi praises God for the delightful family he has enjoyed in the creatures he calls Sir Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother Wind, Sister Water, and Brother Fire. His prayer for Sister Mother Earth includes praise for the one who sustains and governs us, and who produces varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs. Two days ago was World Habitat Day. Saint Francis would approve. Find a way this year to commit yourself to the health of our planet who is our sister and mother. Thursday, October 05, 2017 Memorial of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Priest Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; Luke 10:1-12 What s the secret to a joyful life? It is not about enjoying happy circumstances, or all privileged people would be smiling and the rest of us would be in therapy. Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, which was very apparent in the life of the cheerful ascetic Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos ( ). This Redemptorist priest was best known for his simplicity, sincerity, and good cheer in every situation. Once, upon escaping the fate of being named bishop of Pittsburgh, he threw a party! Before he died while serving victims of the yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans, Seelos declared: To become holy is our only purpose in life. Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary today to inhabit the spirit of joy. Friday, October 06, 2017 Memorial of Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, Virgin Baruch 1:15-22; Luke 10:13-16 Among the short list of most influential people in your life surely there is a teacher or two, most likely from your early years of education. Saint Marie Rose Durocher, who founded an order in Quebec with a strong teaching ministry, was herself deeply influenced by those who taught her along the way. Her first teacher, in fact, was her paternal grandfather, who home-schooled her until the age of 10. The wisdom of tradition is preserved when it is passed from one generation to the next. Honor those who inspired you by doing the same for those who are coming up after you. Saturday, October 07, 2017 Our Lady of the Rosary Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29; Luke 10:17-24 Rarely do we pass a statue of Mary that is not originally draped by the artist and eventually by her devotees with a rosary: around her neck, across her hands, or anywhere it s possible to dangle one. Some statues are so laden with rosaries by the fervent that it s a wonder Our Lady can stand up under the strain! This reality contrasts with the story that it was Mary who gave the Rosary to the early Carmelite Saint Simon Stock and by extension, to all of us. We re the ones who need a little help getting our prayer on, after all! As Rosary Month moves forward, have you found your beads yet? From our Pastor s Pen... In recent Gospels, it seems as if Jesus has been speaking in a way that some in the parables feel as if they are being treated unfairly. When these types of incidents occur, we need to take a moment and reflect on the situation that is being presented, and Who is presenting it! For, can God really be unfair? Of course, the answer is NO, so what is going on, if we have that perception? As we heard in Isaiah that God s ways are not our ways, and that His thoughts are not our thoughts, then if something seems to be contradictory to the very nature of God, then we need to pay close attention, because He is preparing to teach us how to truly be His disciples, and not only disciples, but, more importantly, His children. Therefore, let us listen with an open and humble heart to what the Lord wants to tell us, and then be willing to accept it with a profound joy. When we are able to do this, then we are on our way to growing in holiness.

If you are thinking about providing a Catholic education for your child now or in future, this is your chance to come and see the difference. There will be many opportunities to ask questions, take a tour, and meet students, teachers, and alumni. We look forward to seeing you there! On November 9th at 9:30, our students would like to invite all Veteran s to join us for our 2nd annual breakfast and a show. We want to be able to celebrate our parents, grandparents, parishioners, and community members who have made a sacrifice for our country. If interested, please rsvp to our school office at or lsalmon@saintandrewschool.org. God Bless You! Did you know that St. Andrew School has been growing a garden? Although the school year just began, we had a small group of kids who dedicated many hours over their summer vacation to caring for our school garden. We were fortunate to be the recipient of a $500 grant from the Waynesboro Tractor & Supply to help get our garden started. Students have been weeding and picking fresh produce all summer. Much of the produce has been donated to Human Services of Waynesboro. The overabundance of peppers and tomatoes have been made into fresh salsa. The middle schoolers will be selling this SASsy Salsa at our kidzone next weekend for $5 a jar. The money will be used to replenish the garden so we can continue to help local organizations who serve those in need. We are so proud of this group of kids!
